The thing to consider is this:

Just because they are at peace, and the war is declared "over", doesn't necessarily mean that the north will lessen their stranglehold on their people one bit.

It can't get any worst so there is only one way to go. Back in the early 80s I made a point that when the USSR allowed American business/products into their very closed off universe, changes will happen just because people want a better life. We saw McD open in Moscow and two years later USSR was no more. I do think the border will open up some and not be in perpetual war state as it is right now and give it 10 years and we will see changes.

I just think with the Winter Olympics and the even harsher sanctions that old Kim is tired of living a life in his crappy prison and wants to be free and the only way to do that is to end the war.

finally some good news from the Korean region!

this is fantastic , shout outs Korea for all their efforts to bring an end to this long lasting conflict

It is very good news. It must have taken alot of effort of both sides to agree on something like this. It's a long lasting conflict that hopefully is something of the past. A brighter future in the region can only be a good thing.

Oh, good... I'll let you be that guy!

While I certainly hope this is true, and that it leads to a permanent peace between the Korea's, I'll believe it, when I see it.

There are entrenched interests on both sides of the DMZ that stand to lose much, if not all, of their power/influence if this happens...

Not just in Korea, either. There will be push back.

One step at a time. Assuming that this isn't all moonbeams and fairie dust.

The only thing that will free North Korea is reunification, mho of course, with the south and the peaceful removal of the Kim Dynasty. A peaceful removal will mean that their "God-king" left willingly, and that it's OK. If it's done through more violent means, he's going to be a martyr to many of them--which, of course, presents a host of other problems.

I'll believe it when I see it, but it's a hopeful sign. How many of us ever thought we'd see the end of the Berlin wall?

So...you folks are qualified to speak for the Left? Or are you speaking for the Right? Did they say you could?
Like I said, looks a whole bunch like projection to me.

I'm an American so I'm more qualified than you my friend to understand my political spectrum. You constantly engage yourself in American politics and you constantly miss the mark so many times. You operate on the fringe left and that is such a small percentage of America though the media would have you think otherwise.

The funny part is that you have no awareness of your blinkers.
But please...'Murica-splain to me as if I don't have access to all of your information sources, and probably consult a wider range than you do.

That is a good answer. There are many means of ending tyranny that do not involve all out war. I wager a simple propaganda campaign would suffice. My only contention is that the end of the current "war" between North and South will allow pampered Westerners to continue going on as if the people in North Korea do not matter.

North and South Korea reportedly set to announce official end to war

North and South Korea are in talks to announce a permanent end to the officially declared military conflict between the two countries, daily newspaper Munhwa Ilbo reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed South Korean official.

Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the confrontation.

Kim and Moon could also discuss returning the heavily-fortified demilitarized zone separating them to its original state, the newspaper said.

Certainly a step in the right direction. Hopefully this happens and things settle down for a change on that peninsula.

If this works the left are going to lose their damn minds over it. I am sure the devil is going to be in the details but hopefully the details are something both sides will be able to reach a compromise on.

I don't get it -- why would the left, or the right for that matter, lose their marbles over this? How do the left or the right have anything to do with this action? Why even politicize it that way?

It is obvious that China is trying to unify its power over the eastern block in preparation for the impending globalization. Kim Jong just returned from a trip to China where influence over him was exerted or deals favorable to him were promised.

And this is great news for the people of NK and SK, I'm very happy for them, I hope it's real and that it lasts.

Very exciting to at a minimum see North Koreans enjoy some of the technological advances that are benefiting the rest of the world...or I hope it eventually heads in that direction...

NK has responded to DMZ propaganda trucks with artillery.

Psychological Warfare is an act of war.

In my Dystopian Films Ultimate List thread I posted a story I found about people sending banned movies across into NK to people, that was pretty cool. Regular folks can do that all night long. NK has a extensive list of banned movies (such as about every title in my dystopian films list which might possibly put their situation into perspective).

Flying over NK and dropping leaflets would have good effect. As for movies, you're exactly right. In the case of Park Yeon-mi, the defector now doing talks about liberty, it was specifically the movie Titanic that led her to question everything.

As for military intervention, if the world was to band together and put an end to this madness and tyranny, I wouldn't be opposed.

Well usually its US doing all the blowing snip up.

Do heed your own warnings: when everyone starts agreeing (on war no less) look out.

This has a lot more to do with the work of South Korean President Moon Jae-in than it does Trump.

Great news, if NK is serious about this. Maybe Kim is growing up, a little.

Also I'm sure although he had little to do with it, Trump will claim all the credit for any moves to end war between the two countries. Just wait and see. : )

I’m amazed that it’s the ‘lefty’ issue that’s caught on in this thread and not the endlessly fascinating question as to where that leaves the US military and it’s interests.

It's more important to many folks here, to embarrass, make fun of, and ridicule others of a different mindset, than the pesky little news that a major conflict that affects the U.S. (soldier-wise), and much of Asia.

I have no problem as a "lefty" with this. This is excellent news. Not losing any portion of my mind over this. Anything we can do to get some more peace in the world is fine by me.

See, here's the deal...your basic premise is skewed by the conviction that the Left would oppose anything that made Trump look good.

Here is the deal... You look at all this as a Canadian and not a liberal American that wants only a win in 2018 and 2020 no matter the cost. So, what this means is any and all of Trump successes are viewed as bad while investing all their time and energy on anything negative that can be pinned on him no matter how insignificant.

I really feel bad for you if you sincerely believe this garbage. The VAST majority of the "left" lives their lives just like you do and wants what's best for the country. They may have a different viewpoint on issues than you but good lord.. your comments are asinine and ignorant at best.

Because they dont like it when Trump is successful. In case you missed it the left was going nuts on Trump for his stance on N. Korea, claiming it would start a new war.

your insanity is affecting your judgement man.

3) Trump had absolutely nothing to do with this. it was both the koreas that decided to sit down and talk. but please take all the credit if you want, i know it helps you folks sleep at night.

Your statement is false.

I may not care for trump, BUT, he is precisely why Kim is shaking in his boots, and making this move. He is well aware he is next on the Trumps hit list. Wise move on his part. He knows that Trump is not a weak spined lilly livered coward like the feminine obama

Just curious, do you give credit to Obama for killing Bin Laden while he was president?
