And I hope you're relieved that no one ended up killing themselves or others because of all the false doom and gloom that was being spread over this comet. Did you know that even children were writing in to NASA saying they were thinking of committing suicide because they heard that Elenin was going to kill us all? You can have your beliefs, but realize that they can have consequences and you have to take responsibility for those consequences. I don't see this thread as celebrating Elenin believers being wrong. I see it as celebrating the fact that as far as we know no one got hurt as a result of the Elenin believers' negligence.

Not so.. Nasa vapourized one in 2008, hit at the correct altitude and the smaller fragments don't survive.

Have you actually followed any of these doomsday prophecies before? Every single one has people that are contemplating ending/ruining their lives. The obvious example is Heaven's Gate. But even the recent Harold Camping prediction had its own fair share of tragedy surrounding it. For example there was a man that drowned trying to swim across a river trying to reach the place where Jesus was going to arrive. There was also the woman who cut the throats of her children as well as her own with a box cutter. These tragic events were caused by an event that the mainstream and conspiracy theorists alike ridiculed. This Elenin crap had the potential to be much worse than that and I'm sure 2012 will have its fair share of deaths related to it.

Please provide a link to the vaporization. Destruction of satellites has resulted in unwanted space debris that threatens satellites, the ISS, new launches, etc. There is great risk in creating more space junk.

I believe you are referring to the satellite with the hydrazine. The danger lay in the hydrazine hitting the ground.

No I have never in my life followed a doomsday prophecy, because there were no events that led me to look into it. The events of the last 10 years have made me question things more.. People will often use religion as an excuse to do bad things, those things you list are just that, desperate acts by disturbed people. The general purpose of this site is to discuss things outside mainstream media, to bounce ideas, find out info. There is no harm in talking ! There are some important events going on in the world, we shouldn't not discuss things because some nutter might take a toaster in the bath.

The goal was not to shatter the satellite as I already pointed out. The goal was to ensure the release of the hydrazine before reentry. There was no evidence that the reentry was in any way less dangerous once the hydrazine was released. In fact, the extent of the damage was unknown. It was surmised that the hydrazine tank was ruptured. That operation was expensive and would not have been performed had the satellite not failed shortly after lift off leaving the hydrazine tank nearly full.

No vaporization and no evidence that the falling material was in any way less dangerous.

Theories are not put forward as facts.

If that were applied as "true", then ATS wouldn't exist. The bubbleheads that keep this place afloat with their insanity would be licking windows someplace else.

You might be right on that, if they got the timing wrong could have a domino effect and create more space junk.. Just disappointing they didn't think of these things when they put them up there..

Apparently most of the dangerous space junk seems to have come from a Chinese test of a satellite attack system and a collision between 2 satellites. If I recall the collision involved an Iridium satellite.

It's September 29 and NOTHING happened.

ATS would be a lot better if fearmongering swine were banned the day after their predictions and gloom 'n doom projections fall flat.

I don't know...I kind of enjoy saying "No, Just no" over and over again. All of the face palms and what not.

The only thing that gets me a little heated is when these people make a mockery of Astronomy, planetary science, etc... I'm an enthusiast and I do not much enjoy people making ridiculous claims and then trying to back it up with rubbish.

Well they have sort of learned not to propose one set date, but rather a slew of them. The next *big* date is apparently October 28th. And then sometime in November (7th or 8th), I can't really remember off the top of my head.

To play the devils advocate, I don't believe the world is worse off for these people being removed from the gene pool. I can't wait to read the 2012 Darwin Awards. It should prove to be hilarious.

I'd just like to say a big thanks to the family of Bruce Willis. Especially to his daughter Liv Tyler. Her fathers sacrifice to stay and destroy ELENIN will never be forgotten by us folks here on earth. I only hope she can find some happiness in the arms of Ben Affleck. I watched the documentary of the mission to save us and Bruce's team were amazingly brave.
