I was born in 1971 and as I grew up I saw the transformation from a many slim population to a rather overweight population and more recently the
appearance of many morbidly obese people.
In my school there were less than 10 overweight children (in the whole school), now obese children are everywhere (more often than not, belonging to
obese parents).
For me the big change happened around 1980. It was around that time that McDonalds came to the UK, artificial sweeteners became common and many diet
products appeared. I saw my mother slowly gain weight during this period, she spent a fortune on diet products.
I have seen many websites explaining how aspartame actually causes weight gain.
Crisps (potato chips) used to have mainly natural ingredients in the UK. Now it's really difficult to find them without chemicals like monosodium
glutamate and the size the packets are now huge.
Ready meals also started to become more popular, they often contain more sugar, oil etc. than a freshly cooked meal to improve the taste which
obviously increases the amount of calories consumed.
The fearmongering by the BBC propaganda outfit and others made people feel less safe than in the 70s when it was uneccessary to lock one's door in
many places. Some parents didn't feel comfortable letting their children play outside so it became common for them to stay indoors playing their atari
video games instead of riding their bikes.
British TV is better than most other countries, many popular shows are exported all over the globe. It has become most people's favourite pastime to
watch it after work or at weekends. Until 1982, there were only 3 channels which operated from around 8-9am until 11:30 - 12pm. Most people would go
to bed and sleep regular hours due to these limitations.
From the early 80s the TV channels added transmission hours, satellite and cable TV channels appeared until eventually hundreds of TV channels became
available 24 hours per day. So people would stay awake later and eat snacks or have a fourth meal (supper).
Now it is possible to be completely inactive, working from home is possible, many jobs are done by working in front of computers, it is easy to order
fast food without going out to buy it, Video games have replaced real sport for some chldren.
Binge drinking cheap beer, and eating a late night kebab have also added to the problem. (This is a typical night out for most young Brits)
Based on my observation, I think that it is a combination of some or all these things that have contributed to the UK obesity problem.
