China's just going through the paranoid teething stage of the emerging super power. But your right needlessly so here. There is no way the strangle hold is going to be weakened by the publicity this guy may receive. They are definitely afraid of icons, and symbols.

Indeed. Also theres alot of talk about things not really relevant like the integrity of the Nobel anymore etc. Those are side issues from the fact that China wants to dictate who is given it.

Considering Obama got it after 9 months in office, I really don't think winning a Nobel Peace Prize means all that much any more. China needs to chill and not worry about things as meaningless as this.

And...wait for it...the very first reply redirects the thread from a Chineese dissident to an Obama hate-fest!

You gotta love ATS...Wow.

If that's how you want to see it. I was just pointing out how little the Nobel Peace Prize actually means.

In your opinion...you understand that much, don't you?

As the OP clearly stated, the Nation of China thinks enough of the Nobel Peace Prize to threaten Norway with consequences if Norway awards the prize to a Chinese dissedent.

While the OP never mentioned President Obama..

So you had Norway's position, China's position and the dissedents cause amongst your choices to think or comment about.

You chose...I hate Obama.

A contribution not up to your standards in my opinion.

That's how I see it.

In either case China shouldn't be threatening another country over whether or not they choose somebody they disprove of for the award. Let them run their country that way not the world IMHO.

Ok, I'm not sure why exactly you feel the need to come out swinging but there's really no need for it. Apparently my post hit a sensitive nerve somehow. A bit silly if you ask me, but whatever floats your boat.

And yeah, it is my opinion that the Nobel Peace Prize isn't really worth anything. Thus the reason I posted what I did. There are plenty of people out there who do more humanitarian work than anyone who's actually won the thing, but they get no recognition. But you get upset because I brought up Obama as an example? How about Gore? Will he work? He got his for talking about climate change. Not for promoting peace, not for increasing fraternity between nations, for talking about climate change.

China issues warning to Nobel panel

The Chinese government has warned that relations with Norway could suffer should a Chinese dissident be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2010. Deputy Foreign Minister Fu Ying conveyed that message during a visit to Norway earlier this year, Nobel Institute director Geir Lundestad told Norwegian
broadcaster NPK.

The institute assists the five member Nobel Committee in selecting the winner. This year’s prize is to be announced October 8. A handful of Chinese dissidents, including imprisoned Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo, AIDS activist Hu Jia, and human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, are believed to be among the record 237 nominees this year.

OK, So now China wants to be able to dictate who gets the Nobel Peace Prize.
Does this strike anybody as a bit paranoid on the Chinese part? I mean the newest up and coming Super power always seems to be afraid of single individuals.

The Dali Lama and now this.

Yeah the Chinese are beginning to be a real pain in the panda if you ask me. They showed up here in California a few years ago trying to influence local law makers not to allow that spiritual group which was kicked out of China. Can't remember the name. The Chinese guys were allowed to sit in on council sessions, given their fifteen minutes of fame and then told to go suck figs. They were last seen near Fresno looking for fig orchards.

The peace prize is a joke. How the hell they gave it to the Dali Lama is beyond me. Do any of you people actually know what Tibet was like when the Dali Lama ruled? do you have any idea?

Deli Lama is a very dangerous man, and it amazes me he has so many followers who either know nothing about his past, or block it out. And they give this man the peace prize!

China may be making this announcement just as a test.

A test to see how whipped the rest of the world is today.

Here in the US they already know we are whipped because we
still allow in their goods after they were proven contaminated.

We will allow in goods made by child labor and political prisoners
working as slaves.

The Iphone plant is so bad they have had 10 suicides there.

www.guardian.co.uk...

We allow US companies to leave massive toxic waste dumps in
other countries causing cancer, and other ailments.

en.wikipedia.org...

We do not give a damn about these other ppl, and by and large we
do not even give a damn about our fellow citizens.

Our concern is mostly an act, and actions speak louder than words.

Personally I am amazed these ppl in Chinese prisons are not dead.

It must be because they fear them more as martyr's than as prisoners.

Falun Gong:

Falun Gong (alternatively Falun Dafa) is a system of beliefs and practices founded in China by Li Hongzhi in 1992. The practice emerged at the end of China's "qigong boom", a period of growth and popularity of similar practices. Falun Gong differs from other qigong schools in its absence of daily rituals of worship,[1] its greater emphasis on morality, and the theological nature of its teachings.[2][3] Western academics have described Falun Gong as a "spiritual movement" based on the teachings of its founder,[4] a "cultivation system" in the tradition of Chinese antiquity,[5] and sometimes a new religious movement (NRM). Falun Gong places a heavy emphasis on morality in its central tenets – Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance (Chinese: 真、善、忍).[6] Its teachings are derived from qigong, Buddhist and Taoist concepts.[5][7][8][9]

a whole lot less of anyone else.

