Thank you Chad for clearing this up for the newbies and fools!
No offending to anyone but many of you seem to be very afraid from the shows and docus you have seen on the net...
Surely there is much more going on than in the last years but as chadwickus said..." it will be a bumpy ride..."

with all our new electric up there...

It's not the sun that's doing strange things. Its that you've started noticing what it does daily. A reminder of the grace that keeps you alive every second of your life.

It would explain the random hot days during our winter in Canada!

Weird weather over here.

CW if it wasn't you posting this I would have passed it right by, but now you have my attention.

What's going on?

For a minute there I thought you were going to suggest the Sun is responsible for heating up the planet, and that's just crazy talk. Everybody knows the earth heats up because of mans carbon.

I think this is something important to add. Does anyone remember NASA talking about the giant hole in our magnetosphere. Apparently this "hole" was caused by the passing out a solar flare. Now the most interesting thing to note, is that for a very long time the scientists had though that a southern passing of the flare is what allowed the most particles in. (when the IMF hits the magnetosphere and cancels the magnetosphere out due to its southern passage. This can be viewed on many websites, look for the Bz By data or meter.)

But according to this article @ AccessScience

When the magnetic field lines traveling from the sun point in the same direction as those they encounter on Earth, they were thought to reinforce each other as they curve around the planet, creating a shield that shelters the atmosphere from the Sun's damaging plasma. In contrast, when the fields are in opposition—when the Sun's field points south—a more unstable magnetosphere forms and small amounts of charged particles leak in. At least that's what scientists believed.

Data from THEMIS, however, has now shown the reverse to be true. The breach formed when both the Sun's and the Earth's magnetic fields aligned and twenty times the normal number of solar particles poured into the planet's upper atmosphere.

Keep your eyes on that aligned/direct hits as much (if not more) than the southern facing ones.

Thank you for this thread, Chadwickus. Not a pessimist, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it to take. :sigh:
I'm so tired of waiting for the solar maximum to begin and every time I see one of these threads, I can't help feeling really disappointed.

Since we've had a record breaking X flare in the recent past and obviously, civilization didn't come crashing down around our ears, I'm hoping for some big ones soon. Opportunities to see aurora are very rare where I live- next to impossible. I'll take every one I can get.

Sorry for the edit: Space Weather
Always a good site to visit on a daily basis. For me, I like the orbit diagram but also love the pictures and information made available.

Just found this on another thread, not sure how often it get's updated.

ISWA:NASA
Live Solar Storm Feed

According to this Mar's was hit by a 60AU' Where when Earth get's hit we haven't broken 20 in quite sometime.

We have got a very nice source of information: spaceweather.com
does anyone bother to make statistics or just to check what is happening on sun every April or other months and compare it to present times?
It is always looks quite the same, but what is my point - there is no coleration with earthquakes or strange weather - COMPARE WITH PAST PEOPLE

According to whattsupwiththat Solar Reference Page the sun is showing the following activity:-

Current solar status = Normal

Geomagnetic conditions = Quiet

Good thread, and good list on the above post ^

I'm asking more lessons for newbies

As the spaceweather.com also gives details about the solar wind on the main page, I was wondering, what speed and what density would you call somewhat out of normal, or a sign of acting up or something. ..And while at it, if anyone knows and bothers to explain those other things on the left panel too, current auroral oval, planetary k-index, interplanetary mag.field, coronal holes...

So what I'm interested at are what are the values that are at normal range or a range during less active period, during a low range or inactive period(?), and what are values that are hinting high activity or something of that sort in each of those data categories if possible. "..if planetary k-index goes xxx then you could pay a bit more attention.." kind of thing. I'm not sure if they keep top lists of these other data areas on their site aswell, but if they do, I would like to see those links too. ..like this top flares list posted few posts up www.spaceweather.com...

I tried to google about the solar wind, and checked this thread so far about the solar wind and the word wind popped up few times. On page 2 in this thread for example "Holes in the sun's atmosphere spew million mile-per-hour gusts of solar wind. " ...that's quite a wind compared to the current speed: 447.2 km/sec (if that even would show these gusts)

I bet some of this stuff is covered already on ats, but ..

lets make a DoomSoup together...

First we add..

The Sun is the dimmest it has been for nearly a century. There are no sunspots, very few solar flares - and our nearest star is the quietest it has been for a very long time. The observations are baffling astronomers, who are due to study new pictures of the Sun, taken from space, at the UK National Astronomy Meeting.

hmmm..we add...

“The sun is awakening from a deep slumber … At the same time our technological society has developed a vulnerability to storms is unprecedented,” warned Richard Fisher, head of the Heliophysics Division at NASA

add to the mix...

NASA's five Themis Spacecraft have discovered a giant breach in the Earth's Magnetic Field, 10 times larger than anything previously thought to exist.

and why not this too...

December 23, 2009: The solar system is passing through an interstellar cloud that physics says should not exist. In the Dec. 24th issue of Nature, a team of scientists reveal how NASA's Voyager spacecraft have solved the mystery.

and we know what the result will be...

On March 13, 1989 a severe geomagnetic storm caused the collapse of the Hydro-Québec power grid in a matter of seconds

and then they tell you...

Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months

epic..

always IMHO...we have to keep an eye on what is happening to our Sun...but maybe thats just me

Just trying to be clear here, but from from what I have seen in science media, the sun's activity does seem to have some correlation to our climate on a large scale if I recall. I don't remember the details but the severity of winters, etc, or other decade long weather patterns, ie "mini ice age" events seem to follow a larger pattern of solar activity. Perhaps it was only theory that was discussed.
