Math Philosophy-- Why does 1/∞ not equal 0, and for that matter, what is ∞?

(0/1)*(1/0)=((0*1)/(0*1))=0/0=1

(a/c)*(b/d)=(ab)/(cd)

a=d
b=c

(a/b)*(b/a)=ab/ab=a/a=b/b=1

0 * ∞ = 1

1/∞=0

You are dividing by zero again.

You are either to arrogant to admit you are wrong, or too ignorant to see that you are wrong.

I am ignorant. I am so because at this point, I cannot see where I am wrong and do not choose not to see. You are arrogant, because you can see where you are wrong but choose not to.

Besides, I tried to tell you. I tried to speak of indeterminates. You chose not to accept that as an answer. So now, I am using simple math to attempt to illustrate this to you.

Sorry.

Keep telling yourself that.

Give yourself a gold star, call yourself an "Adept", have you delusions of grandeur that you are the next briliant mind.

Let me know how that works out for you.

geesh! this thread was on page 5 last night. I have a lot of catching up!

thank you ALL for a very inspiring thread.

because of the interest about infinity here, I decided to write up a thread about my own explorations into the subject. much of what I read here last night was very helpful for me in my analysis of the chaotic attractor I have been working on.

not to pull you away from this thread, but I wonder if you might give me your thoughts?

thanks!

Well, at least I know that I will never be as brilliant as the guy who solved 1/∞=dragon.

OFF TOPIC:
Maybe you will join your buddy Obama in receiving a Nobel peace prize--all that really good talk deserves something

I will tomorrow. Dumb people like me get exhausted at the thought of breathing haha. But I did click on the link thingy and like the shiny pictures so far

No, to be serious, I will check it out--I am interested.

Guy's...Guy's....Infinity is not a variable...nor is it a concept....it is a state. Sort of like a template where all other things can be calculated...and in reality...a Multiversal System...would dictate that in some of the Infite Divergent Universal states out there....our Math would be meaningless. Split Infinity

You still don't get that it makes just as much sense as you saying 1/infinity = 0.

And you have yet to prove it wrong....so it must be a possibility

you're not dumb at all.

our conscious experience is at -or- beyond the threshold of the infinite.

being that we spend so much of our time there, I would think people would be less hostile (more familiar) to the subject.

some people are not comfortable unless someone ELSE is telling them how to think.

No, it really doesn't. ∞ is a concept heavily involving numbers and numerical value. Place whatever definition on it you want but it still involves numbers. Dragon, however, aside from perhaps how many cells it is made up of or how many knight it takes to kill one--does not even remotely involve numbers, regardless of what definition you place on it.

So really, evaluate what you said about that making the same amount of sense as 1/∞.

I mean, pathetic... just pathetic.

Sorry x2 (or what is that, .5869dragon/wallet? I don't know you are the only one who gets it, you teach us. See how far useless debate gets the world? No? Ok, keep replying.)

I think what it comes down to is that people are afraid of what they do not already know. You walk into college and they tell you how smart you are for getting in (well I think anyway, I am not in college just yet but from what I know...). If they said everyone there was dumb, who would really stay?

People don't like infinity so they refute it and its application.

This entire thread is useless debate.

If you don't want to prove 1/infinity = dragons is false, then prove that 1/infinity = small is false.

While you are at it, give me the answer to 1/big = ?

You are the perfect example of someone who has opened their mind so much, that it has fallen out.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt early in the thread, maybe you really wanted to learn something...but now I realize you are just a confused little boy that isn't as smart as he thinks he is.

All I've got to say regarding this thread so far is in response to this:

Look out, your immaturity is showing.

And you are still not making sense.

He's not even out of high-school yet and has been taking advanced college math courses way ahead of his piers for quite some time now. He presents a valid and deep-rooted philisophical question involving theory in said mathematics that_you_can't_disprove/answer and all you've got are petty insults? Are people on ATS no longer allowed to raise questions that require out of the box thinking? Who's the immature one here? You've been prancing around this entire thread like some kind of "king of mathematics", yet you really can't dispute anything.

All I know is from previous threads, you seem to have some semblence of intelligence, yet it seems your number one priority in life is to try and troll threads with very subtle and petty strategies which in turn delude whatever intelligence you have entirely.

If I've learned anything from this thread, it's that infinity exists in this thread! Circular arguments over and over instead of constructive conversation related to the OP.

Yes, it shows. He can't admit when he is wrong, he thinks he knows better than everyone else, and he attempts insults when he has nothing else left.

I am simply pointing it out.

and has been taking advanced college math courses way ahead of his piers for quite some time now.

Completing a course doesn't mean you understand it. He obviously has a lot to learn...very basic concepts to learn.

He presents a valid and deep-rooted philisophical question involving said mathematics that_you_can't_disprove and all you got is petty insults? He has been proven wrong over and over...he just won't admit it. Like I said...he is either too arrogant to admit he is wrong or too ignorant to see it.

He has made multiple incorrect and illogical statements like "once you reach infinity"...yet he sees nothing wrong with them.

People are trying to show him his errors...he is just a poor student.

All I know is from previous threads, you seem to have some semblence of intelligence, yet it seems your number one priority in life is to try and troll threads with very subtle and petty strategies which in turn delude whatever intelligence you have entirely.

I see mis-information...I call it out.

Your son is trying to baffle with BS...if people don't call out his errors...the more naive on ATS will just believe the garbage he is trying to pass off as "deep thinking".

This thinking isn't new...1/infinity = 0 is all over message boards on the internet...with the same results. People trying to show how it is incorrect thinking to use a concept as a number...and those that won't listen.

1/large = ?

1/small = ?

1/huge = ?

1/finite = ?
