I think its up to individuals how they see the day of celebration...and I have to agree as kid..it was a fun holiday...and even as a parent, and grownup ..it can still be fun .

But to deny, and not be cautious that there is an element of the occult behind it, as well as leanings towards the goolish ,ugly..and creepy scary..would be pretending that side of it didn't exist.

I understand where the op is coming from when he says ..that it does seem strange what we tell our kids, and then what we allow them to do....all in the spirit of celebrating something, that we may not understand the origin of in the first place.

If its fun for you..I say go out and celebrate.. for those of you who hate it..I understand..and there is no obligation to celebrate or acknowledge it.

Each to their own.. and I'm sure the op has enjoyed Halloween, just merely asking some questions surrounding maybe telling your children why we celebrate it, and why its ok to go asking for candy from strangers...especially on a night filled the influence of creepy ..ghoulish spiritual things.

That makes total sense for me to have questions like that...and I really don't think hes trying to be a party pooper.

and so what if he doesn't like it.. that's his choice.. doesn't stop any of you from having your fun.. so be it.

When I was a child in the late 70's early 80's we did the bobbing for apples bucket often, some of our neighbors did as well and it was a good time for everyone. Funny thing is even back then you would hear talk of razors in apples and poison candy. It never happened, not that I heard of, I'm sure it does somewhere and not only on October 31st. Some people are crazy and will do awful things any chance they get but I'm sorry, I'm not actually, but putting it on Halloween is an agenda that too many people fall for. Halloween is important to some people but it's ok to s### on their religion. Talk crap on mainstream religion and it's a different story, I could mention priests molesting boys as long as I can remember but I won't, oops.

The US is ruled by FEAR. You really think there are more weirdos out there than 20-50 years ago? I seriously doubt it. What we have now is the media inflating on a national scale isolated cases that would only make it to local papers. There are hour long documentaries on single cases and a plethora of movies fueling the daily scare. This is overt terrorism on all americans young and old. Pedos have existed always as have serial killers and human trafficking. Hell, I would venture to say the internet has given a venue for many would-be pedos and killers to let off steam at home browsing gore and kiddie porn without resorting to the real deal in their own communities. Not saying that theyre not despicable, but that the buffer is plausible.

Hypocrisy and fear rule this nation and all by design. Look at how the antimuslim propaganda spread like wildfire. Iraq war based on a lie and still some refuse to see this and demand justice. Look at the ows protestors being murderously attacked by police yet the nation shakes at the thought of holding the authority figures accountable. We are the ones we've been waiting for. It is time to break the cycle. Enough is enough.

The reason candy is so important in america is because all hollidays are comercilized in the us. Its like a lil boost for the pocet books of big corps. My birthdays on holloween and I just turned 21 and I took my lil bro and cousins all tricker treating and it was an awsome bonding experience and had a great time. Its just ashame tho that it has to be going around getting material things from people. Its kinda f'd up to that in hollidays like christmas and easter and holloween they almost use kids as leverage to get people to buy ther re products. Hopefully one day the worl will be lest materialistic.

So apparently 7billion dollars will be spent this year on the holiday. Over 41million will go trick or treating(13 % of the population) the same number roughly as are on food stamps by the way. One question I have always had was why it became tradition to beg complete strangers for candy, and have it ENCOUARGED by your parents. When I was young I remember coming home only to be subjected to a "safety check" (really just a chance for my parents to TAX me of all the chocolate) I have a 7 year old daughter and can not imagine her going trick or treating without parental supervision, like we used to do as a child. Point is the world is just so much crazier than it was 10-20 years ago, but even with that MORE kids are going out as the years go by? Anyhow, just wanted to know if any ATS'ers have any explanation for the phenomenon

We now return you to you usual doom and gloom, and OWS threads-

It's one of the World's oldest continuously running holidays / traditions. Started by the Celts with evidence as far back as 4,000 years ago the tradition was during Samhain (Celtic new years day, November 1st) the worlds of the living and the dead blended together. On October 31st people would gather around giant bon fires in scary costumes to eat and drink together, telling stories and the like, until the sun came up on November 1st. One tradition was that children, dressed as monsters and demons, would wonder around the camps and ask for stories and treats. It was adopted into the Catholic traditions of All Saints Day, which was originally on May 13th to November 2nd.. in Celtic parts of the World it was combined into Samhain as one holiday, and the tradition larger stuck (the Church tried to ban the practice of the Bonfire, and driving cattle between the fires as pagan superstition..)

