Just to be sure, I opened up live monitoring in GEE of a seismo right near there. Nope. I'd be showing huge S-waves on that seismo- there is nothing.

TOTAL BS.

There was no earthquake anywhere NEAR an 8.4 there, and I question whether there was any earthquake at all, period.

Thanks for informing of a BS site. Alerting mods....

You made your point, please get off your high horse and chill out a bit.

I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those "people taking turns yelling at each other," threads.

Shame

tinfoil hats on

what if its actually a nuke blast and since its part of the offensive on lybia, all geological stations got a heads up to censor the event....

but this romanian one forgot to read their memos?

all the previous info on that site seems legit, so let's see if this gets pulled.

Thanks for that. Also noticed this on the site:

This public version of the map has a 24 hour delay in event reporting and is screened for security reasons.

Guess that won't help much but good site to watch.

A nuke blast would not register an 8.4 on any seismo. They more typically register in the 2, 3 and MAYBE 4 range. So that theory is out.

But fine, w/e, believe what you all want to...I'm out.

Yeah, checked those as well as quakes.globalincidentmap.com...

This is strange indeed.

OP info showed 14:49 UTC as time of occurrence.

Most recent earthquakes from USGS site:

5.0 at New Calendonia. Time 12:25
4.9 South of Fuji Time 15:37

If there was a 8.4 should already shown up at USGS

Just a tip. When looking for tsunamis off the Coast of Libya. its probably a good idea NOT to bother looking at the ptwc (PACIFIC Tsunami warning centre)

I don't think the Mediterranean has a comparable service!

RSOE has an earthquake in Libya showing now, it is a 2.9 that just showed up.

shell probably hit a sensor and it relayed the info as a eq?

One last point. The largest underground thermonuclear tests conducted by the US were detonated in Amchitka at the western end of the Aleutian Islands and the largest of these was the 5 megaton codename Cannikin test which occurred on November 6, 1971. Cannikin had a body wave magnitude of 6.9 and it did not trigger any earthquakes in the seismically active Aleutian Islands. Suggested reading: "Nuclear Explosions and Earthquake, the Parted Veil", by Bruce A. Bolt, W. H. Freeman and Co., San Francisco, 1976. (UC Berkeley)

earthquake.usgs.gov...

your horse is too high, we can't hear you.

but nukes do reach high mags on seismographs.

It shows the epicenter in the middle of the desert. So I think a Tsunami is out of the question.

Puzzling... anyway here is a link to the Mediterranean Quake monitor. It measures seismic events as low as 1 mag.

www.emsc-csem.org...

At least we're finding new quake monitoring sites.

you mean like every thread on here lately??

If nowhere else is reporting it then maybe it was an explosion that was picked up near by and wasn't detected as boom rather than a bang???

Dunno, but doesn't look like there was actually a quake due to there only being the one source.

Finding new sites is a good thing. Finding reliable ones is another.

Checked Google and this site has been reporting for awhile.

Very puzzling.

Yeah, what else can you do but relay what is there?

It's there, everyone sees it and I am asking for people to prove or disprove what is there.

Can it be any more clearer than that?

I'm guessing a bomb went off very close to a seismograph inside of Libya, which caused a false reading. The place is a warzone.
