CME's are basically a cloud, and perhaps it takes a little time for the worst of it to make its presence felt. This is just from the leading edge. I could be wrong, that's just my limited understanding of how they work.

Surely they're mixing up their scaling - even 40 feet would be colossal. 40 meters is 131.233 feet high...

CME's would only affect regions prone to tectonic movement. I just checked the NASA SOHO site and didn't see any substantial activity... But, I wouldn't rule out other cosmic forces... seems there's lots of activity lately, Haiti, Japan and now Chile.

i'm sitting at work right now. i work in the hospital and i can only imagine what it would be like.. I feel for the kids and families. My prayers are with them.

Yep, it might be a good idea.

A catastrophic earthquake off Chile in 1960 generated a tsunami in Hilo that killed 61 people. The earthquake, the largest recorded at a magnitude 9.6, sent waves of up to 30 feet to Hilo about 15 hours after the temblor, according to an online account by Pacific Tsunami Warning Center scientist Gerard Fryer.

The CME is a wave of energized particles. These particles are interacting with the planet and agitating it. The CME that occured a few days ago was just a "burp" not a CME storm. CME storm is the 2012 movie basically.

There are several volcanos listed as status:errupting on the map of South America and Central America... I dont know this map very well but I imagine this doesent mean what we think it does...
