And getting rid of the nastiest members of a group WORKS. The only problem is that we dont use the top down method, and we make too many exceptions. We arent rehabilitating anyone in jails. We are making jailers rich. They get beat up in there, raped in there, brutalized by guards, each other, locked in solitary for years sometimes, and it costs us tons of money to keep them in there.

At some point we need to make good sound decisions based on facts, not fantasies, about human (and animal) nature.

www.nytimes.com...

In a study appearing today in the journal PloS Biology (online at www.plosbiology.org), researchers describe the drastic temperamental and tonal shift that occurred in a troop of 62 baboons when its most belligerent members vanished from the scene. The victims were all dominant adult males that had been strong and snarly enough to fight with a neighboring baboon troop over the spoils at a tourist lodge garbage dump, and were exposed there to meat tainted with bovine tuberculosis, which soon killed them. Left behind in the troop, designated the Forest Troop, were the 50 percent of males that had been too subordinate to try dump brawling, as well as all the females and their young. With that change in demographics came a cultural swing toward pacifism, a relaxing of the usually parlous baboon hierarchy, and a willingness to use affection and mutual grooming rather than threats, swipes and bites to foster a patriotic spirit.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and no where do I see that more clearly than in our approach to crime and criminals.

Agreed. There is something about the "self awareness" of humankind that is the seat of the good intentions that are the road to hell. We are aware of the certainty of death at some point, and for some of us it colors our view about the death of someone else. But those who wish to house these dangerous types pay no attention to what actually happens in a jail. The jails are full of nonviolent offenders (drugs, etc), who come out much worse than they went in because of the irretrievably dangerous types. I say get rid of the incorrigibles - there is no redemption for them. They don't care about the public at large, they don't care about thier fellow inmates, they just don't care, period and I would rather take them out of the equation than to risk becoming a victim.

I personally think it is a fair punishment. That's a horrible and sick thing to do to that poor woman. If he was put in prison, he would be be released after a few years and be free to enjoy the rest of his life. That woman can never see ever again, which i think is one of the worst things that could happen to someone and something i dread happening to me.

a very moving and touching movie recreated a real life situation where this same thing happened in America.
It is called "Crazy Love". The story is very inspiring for the heart. It's sad, of course, but shows that there are alternatives that could never have been imagined.

In the movie, the man does not stop trying to court her even after he attacks her with acid in her face. He goes to jail and gets out years later and she eventually goes along with him, only to later fall in love with him. She became dependent upon him, and that is what he desired, and they both lived (not so) happily ever after, but yet it was probably better than this situation here.

I saw that movie...it was bizarre.
What he wanted was CONTROL, love didn't have anything to do with it.
If someone truly loves you, they are not going to throw acid in your face to begin with.
She fell in love (if you can call it that) because she felt she had no choices. When that happened the societal standing of Women was much different than it is now. I believe she would not have chosen him in the end if she felt at the time that she had other choices.

Im sorry, maybe it would have been more on topic to tell him what the OP said rather than just suggest he actually read it.

The guy is being punished with the acid in his eyes because he threw acid into a womans face who rejected him.

You need to really open your eyes, and see REALITY as it is.

MIGHT EQUALS RIGHT - Plain and simple. Make sure your might is strong.

In this example the girl has no case for retribution as she was not strong enough to stop it from happening in the first place. Might equals right, as you say.

ONLY A PEDOPHILE CAN FORGIVE AND FORGET ANOTHER PEDOPHILE UNDER THE BANNER OF HUMANITY.

ONLY REVENGE LIKE THIS ACTS AS A DETERRENT.

THAT'S WHY IN THE UK, WE HAVE PEDOPHILES RUNNING ABOUT EVERYWHERE.

Might equals right until one encounters someone mightier than them..
Might equals right often finds themselves at the business end of a firing squad.

well man the only real justice in this world is by the hand of god by whatever name you wish to call him.

the biggest problem in the entire world is man tries to play god.

and while the west is by no means perfect they have sorted alot out and stop acting like idiots i cant say the same for east.

Why do religious nuts have to always mention god.
Is it impossible to not think with your sky daddy looking over you?

I too, have faith but it is tempered with the reality that there are those on this planet that would kill, rape and maim everyone they encountered if given half a chance.
I believe that my Deity imbued me (as well as everyone else) with the tools to make decisions based on the reality of the situation.

Except vast majority of crimes in the United States are non-violent drug offenses.....so how do you use an 'eye for an eye' judgement against some stoner who sold a drug deemed illegal by the US? Force him to sell a drug the US deems Legal?

'eye for an eye' justice might be a good idea for violent offenders...but I don't see it making much of a dent in the enormous prison population the U.S. has.

Because their belief helps to form their opinion. There is not one person on earth who doesn't work this way.

If their belief is that an all-powerful being created the earth and made the rules for it then it would stand to reason that that being would be the driving force of their opinion of said world and its inhabitants. It's analogous to you implying that religious people can't think for themselves.

That would be a great solution!

But I don't believe it is possible at this time. Even if it was, there are many other things to consider...compatibility of blood type, ect.
Corneas can be replaced but I believe the damage to her eyes was much more substantial than just the corneas.

Everytime I debate with a christian or a muslim all they do is quote their holybook... even when it pertains to evolution.

Now that's what I call independent thinking!!
