China's Liu tops list of Nobel Peace Prize hopefuls

OSLO (Reuters) - Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo is tipped to win the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize, according to a leading bookmaker, as the Nobel Committee seeks to restore its authority after criticism of the 2009 pick of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Why the Nobel Peace Prize should go to Liu Xiaobo

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the foremost organiser for human rights and democracy in China would reaffirm the values held most dearly by mankind, writes Xu Youyu, philosopher, professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and holder of the Olof Palme Chair, Sweden for 2001-2002.

Honestly mate. You are wasting your time on here.

You will be argueing till the cows come home.

The Chinese armchair experts in their basements and parent's studies will never know anything other than the one-way propaganda they've been fed.

For a conspiracy site...people like you who proffer the truth...well...just look at the treatment.

Ahhh...never mind..just wanted to to say....it's kind of like a fresh breath of air that someone finally speaks facts and reality as opposed to the CNN/Cramer/American Idol crap most here buy into.

Cheers

Ignorant?

Only an ignorant person would have such a myopic point of view on the subject. You posted a 60 year old report by one source at the time and that is supposed to condemn the whole country and it's entire history?

I noticed how you left out China's not so pleasant treatment of the indigenous populous since their acquisition of the territory.

You can try to paint it anyway you wish.
Doesn't mean the world has to believe it.

You don't seem to understand several critical things

There are some fundamental things and one of them is that a country cannot be annexed or controlled against its will.

A good example is the Vietnam War. Why did the USA fail to occupy the country? because the Vietnamese wanted independence. The population of Vietnam was 32 million before the war, and almost 6 million Vietnamese died or was wounded in Vietnam. Vietnam won against the United States because they didn't give up no matter how many Vietnamese the Americans killed, the Vietnamese made it perfectly clear to the USA, you want our land, you will have to kill everyone of us.

And this is one of the fundamental reasons for the end of Imperialism the development of guerilla warfare made it so that occupying a colony was not longer economically feasible. The Guerillas blew up roads, destroyed infrastructure and collapsed mines while killing occupying soldiers by the boatful.

The same thing is happening now in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Depending on how badly they want the USA out it will happen.

You claim that most of the Tibetans do not want to be under China.

Then how come in almost every occupation in history like the japanese occupation of China and Korea had many active Guerillas, Iraq and Afghansitan both have active guerillas.

So where are the Tibetan guerillas resisting the Chinese from inside Tibet?

China's annexation of Tibet is similar to Germanys annexation of Austria, it was mostly supported by both sides and was relatively bloodless.

Unlike him, i have lived in China, and travelled China. My wife, who is Chinese also made a documentery (80 days around china) and she spent alot of the time in tibet.

I never said China was perfect, no country is. But all this blaming china for everything is getting a bit boring now

Rumors of Nobel for Liu Xiaobo

Is China campaigning to keep one of its citizens from winning a Nobel Prize?

The past week or so has seen a steady resurgence of speculation that imprisoned Chinese writer and political activist Liu Xiaobo might be short-listed for the Nobel Institute’s Peace Prize. Liu is known for being the principal author of Charter 08, an impassioned petition for democratic reforms that became an underground sensation after it was circulated in December 2008 with the signatures of several respected Chinese intellectuals. Chinese authorities detained Liu at the time of its publication and sentenced him on Christmas Day last year to 11 years in prison for “inciting subversion of state power.”

Don't worry about it for now.

Anyone who bothers to look into it will know the full-on attrocities and hell Tibet was under re the so called 'nobel peace' winner.

Truly? It is too much for most. They will not believe it. The only way you can believe, is to do as you (and I) have done and speak first hand to those involved.

The attrocities, torture, serfdom and hell the Tibetans lived under prior to Chinese help was abominable.

Yeah
I know I sound like a Chinese schill. But I'm not. Look into it. Please.

We know what happened there was bad, it was terrible. No one is saying it was not. Unlike you, me and some other people don't deny this, like you have denied, or not even answered some of the questions put to you.

seriously chinese dictating who gets a nobel peace prize..............hmmm hello? communist!!!!!!!!

According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to the person who
“ ...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"

does china or any citizen there in really follow in the guidelines of that? no.

chinas actions with japan contradict this chinas actions with the us contradict this chinas actions agianst its own people of the past contradict this.

nobel peace prize is the work of promoting peace and if china thinks they deserve one hell just make a knock off

I know I AGREE. I enjoy watching them get bent out of shape over this non issue.
It's really pathetic if you ask me.

Considering Obama got it after 9 months in office, I really don't think winning a Nobel Peace Prize means all that much any more. China needs to chill and not worry about things as meaningless as this.

That's exactly why I find the subject hilarious.
Why threaten over this? It seems to me that TPTB in China are confused with their internal power and external limitations when it comes to how others feel around the world.

Thanks Antar I haven't seen you in a while.
I also hope he receives the award. That way this whole thing will just prove the world isn't going to come to a screeching halt over one mans stance.

I agree with the poster that said the award was devalued when given to Obama.

Also, it means nothing anyways, absolutely nothing.

Exactly.
Why should a whole country get bent out of shape and start making threats?