Irish and Scottish immigrants to North America brought the traditions to the US .. communities used to have big parties where people showed up in costume, ate, drank, shared stories, ate treats.. often games for kids and pranks were played out, and there was a community form of trick or treating. Eventually there would be city wide parades in the early 20th century, and sanctioned times for trick or treating.

So in other words.. because it's an ancient tradition.. and we shouldn't be afraid of our communities. The World is no crazier today than it was in the past, we are simply more aware. But we shouldn't teach our children to fear our community, no good can come from that.. and taking Halloween from children is an abomination, for kids it's just about fun and candy. Some people read to much into it.

Well said! I couldn't have said that any better myself!

I think that's why you should only pig out on candy once a year.......I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.....It's one day...Most all of those things (with the possible exception of hyperactivity in some kids) are caused by years of gorging oneself on sugary snacks. Just like one night of drinking a year is not going to cause liver disease...If you want to argue that people should cut down on sugars throughout the year...then fine. You probably have some valid arguements there......but Halloween is a one night thing.....Kids don't trick or treat year round. It's called moderation....anything taken to the extreme can be bad for you, but one night a year of indulgiance is not gonna hurt the average kid.....lighten up a bit! Have a candy bar once a month or so.....You'll enjoy life better!

Good to know I'm not the only one who fits right in one day a year.

Ontopic, I haven't seen any unchaperoned kids for years trick or treating. The parents like getting dressed and going around just as much as the tribe of children they are escorting.

Wanted to add to this that one of your points in the the OP was about contaminated candy. I'm sure we all have heard a story of a needle/razorblade/some other sharp object in candy.

Here in my city for a while there were some sick and twisted individuals that decided it would be funny(?) to put glass, needles and razorblades under the gravel or wood chips at various city parks.

So, should we also stop taking our kids to the park? There was also a man that bought a bunch of grapes from the grocery store and there was a black widow spider in it that had survived the import process...should we stop buying grapes?

The point is we aren't going to (or shouldn't) stop doing these things because of the tiny percentage chance of an accident happening. We need to be aware and on our toes and inspect the halloween candy, the park, the grapes (insert whatever story you want here). If we stopped doing everything that could possibly have a bad outcome we'd all be holed up in our homes paranoid and insane

What are you a born again christian
, I had a huge amount of kids come to my house last night for Halloween
and there was not a single 7 year old that did not have parental supervision. also i knew 90 percent of the kids that came through my neighborhood the other 10 percent were friends of the 90 percent.

Nope....Your wrong!

Sweets and candy are eaten all year round and not just halloween

This is my point.....Candy is socially acceptable...most parents are as thick as pig shyte and feed candy to their children everyday

This so called tradition has been hijacked by big business and is now an excuse to pig out on said candy.......which in turn will make billions in revenue and make our children dumber and sicker than they already are!

And just to add, I don't like Candy and never have.........I don't use sugar in my tea or coffee......and rarely eat deserts.....there is more than enough sugar's in our daily fruits and proccesed foods than our body needs so why stuff large amounts of it into our bodies in the form of solid candy??

I tink it would be fun to dress up as a little kid for halloween, but as an adult... So you'd buy a mask that's a 6 year old and put on some oversized 6 year old clothing. Then show up at houses asking for candy. I think some of them would be creeped out. But then you'd let them know it was just a joke. Don't forget to say "TRICK or TREAT."

I love halloween. It's not self-important. The other ones got their balls in a loop.

I really have to laugh at people who're afraid of halloween because of religious reasons. I think it would be far creepier to dress up as an old man any other day of the year on a lonely road.

This fear complex people have is a byproduct of our evolutionary roots. It's hurting us. You don't combat evil by hiding in your homes. Evil just is. People aren't thinking clearly about it. By hiding in your homes and living in fear, you're breeding evil in your own mind. You're your own monster. A kid who hides under his covers doesn't make the monsters go away. It's all inside his mind.

Does that mean there're no monsters? Of course not. But don't be paranoid. Much of this freakshow we call life is hte result of our fear. Hiter, for example. It would do all of us good to actually know the man. It would destroy every fear complex we have. At the end of it, we would probably pity his pathetic self. But instead, we hide and his presence becomes monstrous. It's amazing how much power Hitler still has on people. He may be dead, but only his body is.

What I'm saying is that we make evil stronger than it should be.

Halloween is just plain fun--something we're all in desperate need of. It's also the last hurrah before the silly season...I despise Christmas. All that stress and running around, and for what, exactly? So everyone can take their stuff back the next day?

The people who hate Halloween because they think it's evil really need to learn about the origins of Christmas. Not that it's evil, either, but if it's the pagan roots of Halloween that they object to, they're in for a rude awakening.
