would you not want to do the same to someone if they did it to you?

An eye for an eye. Or in this case, two eyes.

Sure it sounds horrible, but I believe in justice such as this. Same applies to any such horrid crimes. If someone goes around murdering people, I have no quarrel with them being sentenced to death.

Yep.Punishment fits the crime. Although the fact that it's condoned by officials is of course troubling.

Maybe this is why the prisons are full in western society, there is absolutely no deterrent to breaking the law.

Or maybe it is because we have like 6 million victimless crimes on the books. I bet in a year most of us break at least 20 laws that we don't even know about, and get away with it.

A large chunk in prison, don't deserve to be there, they hurt no one but themselves.

Prison is a for profit business now, it is meant to make owners money, not rehabilitate. That is why things are like they are. Judges and lawyers get kickbacks!

I do understand where you're coming from, but I see it everyday, not just a lack of respect for the law but a lack of respect for everything that is not "me" I guess that was more my point.

I mean JUST laws not the I'm rich let me change the law for my bank account ones but thats a different kettle of fish and a bigger can of worms.

I'd rather have full prisons than this kind of barbarism.

Like much of the Muslim World, Iran is still in the middle ages.

How is it possible for cultures like this to mix peacefully with cultures like ours in the West?? It's utterly impossible. And it's causing all the problems in the world today.

In your opinion, like i said before I think its more no deterrent, no respect and no empathy but we've all got our own opinions.

Doesn't your last sentence contain a big Oxymoron, you know the peaceful western like ours bit ?

It's funny to see people living in civilized western countries agree that "an eye for an eye" is a good type of sentence... If you accept it, you're not a better person than the one that dripped acid into your eyes.... You might feel that pain is the only thing you want to give him in the beginning.. but i'm sure that in the end, rotting in a prison for the rest of your life and taking away your freedom is also very effective, if not more, then to only "remove" his vision.

Exactly. I cannot imagine an Iranian prison being a fun place to live out one's days.

Some people have spoken about "love, and forgiveness". I can't help but think that those people don't know what it's like to be victimized by some of the scum that resides in and out of American prisons. I think there should be zero tolerance for some crimes, like rape, murder and especially child molestation. Those people do not deserve love and forgiveness, only death.

good. that will go a long way towards eliminating crime and violence. if you catch a criminal, and if they are truly guilty of the crime and you kill them, that eliminates that ONE criminal. the very fact that you have state-sanctioned revenge-based punishment encourages more violence and murder. I know it's a hard concept to understand, so I'll put it bluntly;

ANY violence + ANY violence = MORE violence than we started with.

no matter what. you cannot argue that by punishing the violent violently, net violence has decreased. at the very best, you've added just as much violence to the world as the criminal did to begin with. at the very worst, you've inspired even more violence in the future. even criminals have friends and family, and just telling them that they're loved one deserved to die or be blinded with acid usually isn't enough to assuage the anger and resentment felt by those close to the "criminal."

but it's all good. in the name of justice. crime and punishment and all that. just keep going to work and paying your taxes and never mind the fact that the violence still exists, with or without your violent response to it.

Yes, because our lax justice system works so well. You think it's okay to not truly punish the man that sodomizes and slaughters little boys and girls? It is HUMAN to seek real justice for crimes. We are a violent species, and because of such, we deserve to be handled as such. You won't see a dangerous pit bull stuck in a cage for the rest of it's life, no- it's euthanized. Extreme criminals do nothing to further our species, they should be euthanized as well. And no, I have absolutely no problem saying that. I am not saying that this particular crime needs to be rectified with torture. But he does deserve all that he gets.

People who are advocating eye for an eye justice are just as bad as the criminal in this instance. The problem here is a lack of respect for human life. Clearly the criminal in this case is wrong, but society as a whole will never get beyond these senseless crimes if this type of justice is endorsed. In fact, I think you would see more of it.

Yes, Humans are violent. But that is not a excuse to have barbaric punishments.
I'm a fan of life-time imprisonment and to sentence people to death(those that have committed mass murder etc) but it's just sick to have sharia laws. If you're a fan of it, i suggest that you move to any of the MENA countries. I'm sure that you might get free tickets to public executions.

Fair dues, I guess I have to be more artistic to use artistic license.
I do see what you were implying though, and sharia law isn't for western society no matter what the muslim population wants. But in this case the man mutilates and ruins a womans life just because he got rejected, so in this instance I really do feel the punishment fits the crime.

I know we aren't going to agree on it though, but opinions are just that opinions, to you yours is more valid and to me mine is.
