I just knew the lazy word would eventually come up in this thread!

We have the potential for becoming more lazy, OR more productive. Those who choose to be lazy will be phased out, naturally in the long term, it seems.

What about a couple generations before your time when we had to build our houses our selves, or walk all the way outside to take dump?! Are we now lazy because these are obsolete, or do we have more time to invest in other activities, and some are choosing not to be active at all?

People choose to be lazy not because of progressions, but in spite of it. So many options to be busy these days! If they want to be lazy, let them be. They're not part of our future. Too much to be done!

Have you not seen idiotocracy?

Lazy stupid people have more inclination to procreate, either by choice or accident.

Busy intelligent people, are always looking for the right time!!

Yes! totally agree!

when I was in the library last week my kid acted as if she was embarassed to be there "can't believe we are in an ancient library mom!!!"

and when we fell without electricity for an hour last month and she couldn't use her computer she said " so this is how they lived in the middle ages? I can't take it another hour!!!"

and when she uses her cell phone to call upstairs to ask me to bring the botle of coke downstairs she doesn't get it why I get upset...

or when she and her friends uses the webcam to organize a 'sortoff' sleepover party through the computer....

when they copy a bookreport from the internet or watch the movie instead of actually reading the book

when they get their homework asignments though email (what are those teachers thinking???)

when they use the voicerecorder or cam on the cellphone to remind you on every word you ever said...

when the paper tv guide became to hard to read and the digital version on the tv is much easier to programe

when 'wireless' means you can now carry it with you EVERYWHERE you go.... and the laptop becomes a vital bodypart

so sad.... yes, kids are learned how to be lazy

What's hilarious is that you misspelled the title. It's idiocracy.

I'm well aware of the genotypic dysgenics that has been going on for some time now.

What you speak of is how things currently are. Well, time changes all. It seems VERY obvious that breaking points within societies will be reached, and only the most fit of us will make it out alive. The lazy are NOT the most fit.

You're being short-sighted is all...erm...I meant, STFU, lol.

on the contrary, it is further proof that the generations get lazier as we evolve.
...

I don't think it's a sign of us getting lazier. I think it's a sign of us getting more efficient. When you make comparison to physical tasks there are some that make us 'more lazy'. However when it comes to information age we need efficiency as much as possible.
I have a feeling if we ever make contact with an alien species they will go *snap crackle pop* like dolphins and say more information than a human language would say in one minute.

In all seriousness abbreviations and jargon can convey a huge amounts of information accurately and quickly.

I built my first PC a 386DX CPU with OB MCP on the 40MHz MOBO & 8mb V-RAM PCI VGA Matrox Mystique GPU displayed on my 14" CRT & 3.5 Gig HD. My next one was a P-III 933 MHz Socket 370 CPU with 133 MHz FSB also PC-512Mb SDRAM and 128MB ATI GPU on the MOBOs AGP [Considered an NVIDIA GF] also VGA displayed on SONY 21" FD Trinitron CRT with .24 DP

Okay, let's be clear here. There are 'words' when it comes to playing scrabble, and there are 'words' when it comes to the definition of:

a unit of language, consisting of one or more spoken sounds or their written representation, that functions as a principal carrier of meaning.

Source

Ultimately, an acronym is a type of word - just as a contraction like y'all is. And for the record, I read neither EE TEE SEA nor etcetera. I simply see the letters and comprehend what they mean. If I were to read the sentence aloud I would read 'etcetera'.

I find it very interesting that you find snafu allowable though.

EDIT: Again, how is 'reading' snafu as a new word different from 'reading' lol as a new word? I don't think anyone's come up a with a practical way of reading OMG other than OH EM GEE as yet. lol is consonant vowel consonant - it lends itself to being read.

Exactly, I still don't understand the advantage of texting over speaking to someone directly. Not only do they distant themselves from verbally communicating, the emotion of communication is no longer personally connected. Sure, you can sense it in the text, but you don't recognize it in their voice or facial expressions. That can certainly create false reads. That's why kids commit suicide from internet bullying. They don't have to feel uncomfortable about saying something bad to someone's face. Even here on ATS, you wonder if some posters would ridicule people as easily if they were face to face.

tell that to the lazy punk kids who made, and continue to make, millions off their tech innovations, websites and apps. I was talking to a friend of mine, who is involved with an angel financing fund, about an application I'm involved with the topic turned towards facebook (the app runs via some kind of link to facebook) and the guy was talking about how, with facebook, he can keep in touch with a couple hundred people that he wants to keep in touch with but simply doesn't have the time. now, thanks to facebook, he can catch up with everyone in 20 minutes or less.

twitter - a means of telling everyone you know without talking to everyone individually.

file sharing/piracy - replaces that horrific task of making tapes/discs for your friends.

because it's spoken as a word - snah foo.

if it was es ay en ef you (don't go there people), it wouldn't be a word.

You're too busy being lazy!!

One mans laziness is another mans activities. Ultimately, the term is subjective and our perception of it is shaped around our hierarchical value structure.

And what production are you increasing by painstakingly typing out every word when you could easily just abbreviate?

I always thought "time is money" on the production side of things, no?

You're making a big deal out of nothing, imo.

Wasn't there a study suggesting that human language, words and speak is very inefficient means of communication and that is likely what will hold human race back alot. If anyone remembers links I think it's on topic.

Lazy punk kids technologically innovate?!

Am I the only one who sees the glaring contradiction here

You perceive them as being lazy, but in fact they are very active. They just don't seem to be so based on your way of processing information.

I guarantee you're a J. You just can't appreciate the strong Ps way of being active, it seems.

I believe it. Octopi (as in octopus -- the monster sea creature with lots of legs) can apparently transmit entire memories to each other the way they communicate. This was discovered when, after a few curious octopi were cut up in ship and submarine rotors back in the first half of the 1900s, sailors noticed that other octopi from other nearby areas already seemed to know what they were and avoided them automatically, as if they'd been informed in the mean time. There's been lots of research on the intelligence and physical versatility of the octopus and it's astounding.
