so how accurate are these simulations through the software then? Is the satelitte following its normal path?

edit on 22-9-2011 by dreamseeker because: (no reason given)

i haven't been using the same simulation they are using. but i would say those simulations are accurate. and regardless of what NASA says, they know exactly when and where it's gonna fall. and if the DoD didn't shoot it down yet, i'd say it's harmless.

West Coast here. Whew, got out of that one. Just a moment.... justa moment.
I think I am hearing sonic booms, swooshing noises and distant thuds.
Sirens are wailing now, dogs are barking and children are crying.
There is an acrid smell in the air. Smells like... toasted satellite.

hi, I someone probably already got this ( I am still on page one and had to look up uars ) , but I love how NAsa considered this a

small risk to the public.

when

...Of the 26 pieces expected to survive reentry and strike the surface, the estimated mass of the largest piece is 158.3 kgb (349 lb) , possibly reaching the surface at a velocity of 44 metres per second (140 ft/s) (98 miles/hour) [/color ] . Smaller pieces are expected to strike the surface at up to 107 metres per second (350 ft/s)(240 miles/hour].[19]

if a bb hit you at 1/3 the speed of sound it wound certainly not be a small risk , and a baseball at that speed would be fatal, just imagine some molten nut or bolt at 240miles an hour, but seriously 350lbs at 100 miles and hour that's a fat man on a scooter (scootie puff junior) hitting you at 100miles and hour ...owww, so I suppose NASA thinks that small risk means either :

"in the ocean" ( pacific )

or

hits another country , like France , so small small risk to everyone not France

anybody knows if the fragments already hit earth???

I live in Panama so chances some of the pieces landing here are very remote.

My guess la zona silencioza ( the silent zone) in north Mexico

The best guess is Its gonna land somewhere in the US. Because its our toy. Because we drop dangerous stuff on other countries. Because we deserve a little tiny bit of that fear that foreign countries get when they hear our military jets overhead.

I'm not sure if this is of any help, but I am using Stellarium in conjuction with Orbitron. If you punch in your coordinates where you live, and have a general idea which way your window | back yard | balcony | etc., is then you will be able to see if UARS is passing above you!

Just a thought!

I noticed that too. Up to 121.2 as I type this.
How can that be? I thought the darn thing had been loosing altitude slowly since 2005 or so. Why would it be gaining now? Besides, if it's dead as a doornail, how can it gain altitude anyway?

Up to 122.56 in the time it took me to type the statements above!

I guess chuck did hit it back.

watch the altitude on those sims, anything below 140km and it should burn like a firecracker and stop orbiting thanks to atmospheric drag. someone said it may have bounced earlyer, looks about right since its current orbit peaked at 192km altitude not too long ago.

ed: to be clear, bounced, off the atmosphere.

It's 4.00am here in the UK and I've got my piece of cardboard out with
'Welcome Back!' daubed on it... no sign of the satelite yet.

If it drops in my place, then I'll have to explain why there's a steaming
UARS in my garden again... damn neighbours!

IF there is a GOD, and I know there is, then this fast moving surely at least mildly harmful piece of atmosphere splitting space debris will hit...............

I would like to track the UARS but this website seems to be packed: www.n2yo.com...

Any other good websites for tracking this thing? I'm hoping it flies over my house, maybe something will fall off so I can sell it Ebay

But I get the feeling this big boy is gonna land in a highly-populated area, such as Denver or NY. If it does I hope people take hundreds of pictures and videos. Don't let "The Man" cover this up, DENY IGNORANCE!!!

I track satellites using the app called SatelliteAR on my droid.

It has a an option to track UARS.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but I thought I would.
