please don`t get fooled, this woud be a war for a 5 cent drop on the price of a brent blend`s barrel.

and it appears to me that there are quite a few brits who would oblige their patriotic duties on behalf of her majesty`s graceful wishes. They`d swim down there, all the way praising her, to shoot some argies off.

heed, the only comradery present here is of the queen and BP (actually, ‘desire petroleum’ – funny company name, makes the argument a lot better; also, I said queen because it invokes images of nationalism, but I meant the government)

I don't think anyone would beleive any kind of drop in fuel prices would happen in the UK.. be a good excuse for a price hike actually
(if that is what you meant)

Nor do I think you'd find anyone responding differently in support of the Islanders with or without Queenie or oil..

Edit to add: I think most know that we will see zero benefit from any oil found down there, if it was in Argy hands they would see zero benefit and I would almost expect the same corporate to be the one getting rich..

BTW Barclays who are working on the $63bn Argentine debt swap also have stakes in Desire, why on earth did the Argentines get Barclays to help them, since Britain is such an enemy *shrugs* strange world we live in

I would happily give the Falklands back to their rightful owners.

Would you please explain to me the term ... "give the Falklands back to their rightful owners" as I don't understand...

When did Argentina have anything to do with colonizing the Falklands?

Actually, they are not. There is no indiginous population so it doesn't come under the "decolonisation" rules.

The Falklanders ARE the indigenous people, fool. It was English feet that first stepped our upon Falklands golden shores before any other humans.

The English were the first people to set foot on the Falkland Islands? Have you decided to just write your own history?

The Falklands have been colonised and re-colonised by several different countries, not to mention the fact that indigenous artifacts have been found on the island. But hey, never let the facts get in the way for a claim for someone else's land!

Were the English the first people to set foot on Ireland's emerald shores?

The islands were UNINHABITED until the Europeans got there. In all honesty, the French have probably got a better claim than Argentina.

And just because there are artifacts ... what has THAT got to do with anything. Maybe we should hand Britain back to the Romans?

Use your noggin!

I wait for Argentina to hand much of its land back to the native population, which land was occupied and stolen during Spanish colonialisation. The Third World pit, that is South America, tends to ignore its occupation of native land.

maybe you meant ENGLISH, PORTUGUESE, FRENCH and SPANISH? ever heard of independency movements? i`m brazilian and consider myself a native... and that`s entirely YOUR (european) fault. oh noes, but lets indulge your anglo-saxon guilt and bring back the 'tupi guaranis' into power-- or what`s that 0.005% LEFT of them, at least.

add: maybe you were implying that a south american coalition got togheter to create a time machine, went back in time, in order to ethnically cleanse all those nasty autochtonous population... so it`d have a legitimate claim on their territory...

I would expect the UK handle the situation, whatever happens. The US would provide what ever support they requested. I am confident they can handle this themselves.

The people in the Falklands wish to stay with the UK. If Chavez is so supportive why doesnt' he cede all the oil in his country to the the UK in exchange for the Falklands to the to Argentia?

Didn't think so. It's easy to talk the talk, harder to walk the walk.

We ARE the rightful owners!!!

WE were the first people to step foot on the Falklands and just because they are closer to Argentina, does not mean that Argentina has ANY right over the Islands.

The population are British citizens, just as British as you or I and if they were threatened, they have exactly the same right to military protection as we do.

GOD, is there no national pride any more?!?! I have no great love for our current government and disagree with many of the things we have done over the years, but I will defend my fellow Brits with my heart, my soul and my life if needed!

I have no guilt, I sleep soundly at night

But don't lecture me on returning land to its true owners. Sadly, most the Argentinian native population is extinct in its pure form. Don't blame us, you continued the policies after we left.

I mean, hey, Argentina carried out "invisibilization" on Indians in the 19th Century - after the Europeans left. So, please

This is the whole point!
Many many years ago, powerful nations sent ships around the world to discover new lands... Yes there were terrible atrocities committed, but over the last few hundred years, it has pretty much been agreed upon that our nations boundaries have been set. (I KNOW with a few notable exceptions!).

No one would realistically expect Argentina to hand their country back to the indigenous people there, any more than we would actually expect USA to hand the country back to the Native American Indians, or Australia handing back to the Aborigines.

The Falklanders are British! ... British! ... and they want to remain that way.
Just as YOU are Brazilian and would rightfully expect to remain that way. These British Falklanders are the natives.

This is just a fact!

I'm not gonna start a flame war about your ignorant stereotypical view of us but i'll do it this once...
One thing to me it sounds like you are jealous that what a tiny nation did for 600 years, America can't even do with today's technology on small nations *cough* Vietnam *cough* let alone big middle eastern ones.

also learn your history the British Empire was finished in 1997 when Hong Kong was handed over. The only reason it fell was because we went bankrupt after fighting TWO world war's and our colonies and protectorate's wanted independance.

Learn about the Commonwealth before you start blabbing your mouth off and slagging off a country and it's people that have done far more than you ever will in your pathetic little existence.

The first part only applies if you are American which is the vibe you give off and if your British.. i'd have you lined up and shot for High treason.

The UK should stay on it's freaking island and shut the hell up, you screwed the world enough. Continue being slaves, while drinking beer all day long and getting your panties in a bunch over a freaking sport match while your country crumbles under the tyranny, you seem to like it.

[edit on 22-2-2010 by Vitchilo]

I think THIS part of your "rant" sums up quite well the United States, where your obviously from.

Your Ignorance clearly shows that you are very young or very immature, and without doubt, missing a the vital months of schooling where your teacher would have informed you over the vital part that our little island played in the exceptionaly short history of your now eonomically crumbling country, which, until now, has passed the last eight years under a tyrant whom your parents voted for twice.

If more of the good Americans wernt "getting their panties in a bunch" over the fu**cking superbowl maybe George Bush and co. wouldnt be walking the streets a free men now, would they??

And with the RAF bombing them and RN bombarding Argentina and Venezuala even further into the stone age as well as aid from USAF and the USN the enemy nation's would collapse under the sheer pressure.

USA and UK may have the their differences but that was long into the past as allies and cousins we have backed each other up in some shape or form.. how many other countries could say that?

The way I see it, on the one hand you've got Chavez saying:

" We demand, and I think all of us should do the same, the withdrawal of the submarine platform, and that the English government... give that land back,"

and the other Cristina Kirchner saying: "I think the important thing is that we have achieved very strong support, something that legitimates our claims fundamentally against the new petroleum activity."

and then we've got the Mexican President Felipe Calderon reportedly saying a document has been drawn up offering Buenos Aires full support in its territorial dispute with London. Then we have the good old Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega calling for "Britain to return the territory of the Malvinas to its real owners - to return it to Argentina"

so with all this so called "very strong support" why haven't any of these nations stopped the rig drilling for oil, "Desire Petroleum, which is overseeing the operation, said drilling had started on the Liz 14/19-A exploration well at 1415 GMT"

So come on, where is this very strong support? We've started drilling, we have defence in the area, we as the British nation are sticking our asses in the air at you, take a shot if you dare! Most of this is just political talk, I wouldn't like to see a war break out over there as we would loose good men as would any other nation helping the farcical Kirchner presidency..

If this was more than talk it would have started as soon as we took the oil cap off and it hasn't, and the reason is because it's all talk, Kirchner knows she's on the way out and want's to make a mark in history with her name on it, but she doesn't have the balls or the military to back it up.
