It will be ineteresting to see how this plays out.

I can't see Putin really wanting to vary from his primary objective of wanting to help regain control of the country for the Assad govt to then work out a post war plan.

But he will not be a happy camper about this either. He is not targeting Turkey, just Syria and yes, they share a land border which at several hundred miles per hour is very easy to accidentally overshoot.

So we have Russia saying we did nothing wrong (which if true why not respond to warnings), and Turkey saying they did (which includes the 5 mile buffer zone).

I lean towards Russia doing it, but open to their side, we will find out eventually. If they did, them being shot down is nothing wrong.

Turkey has long since claimed, and had recognized, a five mile buffer zone inside Syria. They have shot down Syrian aircraft within that airspace in the past.

The question is WHO recognizes that "Buffer zone" ?

Why would Turkey shoot it down ? They know the "world" is trying to defeat Isil, why shoot it down if it didn't threat Turkey ? And why arnt Turkey helping russia in the fight ? Ask yourself these questions.

Well they would claim that wouldn't they, just like they produced "evidence" that a Ukrainian fighter shot down that passenger plane when the whole damn world knew it was a Buk - and this was backed up by ALL physical evidence, witnesses, tech data.

I still don't have a horse in this particular race, either Russia or Turkey could be at fault here, but given the history of absolute bs Russia is known for I am not willing to blindly trust them.

Either way, this will not be WW3.
Russia will not want to retaliate against a NATO country (it will probably depend on what the Russian public mood is), and even if it did I doubt NATO would back up Turkey.

If (and it's a massive if) Russia strikes Turkey in response, it will be a single, limited strike on a strategic/symbolic target avoiding civilians. NATO will then be forced to hold one of their spectacularly wasteful meetings, and they will call Turkey to the table and likely give them discreet orders to keep out of this in the future.

All of our nations are distracted by a more important goal right now, none of them want to cause any kind of ruckus which could lead to something bigger than the fight against Da'esh.

Here's what will probably happen...

Russia will make a lot of noise, NATO will sit quietly watching what's happening. Turkey will concede something and make this out to be a misunderstanding. Turkey will hand back the Russian pilot/s in their care after top-notch shelter and food. Both parties will walk away with fake smiles.

If you violate airspace and do not respond to warnings you are a threat. End of story.

Turkey 'down Russian warplane on Syria border'

I believe Turkey should have shown some restraint, the planes would have been clearly of Russian design, and they know Russia is bombing ISIS at the moment.

I'm not saying this gives Russia the right to violate another countries airspace, but still....bad reaction on Turkey's part in my opinion.

Turkey has to protect its ally. Russian jet was probably stalking an ISIS convoy inbound from Turkey, hah.

BBC reporting that the plane was in Syrian airspace when shot down. From other sites I get that one of the pilot has been captured by Turkmen/rebels.

Oh do give it a rest!
Every time Obama or Putin guff someone starts talking about "NUCLEAR WAR!!!!!!1111"

It's NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

I do wish fantasists would stop fapping over nuclear Armageddon in public like this, it's embarrassing.

China has no capacity to get involved in a war so far, they dont even have an aircraft carrier.
