OMG! FYI, the OED is like all TMI. Can we still be BFF? LOL.

The venerable Oxford English Dictionary has entered the age of Internet memes.

..."For the March 2011 release of OED Online," ..."we have selected for publication a number of noteworthy initialisms—abbreviations consisting of the initial letters of a name or expression. Some of these—such as OMG [OMG int. (and n.) and adj.]: ‘Oh my God’ (or sometimes ‘gosh’, ‘goodness’, etc.) and LOL [LOL int. and n./2]: ‘laughing out loud’—are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications..

ATS rules do not allow the use of initialized words in the Breaking News Forum - and discourage their use in other fora.

What will happen now?

The Oxford English Dictionary is indeed venerable. If a word makes into the Oxford dictionary, one can be assured that it is a part of the English language, absolutely and officially.

But OMG! The repercussions! ATS will need a dictionary icon. I suggest the upper right hand corner.

BFF,

sofi

omfg.

Wtf!

jk!

Edit to add: Just trying to prove a point of WHY this is happening.

In a fraction of the time it would've taken me to write those three sentences, i used 10 letters to say the same thing. Internet Shorthand as I like to call it is still in it's infancy. This may be the sign of the end of dinosaur communication methods and a bridge to a gap to an evolving language.

All things evolve.

This is just another take on it!

Same with my Niece.... I discourage her from saying that as I can....

Written and spoken language is very important... I mean, do not get me wrong, slang has been around and evolving for a very long time.... But....I just do not want to imagine a world in which people are saying things such as ' Like OMG, I was all LOL at that guy. He was totally FYI about his car, but I was like TMI dude. TTYL....

If there ever is a chance to show any visiting alien civilizations that we are intelligent.... Well... Let's just say that we might just be passed over.... when they see that our conversations skills are up to par with Koko the sign language speaking Gorilla.

What do you expect from an era where people waste a perfectly good working cell phone to send text messages to other perfectly good working phones?

Lets see, dial a number and talk to someone, or wear out my thumbs sending a text message while driving and possibly causing an accident?

Hey, maybe a few decades from now speech will be obsolete, and everything will be text?

OMG!

The language is still written and spoken, and even more quickly processed by the brain because of the way its structured. Although I believe there is a time and place for this, such as internets and texting, I don't believe that laws and and scientific papaers should contain "lulz" and the like.

C'mon guys, look at things from different perspectives and see things for what they are.

a friend of my daughter was grounded because she didn't speak normal in public. Her mother took her to a clothing store and the girl talked in Internet and sms language to the sales lady, so now she's grounded untill she learns to speak properly... my own daughter also uses 'lol' as a word instead of a simple laugh... it's frustrating!
that said,
a recent study in my countries schools reveals that even on the exams the students use sms language so much that some teachers are considering to allow it. According to some Uni professors "we must be glad that the youth is 'reading' and 'writing' again and that it is just another evolution of language...

I don't mind really, language is something we have invented why cant we change or add to it from time to time, will the world really change if some people say LOL I know what they mean when they say it so I don't see how it would change anything.

Language evolves over time, just think of the way people talked 100 years ago, and remember dialects too, I'm Scottish and I know tons of words most of you have probably never heard before...

I'm with ya there. Net speak drives me bloody nuts. It's lazy when you type it and it's downright offensive when it's spoken. Shakespeare must be turning in his grave.

They don't have the attention span required.

So who defines properly? If majority then I guess we can assume it wont take long till acronyms etc. become 'proper' language. I personally think that it's the natural evolution of language. It slims down and simplifies all the time untill in the end human will just go "po piy orf enc oink donk"

when aliens do come for us, the first thing they'll see is a bunch of people being led around by four legged, furry animals. when they see the humans bending down to scoop up the poop, they'll already have a good idea as to who's in charge. when they try to speak to us and get acronyms and slang, they'll wave their tentacles and leave.
