Have any of you guys seen Mark Hunt in action? Hes moved into the UFC from K1 and Pride... doesnt look like hes doing great, but I was fortunate enough to train with him and some of his students a few times back here in Oz. All round great guy - hope he climbs the ranks.

Much respect for Hunt! I think as far as toughness, he's as tough as they come, with a rock jaw! I kind of think his best days are behind him after he got his arm snapped, but I don't know for sure. I'd love to see him climb the ranks but man are the divisions getting full with all the up and coming fighters, especially as the sport's popularity grows, from continent to continent.

Samoans are built like tanks!

I think he will find it tough, but fair play to him making it thus far!

Can you remember Tank abbot? what ever happened to him?

Tank was almighty in the street brawl days but when more rounded opponents came in they stomped on him, plus he never could go without gassin' out really bad.

Now that kind of # pisses me off, that dude can't even handle some hallucinogenics and another dude dies because of it. What kind of # is that, it's these kinds of dipshnizles that give mma a bad name. They really need to start training a little on the mind over matter thing, thing instead of repetition and reflex and strength even technique, and going straight forward in a fight. Maybe then they could handle some strange voices in there heads, without loosing it. I mean wtf kind of # is that. It's really just tragically sad.

Hey galado, I hear ya man, a one in a million worse, worse case scenario. I am wondering if the guy was on the juice too. I have seen guys snap on roids and beat the hell out of random people as well as their best friends, totally out of control. I am wondering if the space created during the trip was suddenly filled with a primal and uncontrollable rage. I would never say this incident is indicative of mma fighters, but rather a tragic event involving unstable people. Tripping should come with a warning and always have some forethought applied, and is not for everyone. Thanks for the reply...

Welcome hawkiye, thanks for joining on the thread and always glad to meet another fan. This year should be a really good one. I am looking forward to Strike Force's heavyweight tournament as well as the ufc. Just found out Rampage will be fighting Thiago SIlva and possibly James Tony. Really looking forward to Silva/Belfort too.
Thanks for chiming in,

I am really looking forward to Silva Belfort also. Sonnen really broke the Silva mystique IMO. Belfort has the tools I am hoping he pulls it off, but Silva is a beast and it won't be easy.

I think Rampage takes Thiago. He looked good against Machida IMO. Some think Machida won that fight but I watched it a couple times and I give it to Rampage. Machida was too little to late in the final round IMO

Nah this incident don't say nothing about mma, just this one dude, and he had zero discipline. I mean I used to practice martial arts, but to lazy and got other problems now a days, so I just lift weights so I don't get bored, and to keep in shape...But the first thing I learned is when under pressure, the first thing you got to do is "no mind" that just basically means, don't think about #, just relax and let your instinct and training take over....Which has helped me in more then one situation....And that is what that dude should of done, freaking sit down and chill the # out, # even try to meditate, before his fears take over, which they did and he ended up doing something really stupid.

But anyways enough about that guy, and just to say that I haven't watched much fights lately, but was reading this thread and saw that silva fought sonnen some time ago. So I goggled the fight, and dam Silva looked like he forgot how to punch and kick in that fight, it definitely was one of his off days, he just looked clumsy and was winging punches that had nothing behind them.

But you got to give the dude credit, he just kind of took it from sonnen and stayed calm, and won by triangle at the end. It's the name of the game...in his past fights he looked unstoppable and on point with his punches and kicks, especially in that forest griffin fight he had, were some of the stuff, especially that punch at the end that kod forest was like something out of the matrix, were neo dodges and stares at the bullets going in slow motion. He just kind of stared at forest punch, with his hands at the belt, then pop, just landed one on the chin, like he was bored... But in the sonnen fight he just looked clumsy, but won in the end.

