Besides, I'd be reasonably happy if I could download just the documents which do not relate to any specific location/sighting - i.e. the general memoranda and analytical/statistical reports (i.e. the documents in the directories with location = "blank"). I'd guess this would be a couple of thousand pages out of the 129,000 and BORDERS on being manageable by clicking on download on each of the relevant pages (or at least it would on the good days when things are working reasonably quickly on Footnote.com).

Even that relatively limited downloading (which should not be very burdensome upon Footnote.com's servers) would certainly would be a lot less painful to do if there was some way to download even a relatively small batch of documents rather than having to do each one individually.

Hi Isaac,

I had tried a similar venture awhile back with Canada's database of UFO files, I wanted to archive them all in case one day they took them offline. After right clicking and saving each .jpg individually a few dozen times it soon became too daunting to continue.

I've looked at the Footnotes site and other than clicking the Download button I can't find a way to get the files. First I looked for the URL for where the .jpg is stored. Footnote hides the url to the directory where the .jpg's are stored, it opens it's own Flash dialog box when saving the image to your hard drive rather than showing the browsers download progress window. So using a website/directory downloading program isn't going to be much help here if we can't even get an address to a proper directory (assuming the UFO documents are in their own folder(s) and not mixed in with other documents). I did try testing it on the directory where the thumbnails are stored but it didn't work, I believe that directory is protected. I've tried looking at the pages source code but couldn't find a useful URL in there either. Also tried looking at the .swf file but didn't have any luck with that either. I think your best bet is to just email Footnotes and ask them about it.

Still have a link to that archive? It may be possible to create a program to repeat the actions

Leave all the search fields blank and go down to the bottom where it says "Browse by Record Group" and pick one of the four categories and hit submit. That'll give you a big list of documents, click on the record number on the right, then click on View Image.

One thing I was never sure about was how many documents there are in total. When you click on View Image it'll take you to page with the document and above it will say something like
Page Navigation (456 pages): >>
So there's 456 pages in that record group, but there's multiple record groups for each of the four category's (Department of National Defense, Department of Transport, National Research Council, Royal Canadian Mounted Police).

Mmm. No, but I'm not sure how that would work in this context. The Footnote.com website is absolutely HUGE and the relevant UFO document (although they number nearly 130,000 pages) is a small fraction of that website.

If there is some software or tool that would allow us to download part of a site, that would be great - but then we'd have to find a way to limit the downloading to the RELEVANT part of the website (and I don't think it is as simple as specifying one path/URL/sub-directory - but I'd love to be wrong about that...).

It may have already been mentioned but a personal web server such as "WAMP" will be needed to access the entire download - WAMP will handle the server files for you.

Just google Wamp server and grab the latest version.

Please go ahead and post any results (positive or negative) here.

So far:

(1) One member - Zorgon - has tried to locate a relevant directory but has not succeeded and has expressed doubts about the ability to download the images.

(2) A few people have suggested using one of the tools available for downloading entire websites but no-one has explained how one of those tools could actually be used when the relevant images are only part of a website and we haven't yet identified any path/URL/directory to limit the downloading.

(3) A couple of people have made the pragmatic suggestion that we contact Footnote.com, but I doubt this little issue would be of any significance to the company behind that website. Since the UFO collection is a relatively small part of their huge website and they don't seem to focus much on that collection, so why should they bother spending any time and effort to help the UFO community?


Other than that, I don't think there is much to report in the discussion of the challenge so far.

In other words, the challenge has not been met (yet...).
