According to an Associated Press Television News cameraman, some buildings have collapsed in Santiago and there are power outages in parts of the city.[9]

My girlfiends family is from Chile and has lots of relatives there. Her aunt lives in Santiago. Her dad managed to get a hold of her aunt somehow, apparently her apartment was destroyed, but she managed to survive.

Pretty scary stuff.

Apparently, giant waves hit some areas of Chile. In some places ships and shipping containers were carried far inland. Also, according to the first pilot on the scene to fly over the San Fernandez island half of the island was destroyed and at least 50 homes were completely engulfed in water. The town center was destroyed (as in there is nothing left) as well as the cementery. The wave was in the tens of meters high and had enough force to push water up to 70 meters a hillside of the island. That part of the island has a steady sloping terrain and the water just pushed right though. The pilot reporting this knows the island very well too.

Casualty figures will likely be in the thousands when all is said and done.

5.8 at Angol just came in. This only 29 miles from Los Angeles - no not the one in the States!!!

They are still rolling in.

This is a scary amount of quakes in a day when you conside only 2 of these are less than 5.0.

Well according to USGS it was a 5.7, but don't worry it is in a mountainous region and very deep so no one will have been affected I would imagine.

BTW there was a 4.7 there on the 22nd, Could RSOE have got muddled up?

Yup I will go for the 69, but not km - miles. Very unlikely to have affected it.

can someone explain how it's possible for an earthquake to occur in a localized area far away from any fault line and not have anything be felt on the actual fault line? Just curious because I don't know much about it. Wondering how an earthquake can occur in oklahoma for instance.

Oklahoma is on the New Madrid fault line; last time it jumped big was in the 19th century, early 1800s sometime.

I find it interesting that this earthquake is nearly the same strength as the one that struck in 1960 in the same area.
