Please do tell......What does Science tell you as to why we are here? The Big Bang? Even so....you do know that is about to be a thing of the past, right? Many theories are dying out and new ones are emerging. This is the way it has always been.

My opinion:

There is no Science/Geometry/Life without a creator. This is where it gets really fun when you can allow yourself to combine what we know in regards to science and geometry to what we know about our creator. The three intertwine lovely.

You can take a Dr.'s word for an illness or you can seek out the symptoms yourself and determine the ailment and fix. Doctors are like scientists....constantly practicing to come up with an answer to a question.

Do not put all your faith into something you do not understand.......or should you? I say yes....within reason and I am also speaking about the creator as well.

We do not understand diseases and the cosmos as we would like so we theorize and practice.....people look up to these professions and believe everything they are told. WHY? Same reason they believe every word in the Bible or other texts...... they just do. Everyone believes in something and have their own why's of doing so even when they do not understand it completely.

I say.....don't be a follower with any subject. Search out Truth and it will reveal itself to you. The creator is Truth to the Spirit.

One of these days I will get the courage to tell my story to others. But for now, there is one thing that I know for sure:

How can this song make a grown man cry?

S & F!!

Very well said

I am a non-believer now and I can truly relate to everything that you have stated.

As a believer, I used to think that 'god' was talking to me, sending me messages, and answering my questions. But I can honestly say that even then, I was always suspicious that perhaps it was ME who was coming up with all the solutions.

Like you said, it just feel good to think that a superior being was guiding me.

But I was the one who was coming up with the responses.

When I hear someone saying that 'god' had answered their prayers and was guiding them through a rough situation, I immediately want to ask, "Why would your 'god' place you into the situation in the 1st place? If he is going to resolve the problem, why create the problem?"

They usually respond that it was a 'test'.

But an omnipotent being doesn't need to 'test' lesser beings.

They respond that it lets him know that you need him.

Sounds like an enormous ego trip, if you ask me.

Thanks for writing this OP!!!

Well you are absolutely right, I don't know what works. I believe God may speak to people in different ways, this is why I said "maybe". Do I have a relationship with the creator of the universe? Absolutely. I am living aren't I? We all have relationships with people, objects, places.....they don't necessarily have to be "close" or "good", but they exist, to some degree.

It is up to me and only me to decide how close of a relationship with God I will have. Most of the time, pride has gotten in the way and my pursuit of earthly pleasures.

Hmmm....'pride'

Do you mean "loving and trusting in yourself?'

Yep, religion does teach AGAINST that......

Deleted my response.

It was a little too personal.

Once the new millennium had started, God decided to put humanity through a series of tests.

Everything happens for a reason.

Theres a difference between communicating with God and ones own thoughts. The thoughts are different. There is no "I should do this or that". Usually it strikes you as where did that come from that thought.

Example...I had a new water heater put in. The dang thing kept going out. I called them they came out and said they fixed it. Yet as soon as they left with another check in hand the dang thing went out again. So I called them back they couldn't come out to the next day. I live alone with my young son so when I am talking I'm talking to God just like I would my own Dad if he was there. I kept asking what the heck is wrong and now they are saying it's this the part is covered but not the labor. All at once the word propane kept coming into my mind. Why I asked myself is that word keeping coming into my mind. I didn't know there was a difference between propane water heaters and natural gas water heaters. I went to my old friend google and found out those stupid plumbers could of blown me up to heaven. So I called the plumbers main office and said "hey you put the wrong type gas water heater in my home and could of blown me up" Needless to say I got a new water heater and my money back from that day. If the words propane wouldn't of kept coming into my mind I would of probably been dead before anyone noticed they installed the wrong water heater.

When people tell me God has told them something is going to happen or they need to do this I have to take a good look at that person. Everyone wants to be an end times prophet it seems like. Check their ego. I've heard many people say God has revealed to me that this means that and it's okay if I do that. That's when I figure they've twisted the words of God in their own mind so it makes them feel good about what they do.

The thoughts or 'answers' are created in your mind.

People chose to credit a 'god' with supplying the thoughts because it seems to justify their actions and makes them feel secure and satisfied with whatever the result is.

Prayer is communion with YOURSELF.

However, religion teaches that communing with yourself is a bad thing, calling it 'pride'.

I believe God talks to me, but not with a big booming voice, or a burning bush, or even a whisper. I get feelings, or signs nudging me in the direction I feel I am led to go. I am a firm believer in letting everyone have their own faith, or lack there of without my intervention. After all, there is a chance I am completely wrong in my belief and I won't go to heaven, or there is no heaven. But I'd like to think that's not the case. I am happy believing that God listens to me and helps me with things I truly need help with. I don't bother him with stuff I can handle on my own. I think he appreciates that too. I plan on having a cold beer with him one day when I meet him in person.

In my own "christian walk" of 20 years or so, I believed that I had a personal relationship with the creator of the universe. As a non-believer now, I can see that I was wrong. I can see that in my strong belief, that when I prayed I truly felt that there was a god up there listening to me who cared for me and loved me. Just thinking about that is enough to bring about special emotions. Just believing that there is somebody out there watching over you and guiding you is powerful. Yet, was it all in my head, a type of self delusion?

I have personal relationships with friends and family. I have direct communication with them. I can see their physical representation of themselves, and I can hear them audibly. At no time in my conversations with them do I ever get my voice confused with their voice. It is quite clear who is speaking and when.

