Even better is us lucky ones that pay into the system/ scam our whole lives then become disabled yet denied social security because we are still breathing and walking, count me into that group, pay for 20yrs into the system then need a little help now that I'm screwed up from working my ass off and because some minority groups that bleed the system dry people in my shoes get denied. But thank you America for still being there and hopefully one day we will get it right again. Me at least I am still able to do "little" things to contribute to my families income, although by the time you work out the hourly wage I am pretty sure that slave shops in China are making more than me. OP thank you for paying into the corrupt system that unfortunately I will not be able to use, but rest assured people who don't need it will be living a great life on your time and money, I feel your frustration I really do.

Those that did not buy into "cash for clunkers". Those of us who have not recieved one extra dollar from the federal government. I feel that those who have taken advantage of all these programs owe us a "thank you", and an "I'm sorry".

A "thank you", because every one of these social programs, come directly out of our pockets.

An "I'm sorry", because you were told from an early age what it would take to make it, and you ignored the advice. An "I'm sorry", because you are not willing to put in the work or hours to promote your own existense, therefore you "need" me.

You "need" me because I'm willing to do and must do the work you are unwilling to take care of to support yourself due of your lack of ambition so that I can not only live my life but help you survive as well.

All I'm saying is that, if you are going to milk me year after year, an occasional, "Thank You, and I'm Sorry" would make me feel better about getting robbed.

I agree with the general theme here, but you also make a lot of assumptions about the people in need of these social programs. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have caught all the breaks in their life and quite a few of these are hard-working people. It's my honest opinion that if you, as an individual are putting in the effort on your end, and you need a little government help, that you should be entitled to some form of assistance. Citizens should help their government, and governments should help their citizens.

I was going to say something that was helpful and what not but I opted for this instead.
I am a disabled veteran who draws SSI and medicaid for my kids. I put in 14 long years of NO welfare, NO social programs, NO Unemployment. I feel like I DESERVE to withdraw what I PUT INTO THE SYSTEM. So if you feel like you are supporting ME... oh well. I supported someone else for 14 YEARS, I need it and after all that time, I'M TAKING IT.
Have a wonderful day.

I think you're right to a point OP: an occasional thank you would be appreciated by us that work and provide the tax base, however (and this may be based upon English culture not American culture) it is quite impolite to ask for one directly.

Also in America you have Labor Day as a national holiday to commemorate the worker and your contribution to your nation's history. That's quite a nice thank you I'd say.

Thanks you? for what? i got paid off from a job, in a small town where jobs are few and far between. My only option was higher education, something i was told by alot of people who had trades was not always the best idea. Before i could enroll in higher education i received government payouts, to help with little things for me and my son, like, oh, i dont know food and stuff. You know, the basic things every human being is born entitled to. So for 5 months i looked for work in an industry i had worked in for years which was now declining, couldnt get a job doing that so looked for anything, couldnt get a job doing that either, and you want a thank you? You deserve no thanks from me, if you lost your job and needed food, would we just let you strave? There are hard working honest people out there who through no fault of their own end up unemployed and dependent on support from the governement as they have no family to turn to, so dont be so high and might, not everyone is on the same strata as you seem to be on

Great post, OP.

You said it, brother or sister!

It makes me laugh hysterically every time I see one of these old folks or republicans talking on TV about Obama being a socialist. I wonder if they ever enjoyed:

1) Paid Vacation
2) Paid Retirement Benefits (be it from a private company or the Govt)
3) Paid Sick Time
4) A 40 hour work week
5) Weekends off
6) A safe working environment
7) Government subsidies on ANYTHING
8) A well paid job

The list goes on. ALL of the above were made possible by movements that were considered "socialist" at the time they were implemented.

In a truly free market economy, none of the above would ever happen.

I agree with the premise that all of us need to be thankful when others help people in need. It's unfortunate that we cannot choose to help our neighbors, instead the assistance is managed by a government that eats up as much of the money as they can in the process.

Since I am one of the people that work 60-80 hours a week, I think that we are suckers for doing so!

Were our lives given to us just to work most of it away? Isn't it more important to spend time bettering ourselves and loving our family, rather than working for an oppressive system that forces people to work for many years, just to make a good life for themselves?

We are morons! Our lives are nothing more than a target for taxes and corporations. Maybe the welfare folks got it right.....

Thank you for being a mindless sheep!

Work, eat, drink, shop useless things, get drunk, sleep, work, eat, drink, shop more useless things, get more drunk, sleep, work, etc, etc...

I have trouble accepting this insane way of living and I have trouble being a brick to be pushed around by others. I just want to climb trees and eat bananas!

There is no doubt that a large percentage of the people receiving support through social programs are "working the system". But that is an acceptable price to pay to be able to help the people who truly need it.

People who live on welfare for extended periods of time tend to absorb and entitlement mentality. Thank you is not in their lexicon. Just one of the reasons welfare is considered a form of imprionment without walls.

Yet still have time to visit online message boards. Seriously, how do you even have time to sleep? Or are you just stealing from your employer by doing it on company time? If so, it kinda makes the "moral high ground" somewhere far above you.

Please stop with the victim act, people. If you're working 80 hours a week, you're racking up some serious overtime, so I'd hope you use no social programs. Oh, and as your income goes up, so do your taxes. Weird, huh?

I haven't bothered to read all the threads, I tried but I could not abide such arrogance, so maybe someone else commented.

Here's the deal: got a mortgage? you're a parasite. Farmer? parasite. Been to college? parasite. Got kids stuffing their fat faces with subsidized school lunches? Parasite. Like eating your chocolate? parasite.

All these and more are subsidized, you and your family haven't paid the real price ever, all of us have kicked in for you.

So instead of your breathtaking arrogance try to cultivate a little humility, only in this country could someone as lacking in original thought as you live a life most of the world will never come close to.

Thank you or your kind for singling me out of the workforce for layoff. Your blind adherence to the system that destroys lives so that you may claim to have one. You cower at the prospect of standing up for what is right, when it would mean the end of your self righteous existence. You actively conform to the standards set out by those of your authority. You follow the masses so that you will not be singled out by the followers of the system. You have my thank you. You are responsible for waking me up to the lies your kind spews and self gloating of all you do for me. You claim to do justice but you do nobody justice. You hypocrites!
