The way I see it, they have so much information to convey to each other that shorthand seems logical. If we don't keep up we will be left behind. It reminds me of the difference some time ago between e-mail and snail-mail. I expect both will disappear with the passing of 40+ generations. When we get implanted computers with Wi-Fi like capabilities any without will be fossils.

In dutch language (im dutch) LOL is an actual word, it means "fun".
For us dutchies the meaning of 'lol' as loughing out loud and 'lol' as fun isn't so far appart, when I use it on the internet it means I think something is funny, not that I'm actually laughing.
I think the term LOL has gotten that meaning overall.

As in my above post, I challenge you to show me the difference between ASAP & FYI and LOL & OMG. I think these two acronyms are unfairly denigrated for being associated with the younger internet and text generation.

What about IMO? AFAIK? IIRC?

And as has been mentioned in this thread before, what about the ATS specific acronyms, like TPTB or MSM?

Don't get me wrong, I cringe if I hear someone say LOL, although I do think OMG is acceptable (although I wouldn't use it myself). I just think we need to challenge our perceptions of what is acceptable communication. If it's a question of 'The Queen's English', then why stop at LOL and OMG? There are plenty of ways in which the English language is being violated daily.

no. lol stands for laughing out loud. she wasn't. it isn't efficient, it's facetious. I know she meant to say "that's funny" but that is what she should have said.

if I'm in the middle of a meeting, is it ok for me to stand up and say brb?

hell, it isn't ok for anyone to repsond to a text while meeting with me. if they do, I stand up and walk out. when they ask why I got up, I explain that my time is important so, when they are ready to respect that, I will sit down with them.

to talk to me like you're chatting with someone in an aol chat room? no thanks.

What I got from the phone "lol" was the fact that she chose to actually say "ell oh ell" as opposed to just laughing. To me that is a reprogrammed brain in so many words.

Ik ben niet nederlands, maar je kunt zien hoe deze nieuwe technologie maakt het soo eenvoudig om direct te communiceren in verschillende talen. Zelfs degenen die niet je eigen.

Persoonlijk vind ik het gebruik van de nieuwe technologie kan alleen goed worden

(I am not dutch but you can see how this new technology makes it soo easy to communicate instantly in various languages. Even those that are not your own.

Personally I think use of the new technology can only be good) - Google translate

I actually did this is a Russian client the other day. and it worked!! even he had to look twice to see if was artificially generated!

And don't worry about replies, you can put it back through the other way. So electronic communication really is bringing us all closer together. Just look at us!

BTW as long as there are Dutch, the English language is safe!!! hahaha

the only "word" you mentioned that, in my mind, deserves entry, is asap.

for the same reason as snafu.

because you don't say the letters, you say it as a word.

if you said ay es ay pee it would be an acronym and, last I checked, acronyms are not allowed in scrabble.

if people said the word, instead the letters, sure, make it a word.

I understand the google translation, sure, but it didn't translate in correct dutch, verbs are used all wrong and, to my surprise, it is using dialect! lol
I know dutch is one of the hardest languages to learn and to translate though, sometimes my english is better then my native language... to many gramar rules! hehe
so yes your english is safe.... for now *eg*

maybe google translator should add a txtmsg to text translation

Language requires a high degree of abstraction, relatively speaking. This is an additional layer of abstraction is all. I recall hearing of a study which demonstrated that those with the highest usage of shorthand had the highest abstractive abilities. This is in no way an indication of dumbing down. It's obviously an indication that a global culture is emerging, which places a higher value on efficiency and effective communication, rather than sticking to traditional, proper terminologies.

I think that nearly everyone who is complaining is a J on the mbti temperament. You're more left-brained, and stuck inside a box, IMO. Just an opinion. Please don't take offense.

I say we bookmark that post of yours and label it as a prediction. The chances of Google doing something like that are very good imo.

I misunderstood. Darned language. I though you said that she said lol, when she said the letters l, o and l separate. I misunderstood cause when I say lol I say that as a word.
