i live here in hawaii , big island , kailua-kona, luckily i live above the inundation zone but about a mile from the coastline, many residents have evacuated from homes below me in my town, i can see car lights all along the road ways.. about 2 1/2 hours to go till first waves, we'll just have to see what happens hope for the best.

We didn't have any major disasters the last time we had a "supermoon",

This seismic activity is unlikely to be related. I would pick a different celestial object.

Hmmm, well, at least you tried I guess. But there's nothing there to really go by. I'm afraid I just can't believe the sky is glowing based on the current reports.

Am in contact with family in the Philippines via skype..

Trying to get news updates from there, but skype is breaking up a little..

Not much different to report yet.

Many areas of the Philippines have a warning.

BBC just said tsunami should be about to hit the Philippines...Indonesia in an hour..

There have been mixed reports of an oil refinery and also a power plant on fire.

At the latitude of this earthquake, the Pacific plate moves approximately westwards with respect to the North America plate at a velocity of 83 mm/yr. The Pacific plate thrusts underneath Japan at the Japan Trench, and dips to the west beneath Eurasia. The location, depth, and focal mechanism of the March 11 earthquake are consistent with the event having occurred as thrust faulting associated with subduction along this plate boundary.

I'm just up the coast in Waikoloa, cars are streaming up. Lucky you're inland, I'm a bit up from the coast myself.

i cannot even begin to imagine the pure mayhem and misery that has been caused by the sheer violence by this quake.

Gutted to see what's happening over there, and I hope as many people as possible are safe.

Am just posting something in response to this post though, and in no way believe it.

Went to the store a couple hours ago, the gas stations were packed... Felt the car shake and confirmed that there was a small earthquake here in Hawaii... It was a little unnerving that the earthquake happened about 2 mins before the hourly tsunami warning sirens that have been going off tonight.

At home now... We are about half a mile from the ocean.

We have decided to stay home.

I feel strangely calm right now even with all of this happening.

President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III on Friday ordered the mandatory evacuation of residents in coastal areas in 19 provinces expected to be affected by tsunami waves. Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the first tidal wave is expected to hit Batanes Group of Islands at 5:46 p.m. and will affect Cagayan, Ilocos Norte and Isabela. Residents living in coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean of the following provinces were also ordered to seek higher ground.

edit :

Tohoku Electric Power Co. says smoke was observed coming out of the building, which is separate from the plant's reactor, and the cause is under investigation. The plant is in Miyagi prefecture.

a month ago a guy i worked with who is native american told me that his tribe has been having visons that the would be a tsunami to hit the usa west coast from march 11-13 he even left to new mexico yesterday. im kind of tripping out right now

this is really shocking, the images and video are horrifying and i really feel for the people that were not able to outrun the tsunami.
