America is an Empire.

which is the same thing as saying that it still exists while Hitler, Tojo, and the Old Soviet Union bit the dust. We remain. So yes, we became an empire in order to survive.

We are not Switzerland. And they wouldn't BE Switzerland without the United States being the USA. the Soviets would've absorbed them too, if the west hadn't stood firm. And the backbone of the west was..... the US empire.

While it may be deplorable that America is an Empire, just ask the folks in Poland whom they'd rather serve, American interests or Putin's.

Ask the South Koreans why they don't just merge with North Korea, and end all the hate.

The remorse at joining the death star doesn't slow down too many mexicans on their way north.

Not hating. Just stating.

EDIT TO ADD:

Memorial day is St. Crispian Day for Americans

I like how my vet husband sums up both Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

"The biannual ceremonial circle jerks for us military, and brown-nose events for civilians."

Needless to say, we do not celebrate.

Edit: Or commemorate.

And on and on this childish reasoning that since other empires were / are worse, just go with it. Even "if it takes" White Phosphorus to ensure my comfy bed at night in the Empire, that's okay I'll still sleep like a baby.

Not being able to say anything against the troops is quite possibly the most sickening example of our PC mindset in practice.

There is not a single person that should be 'criticizing' the military.

It only has one job.

Kill the states enemies.

Politicians are the ones that tell us who that is.

Want to criticize someone.

Begin and end with Congress and the presidents since the beginning.

I know, right?

Others are worse is not childish reasoning, it's the way things are. Otherwise known as reality. There is all the difference in the world between US and THEM. What territory has the US annexed in the last 30 years? Crimea? Chunks of the Ukraine? South Ossetia???

When the US shoots an enemy hospital, it makes the news. When Assad does it, no one bats an eye. YOU don't bat an eye. The only bodies that count is the enemy body count. Memorial day is the day we take stock of the American body count.

Killing someone with phosphorous rounds is bad. But only if you ignore a world full of evil, does it stand alone. The rest of that evil is perpetrated by "not-America." And stopping American violence will not end the non-American violence. Indeed, it will almost certainly allow it to increase exponentially.

I wonder how you live, that you don't have a job, that you don't attend a school, that you don't to ANYTHING that adulterates your perfect moral purity. Because your insistence on focusing on America's victims makes me think you don't know anything about the rest of the world's suffering.

How do you manage to remain a moral and philosophical purist?

For a living I grow the rarest sub/tropical edible / fruiting & medicinal perennial plants, which I make it my business to scour the globe for them and make them available to all. The sorts of plants that can 'save' the world. I live more green than most any self-declared environMENTAList you could ever find, although I find most of them tend to despise me even more than the Pro-Imperialism crowd (you should see some of my threads lol).

I AM the change I want to be in the world. Are you?

I guess it's because 'America' (the U.S.A.) consistently tries to take the moral high ground, even though its actions do not match its words and sells itself as a shining beacon of liberty and democracy that causes it to be the focus of attention...oh, and the fact that it is the current empire du jour.
It's not an attempt to detract from the suffering elsewhere, perpetrated by other than the U.S.A. It's showing the U.S.A. up as a stinking pile of lies and houses of cards.

fair enough. The folks that are convinced that the USA is the Great Satan won't lose a single argument, at least in their own eyes.

For those folks, America can never be good enough, even if it protected ten thousand villages, or dug a thousand wells for thirsty people in the desert, if it waged war on slavery world-wide, if it stood up to the global ambitions of the truly evil.

Since they have been raised in a hot-house environment, where their every assumption is based on the fact that America will still be there in the morning, for both good and ill, that they cannot really even imagine what real anarchy can look like.

For those folks, America can never be good enough, until it ceases to exist.

What would be even better than us taking everything upon ourselves trying to be God & fixing everything globally singlehandedly as a nation would be staying the hell out of everyone else's business. I don't know how many times it has to be said that we're the damned equivalent of the know-it-all mother-in-law from hell, on a much larger scale. Maybe we do have some good tidbits to share here & there, but more often than not, like a crappy MIL, it's best to STFU & keep our noses to ourselves. All the international dramaz we're told to be afraid of = our creation via suffocating amounts of meddling.

I'd like to see us do a lot less, too.

I do think that at this point, the US of A is an empire, like it or not. Suddenly refusing to actually operate the empire would precipitate a crisis that would neccesitate either a) ceasing to exist as an entity at all, or b). re-instituting a second empire to prop up the vacuum of the one we'd just ended.

If we were gone, REALLY gone from Iraq and Afghanistan, would do you think would happen? Or Who cares??? Probably wouldn't be the end of the gory photos, though.

I don't think it matters much, because I don't think America is going to be much of a player a decade from now. By the time you get around to having these sorts of discussions, the Empire in question has already lost enough support to continue anyway.

There are other ways of standing up to evil empires than fighting, and my personal principles are firm enough for me not to be swayed by the ire of a warmonger who, obviously, only knows one way to skin a cat.

Te Whiti o Rongomai

Te Whiti said, ‘Though some, in darkness of heart, seeing their land ravished, might wish to take arms and kill the aggressors, I say it must not be. Let not the Pakehas think to succeed by reason of their guns. . . . I want not war, but they do. The flashes of their guns have singed our eyelashes, and yet they say they do not want war. . . . The government come not hither to reason, but go to out-of-the-way places. They work secretly, but I speak in public so that all may hear’.

There are many other brave people who stood up to war and oppression non-violently. I celebrate these people.

For once I agree with you. Besides, people can't get together, have a drink, and some BBQ on their day off? This is so dumb.

The poster above you is awesome. Sure people can say dumb crap, but that's what America is all about. Everyone gets the freedom to voice their opinion. I'm happy to be here and I thank those who fought for what they believed in. All humans deserve freedom and peace. No matter how our battles have been twisted we stick with our principles despite having our intentions corrupted by morally deficient people.

Even if people want to have a BBQ so what? Having food with friends and family in an act of togetherness is a great way to pay respect to those who have fallen. Whatever one does on this day, even if it is napping, is perfectly fine. We were given a way to have our own choices and as long as you're not locked up in a prison cell then whatever you do today is you exercising your choice. If anything, no one should ever have to work today, but I know the grocery store is still open.

At its core we are honoring fallen soldiers wounded vets and all men and women who have and do serve in the armed forces. We owe them that for what they do. It is sickening how the Marxist leftists have ruined the morale of our armed forces with their utter hatred and contempt.
For all veterans and current military here on ATS I honor you!!!

How does it honor them to go on ignoring the falsehoods behind their pain?

I call that a total dishonor!

Death before dishonor!
