And that would be quite disturbing. However, I am almost totally convinced that this is a not so classic foreshock sequence.

I think there will be an 7.8-8.6, with big waves in the very near future

I will be overjoyed if I am mistaken!!

I know this quake is no big surprise given the large amount of 6 mags over the last week.

But I did have a strong feeling this was coming......I hope the people in the area are properly warned and took action. Those waves come in very fast.

May God have mercy on those folks in the immediate vicinity

It was very quiet the last day down there, when I discovered, that the activity started a few hours ago, I said to my dad, that there will be a M8+ one down there. Between 50-100km away from Lata within the next 24h. He laughed, but somehow it was not that suprisingly. So when he wakes up tomorrow, I will tell him. I wonder how he will react

TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE

It was very quiet the last day down there, when I discovered, that the activity started a few hours ago, I said to my dad, that there will be a M8+ one down there. Between 50-100km away from Lata within the next 24h. He laughed, but somehow it was not that suprisingly. So when he wakes up tomorrow, I will tell him. I wonder how he will react

:He'll probably be a bit shaken...

That wasn't nothing. Just think, there's large waves passing through the ground below your feet. Depending where you are. You can't feel them. But just imagine them.

The GEE is showing every station with big squiggles. Given the larger quakes on the western side of the Austrailia plate, it seems like a big head on crash.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0112Z 06 FEB 2013
COORDINATES - 10.9 SOUTH 165.1 EAST
DEPTH - 33 KM
LOCATION - SANTA CRUZ ISLANDS
MAGNITUDE - 8.0

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)

ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Um I think it was Putermans friend who predicted a mag 8 in the Solomon Islands 13th Feb?????????

Just heard it on the car radio on the way home from work, tsunami "watch" for us here, which is just a precaution, if Fiji is to get 0.1-0.2 metres then by the time it gets here it will be nothing.

@mamaj, geez you're a box of joy, a mag 8.0 isn't big enough?

And that would be quite disturbing. However, I am almost totally convinced that this is a not so classic foreshock sequence.
I think there will be an 7.8-8.6, with big waves in the very near future

I will be overjoyed if I am mistaken!!

Just some aftershocks, I think.
Constantly going.

Btw. I wonder if this will have any effect on the plate break up zone..
