I shared it on Facebook. I don't have a flag and have been wanting to get one for our front porch and this thread has motivated me to do so.

It is a shame it's come to hanging them upside down but I do like this can of approach to a peaceful protest.... definitely strange times.

Do you have commercial advertising in your country?

All products have logo's , these are symbols representing the company that produced them and they are usually loaded with symbolism.

The moon is symbolized by a crest , the sun by a circle , I doubt that you are unaware of those symbols in your country, and of course the STAR , of which symbolism you seem to be acutely aware of.

With a congress that is less popular than herpes I think there's reason to believe that people are waking up.

Good luck nonetheless.

i did answer.
and to answer your qeustion of course i care about my country! but i dont care about my countrys flag. haha. it is just some colors and a shape. on a piece of cloth.

and trust me, going into town to burn the contrys flag would surely provoke response because burning anything without permission in a public area is illegal.
the fact that it is flag would have no bearing what so ever and you can trust me on that.

the flag has absolutely no meaning in that respect. but of course, doing something so extreme as to going into town square to burn cloth would obvioulsy provoke response!
since its illegal to burn stuff like that!

So you're saying burning your nation's flag in public would elicit no different response than burning bed linen. I'm not buying it. Why don't you tell us where you're from so we can get a second opinion from your country mates as to the meaningless symbol that is your flag.

I issue the same challenge as before, only instead of burning it, spit on it, step on it, kick mud on it, show me that your country cares nothing for its flag.

yes ofc we have commercial symbolism. what i meant was obviously not that, but country symbolism. we have minor non-deep and non-emotional symbolism, such as silly dances at midsummerseve.
but you must admit, you are the most patriotic country in the world, at least top 5.
for us, and many others, we dont really have a deep feeling for our country.

myself, im extremely happy about it, since nationalism is one of the worst things in the world!
i would love nothing more than a nationless and borderless world.

but thats my utopia, its obviously not yours, and hey, thats ok!

but dont keep calling me stupid and that im jealous for stars.. when i try hard to explain myself when i cant hardly speak your language.....

i think its mean and no reason for such accusations!

im simply trying to demonstrate that what im saying makes alot of sense and the world is bigger than america you know

The American flag packs more punch than a picket sign because it is a symbol. Those 50 stars depicted in the blue indicate the 50 United States, a symbol of PRIDE, and UNITY.

I'm sure you have been proud of something before in your life. A good grade in school, perhaps, maybe your first kiss, or even your first child? I'm trying to find something that denotes pride that you can relate to.

The American Flag, to Americans, is a source of pride, that indicates the unity that we share as a country. It's indicative of our values, that despite being different, we can feel the unity of all belonging to one country. Even though we all know flags are mass produced and no longer hand-made, they still are a symbol of respect that is instilled into us as citizens of this country. People who disagree with us, or protest against US policies often burn flags, and desecrate them, much to our collective ire.

Hanging a flag upside down by individual citizens indicates that THE PEOPLE of this nation aren't happy or content with our government's policies anymore. Our government has forgotten that it's citizens are the lifeforce of this once great country, and that we see the direction of our government to be a direct and dire threat to our freedoms that were originally granted to us by a document called the Constitution of the United States. We see that, and express the right to display the symbol of our unity in a manner that indicates our feelings.

A lot of people that understand these concepts have moved this topic to the front page.

Sorry for any negativity towards you from fellow members, we offer no ill intent, and we are often a Patriotic bunch in the US. Sometimes, we fail to realize that this IS a worldwide forum, and we'll readily apologize when we are wrong, but this thread, the OP, and the focus, is about the NEED to display our flag upside down.

yes but this is the internet and not america
or please correct me if im wrong, is this american site only?

nop it isnt so expect ppl from the internet (a.k.a no nationality, the way it was meant to be) to question these highly "american only" type threads, and ask questions about them...

ok?

why?

if you started a thread about an issue that was unique to your country, and was really only relevant to citizens of your country, why would you expect people from other countries to have a desire to participate?

so what you're saying is that people on the internet, who are all from a certain place, shouldn't have the right to have a discussion about something happening in their country?

i do not need to prove anything to you? why should i take time to go out and buy a flag, then make a ridicule of myself in my hometown?

you see, where im from, i would look like a complete lunatic if i were to do that, wether or not it was a piece of bed linen or a flag.

trust me, the flag has no meaning for us like it has for you.

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, this is how peaceful revolutions start.

I would assume everyone who flies a flag on their lawn would be a proud and patriotic American, Imagine if every proud and patriotic American knew how pissed off every other proud and patriotic American felt.
It could be the worlds biggest display of disgust with a government ever!!!!!

It would be a clear and overwhelming show of how many people are unhappy with the whole mess and that maybe its time for a fresh start, if everywhere you went all you saw was upside down flags TPTB can either try and hide away with what they have or truly reveal itself by starting to arrest or shoot you all.

Your post made me think, about how some say flying the flag upside down is disrespectful.

You know, there are a LOT of people, young and old, who disrespect thing country in MANY ways....some people are just disrespectful in GENERAL, to their family, friends, country, whatever.

I don't, however, think these people CARE whether the flag hangs up, down, sideways, or is being burnt, etc. THEY aren't the ones even touching flags....they are too busy worrying about themselves.

The people who actually take the time to hang the flag upside down, strike me as the people who care enough about this country, and are GENUINELY worried.....not people trying to offend anyone, disrespect anyone, hurt anyone, or cause a ruckus.

Thanks for the concise explanation! that others claim had already been done multiple times. yet you are the first to explain it a way that non-american can understand.

so thank you for being polite and explaining, instead of being rude and calling me names.
Thanks buddy

Actually I haven't done any of the above things, perhaps you could have a point about nationalism and religious fever or political ideologies , they can be used to divide a nation.

Also I'm not American and I wasn't born there , nor do I live there , I support the Ideals of this display of symbolism.

im sorry but where have i stated that you dont have a right to discuss something in your country?
i said dont assume EVEYRONE is from USA, and people from other places on the world might ask questions, just like i did, and it would be nice if you refrain from accusing them , Like MamaJ did, of being stupider than whatever she said.
Just because im from another place in the world and cant understand your symbolism.

that is not the same as me being stupid.

secondly dont accuse me for having poor english.. obviously i know it already... i might have other problems aswell that shouldnt translate into what im saying.. or validity of what im saying...

and i understand it, i always understood it
but you americans seem to assume EVERYONE thinks this strongly about their nations flag

thats my problem im having with it.
just because you ppls think like this dont mean other ppl outside us do.
and there is nothing wrong with that.

have some humility pls and dont accuse ppl for being stupid etc etc, just for questioning this matter, for it is not the same in other countries.

it's not your questioning of the matter...

it's one thing to say "i don't understand this, please explain it to me"

it's a completely other thing to say "this is silly, it's just a piece of cloth, you people are broken"

one is a request for information, in an attempt to gain insight, or understanding. the other is just insulting.

again, painting us all as "you americans" is an absolutist statement, backed by a generalization.....this is never a smart thing to do, as you will eventually be proven to be wrong, because generalizations are never absolute...it's like saying "all nazis hated jews", or "all black people are lazy", or "all english people are mindless zombies who hate guns"...all of those statements are absolutist generalizations, and not a one of them is correct...