The US shifting most of its industry there is to merely remove the industrial might that
helped the US help win WW2.

Ppl truly have no idea of the level of evil that is happening via the government in China.

If I did believe in religion I'd hope there is a VERY special place in hell for these ppl
who do this to other humans beings, and it reminds me of the Nazi Scientists from WW2
who had lamp shades made of human skin.

How we do business with these ppl is beyond me.

“Free" people should know a quite simple truth:
when you reward dissidents who want to promote your "value" to China, you offend communists.
when you reward separatists who want to split China, you offend Chinese people.

Wow. Lets assume they do get the Prize soon. This would mean that in the last few years we've seen....

1. a Nobel Peace Prize for Al Gore, the powerpoint wanna be movie director
2. a Nobel Peace Prize for B. Obama, for his....incredible.....words.....and.....potential.....to....possibly....advance stuff....in the future?

and to top it all off:

3. a Nobel Peace prize awarded because the winner threatened the committee.

What a prestigous, prestigous honor.

China is a bully.

China has no right to dictate to anyone.

China is confident that it will soon rule the world.

Get a grip!

what are the opinions of this "cult leader" when it comes to gay people? In fact, what are his views when it comes to mixed race relationships?

'The disgusting homosexuality shows the dirty abnormal psychology of the gay who has lost his ability of reasoning at the present time8.'

On mixed marraige

'By mixing the races of humans, the aliens make humans cast off gods,' he is quoted as saying in a lecture in Switzerland

Quots like that would worry any governments around the world, don't you think?

You focus on their view on gays.

In Christianity the bible condemns gays a great deal, as does the Koran,
this group is no different than them.

So you are for religious persecution and torture of ppl ???

Are you for rounding up all the ppl that are anti-gay ???

Use any force necessary to get them round to your way of thinking ???

I guess under Red China with the organ harvesting things are much better now.

www.weeklystandard.com...

There is plenty of bad management to go around.

I'd take the Tibetan monks over the Red Chinese any day of the Millennium.

The monks may not be perfect, but they are what they are and have been that
way for over 6 centuries.

I see them as a lesser threat than Red China any day of the year.

Anyone a member of the Rockefeller family endorses as "the model society" is likely quite evil.

No i don't agree with the torture of these people. Put in my opinion, its a cult, and a dangous cult. I see this cult more like heavens gate!

In an interview with Time Magazine Asia, 10 May, 1999, he was quite specific about the role of aliens in the present troubled times.

TIME: Why does chaos reign now?
Li: Of course there is not just one reason. The biggest cause of society's change today is that people no longer believe in orthodox religion. They go to church, but they no longer believe in god. They feel free to do anything. The second reason is that since the beginning of this century, aliens have begun to invade the human mind and its ideology and culture.
TIME: Where do they come from?
Li: The aliens come from other planets. The names that I use for these planets are different. Some are from dimensions that human beings have not yet discovered. The key is how they have corrupted mankind. Everyone knows that from the beginning until now, there has never been a development of culture like today. Although it has been several thousand years, it has never been like now.
The aliens have introduced modern machinery like computers and aeroplanes. They started by teaching mankind about modern science, so people believe more and more science, and spiritually, they are controlled. Everyone thinks that scientists invent on their own when in fact their inspiration is manipulated by the aliens. In terms of culture and spirit, they already control man. Mankind cannot live without science.
The ultimate purpose is to replace humans. If cloning human beings succeeds, the aliens can officially replace humans. Why does a corpse lie dead, even though it is the same as a living body? The difference is the soul, which is the life of the body. If people reproduce a human person, the gods in heaven will not give its body a human soul. The aliens will take that opportunity to replace the human soul and by doing so they will enter earth and become earthlings. When such people grow up, they will help replace humans with aliens. They will produce more and more clones. There will no longer be humans reproduced by humans. They will act like humans, but they will introduce legislation to stop human reproduction.

What i am trying to say is, people are focusing on all "the good" these cults or deli lama are, and not even mentioning the more sinister aspects of them. Basically swipeing them under the carpet.

Honestly all religions are cults, the bigger ones are just left alone because they
have massive power and influence because their members are often in the
government.

The lesser religions are persecuted because their beliefs are not accepted
by the others, but basically all religion is bunk.

Most religions practice genital mutilation of children, and it is accepted.

My point is Tibet has been Tibet for 600+ years, long before there was a communist China.

Tibet may have had higher mortality due to lack of science and medicine,
but it was their choice, they could leave.

In china they have organ harvesting of political prisoners.

The former regime of China ran and hid in Taiwan, and its funny the guy
in the video give the Tibetan peaceful leaders hell over it, but not the
former leaders of China, lol.