I am hoping to see the best Silva show up too. My personal take on it is the last year + he has not had any competition so I think he is one of those fighters that responds and matches his opponents skills, otherwise, as a champion he plays it safe. He did have a cracked rib during the Sonnen fight which explains his lack of action.
Machida? I am glad to see his one dimension coming up short in overall competition. He had a crafty angle for a while with his reverse punch. people were not used to defending the angle of that strike and to Machida's credit, he did have that strike mastered!
Rampage vs Thiago should be a good fight and I will root for Rampage, but I don't think I would bet money on that fight, too close imo.

Peace,

Moving on? Agreed!

Yea I could not understand Silva's poor performance til I found out about his rib, and I can attest to a bad rib slowing you down, especially in a fight!
Silva is a master and I hope he has not moved below his peak. Vitor will surely bring either the best or worst out of Silva though.

I have my doubts about the Silva rib story. Reason being is the story changed. Silva says he injured the ribs in training then later his trainers says he injured them in the fight and complained between rounds 1 and 2.

I say if he was he was injured it was in the fight. he looked off because Chael nullified his game with his takedowns. This was no Damian Mia BJJ guy trying take downs this was championship wrestling take downs. And that is Silvas weakness.

My personal observation is he got clocked and hurt by Sonnen early and did not expect it. He underestimated Sonnen especially his stand up. Lets face it none of us expected Sonnen to lay a glove on him least of all Silva himself. But he did and he did it several times. Not to mention Sonnens brutal ground and pound. I was so pissed when he got triangled after the beating he put on Silva. But he is known to be be susceptible to submission and was tired in the last round but instead of coasting he continued to the brutal ground and pound and got careless and that was all Anderson needed. Thats why he is the champ.

A good wrestler has always been Silvas weakness. Henderson proved it in thier match when in the first round he did the same thing Chael did, but Henderson's wild striking got him caught with one of those deadly knees and opened the door to his defeat.

I am looking forward to a Silva Sonnen rematch I think Chael takes it this time around. That is provided Silva gets by Belfort first. Not an easy task. Belfort is as good a striker as Silva and awesome ground game too.

Yea whatever happened, I feel he was not all there, but I will certainly give credit to Chael too, his side mount is nasty. He has to get past his personal stuff first, roids and money laundering, but I am sure he will be back and I think he's good for the sport.
I'll have to oppose your stance on him beating Silva next time, I think Silva will take it, but not easily. Surely he is focusing on getting out of that side mount during his practice, but we'll see. Nate Q. was another one that gave Silva ground trouble, and I could not believe
Sonnen dominated Nate like he did! But again when Silva is 100%, he is a force to reckon with!
I understand GSP will be stepping up in weight and eventually challenging Silva. That's either gonna be a great fight or a boring as hell "safe play." But that is one fight I always thought could be really good.

You mean Nate Marquart. Yeah Cheal brutalized him. I read all the back stroy on Chaels use of roids and it is legit he has a legit condition he needs them for and he informed the commission properly IMO, they were covering thier asses on it.

I had not heard about the money laundering I guess I better go look that one up. Geeze this guy steps in one cow pie after another LOL.

Yeah I am looking forward to the Strike force GP also. Also wondering when we will see a Overeem vs Fedor.

Hey BMT, thanks for joining in

I too am looking forward to that tournament and am finally glad to hear these high caliber fighters are going to have 4 fights this year. Anything short of fighting less than 3 times a year is absurd imo, with the exception of injury of course. I think Fedor has some more great fights in him and I look forward to him and Verdum's rematch as well as him and Overeem.
-------------------------
@Hawkiye - thanks for the correction on Nate. The thing with Sonnen, as I understand it, is his injuries warranted the substance, but it was the amount and timeframe that tripped him up. Under the doc's advice he was supposed to take the prescribed amount and stop at a certain point, which would have allowed him to clear his system of the substance, which is not illegal to take, but if one's injury requires the stuff, they have to wait til it clears and they are 100%, otherwise it is a violation to fight. He was following his trainers lead though and trusted his opinion, but you know the ole adage, ignoranous is no excuse for breaking the rules

Regardless, I bet it won't happen again and I look forward to him competing again.

I'm an MMA fan.

But I only practice sports jiu jitsu. I don't really want to go the MMA route myself.