In my experience, this is not the case when dealing with a relationship with a supernatural being. I have seen people who were christians of many years say that god told them something, such as an event that would occur on a specific date, only for that day to pass and nothing happened. Did this god trick them, or did the thought come from their own mind? If it came from their own mind, how do they not know the difference between their thoughts and the difference between the voice of the creator of the universe? It should be quite clear, shouldn't it? Knowing that this happens, and I've seen it happen many, many times, how can you trust anyone who says that a god told them something?

Is it really a personal relationship if you really don't have true back and forth communication with someone?

My friend, I have a very personal relationship with the father who art in heaven. How do I distinguish his voice from my own? I listen to you.

Just as I am within the father and the father within me, so to is he within you. The way I prove God exists to others, I answer their prayers out of love for them.

Are you your Brothers keeper?

With Love,

Your Brother

I am going to say this and I mean absolutely no disrespect...

Most of the time (during debate), Christians (believers) often do exactly what you just did: talk in bronze age parrables.

Why?

This is 2011.

You do this because you are merely repeating (from memory) these type of speach as heard from a minister/preacher. And you are quoting biblical scriptures, which were translated for into that type of language to be understood by the people of that era.

So this indicates not a 'knoweldge', but a repetition of biblical text.

Of course i have a relationship with the creator of the universe....as i am he

To experience this reality we have to be conscience. My brain transforms photons of light into objects....the universe. I create my own reality and my own universe.

If i were dead the universe would cease to exist...its that simple really

So I guess when you quote the works of another writer to back up your points your not doing the same
Have you ever wrote a paper that required references? Have you ever given someone a book to read that you thought would help them? If so, then you what your saying is not knowledge from yourself, but the knowledge of others. How is anyone suppose to learn anything unless someone else tells them first?

Science is the only religion that makes any sense and can answer questions like "why we are here" .

I agree

People, especially the religious, have this thing where they feel they are 'special' and that a god 'loves' and guides them.

There is no one 'up there' watching you, caring for you, granting wishes for you, or communicating directly with you.

It is YOU. Yes, YOU.

Churches preach that there is something wrong with loving yourself, guiding yourself, and thinking for yourself (hmmm...sounds like brainwashing 101??)

We are ALL apart of the universe and are all composed of the same elements (just in different forms)

Well said!!

What I am saying is that they go into a 'Thou art is the way to the father...." and such mode.

Usually, they cannot debate with modern terminology because they really are not that knowledgeable on the subject to begin with. Seriously.

So they begin quoting from memorization.

Man, I have read through the responses that I missed while sleeping. There are so many different beliefs, and many of you have a relationship with what you think is the creator of the universe. How's a non-believer like myself supposed to know what's real and what isn't? Can you all be right? I don't think it is possible, it wouldn't make any sense.

Speaking of coincidences, one time while at work I was eating some peanut M and Ms. A thought popped into my head that the next one I bite will not have a peanut in it. I took a bite and voila, no peanut. Was that a god speaking to me or just coincidence? Mind you, it wasn't an audible voice, just a thought. Why would a god speak to me about m and ms and not something more serious? I say, coincidence.

Thankyou endtime I was just about to say that. I believe the reason why god would not speak to us internally is obvious cause it's confusing. I feel I have a personal relationship with god now which was'nt always true. There were times in my life where I believed as you did but I asked that god would give me a sign and he did. I am not telling you to do the same though. I am just telling you what happened to me, Where in my younger times i had believed but lost faith when my dad died. Then I almost immediatly became self destructive stealing, drugs, fighting, Sex etc until i almost went to prison. That started me on the path to faith which took a long time 5 or 6 years but just as I started to have faith. I also got into realism, the truth movement and caught a video on how God and religion is all a ploy to keep people in line! It rattled my faith almost to non belief and i was hurtiong really bad, and in this time of disbelief is when i asked and i said" god if you are real please give me a sign.
I feel i can't tell you what it was but i will say he showed me his face that night and ever since i havent seen it but i believe that's cause i don't need to! Though I still believe that the church only cares about power and false doctrines to keep us in line, I feel God as well as Satan are both real and represent both good and evil in the world.

I find that debate with religious people (especially Christians) is rather difficult:

They tend to deal in 'beliefs' rather than scientific / historical facts.

When the facts do not match their belief system, they will ignore the facts.

And that is ignorance.

I really don't want to base my beliefs on faith and feelings. I want to know. I want to believe in the truth, no matter if it is crappy truth or happy truth. I just want truth.

As a side note, thanks to everyone for keeping this thread fairly civil.

I once tried to have a personal relationship with God, but I ended up becoming BFFs with a unicorn and leprecaun...oh well, close enough I guess

on a serious note....I am an atheist, so the question is posed in a sort of silly manner. No, I don't claim to have any such connection (if there is a creator of the universe, then it is there by default anyhow..like, even if I didn't know my parents, that doesn't mean I don't have any).
However
I do talk to "the universe" and direct it out ..that way...I call it a running narration of my life, and sometimes it takes form as a simple conversation with all/nothing/whatever vocally, sometimes it is just a feeling during light meditation, etc...I don't reject I personally get something out of it when I do this, however, I don't like to label things...after all, it is more than likely just my "godpart" of my brain being stimulated during these moments as proven.

So..personal relationship with a creator? I have no knowledge of that...but do I talk to the cosmos and like to think things matter? sure.

If you want a physical senses relationship with the christian creator, you can always just order god and jesus from japan

I LISTEN to God in exactly, the same way you describe. Praying isn't just speaking to God. It involves listening.
Cool post.

I like your down to earth approach to your relationship with God. I like to think it makes him smile when people are casual and welcoming. At least in their attitudes, concerning the present condition our condition is in.
