If either "they" or anyone who might consider such a time advantageous to further an agenda decides to, they could take everything out with the power and water grids.
They are capable of being controlled remotely and, sure, it may use the public Internet plumbing to a degree, but they do not REQUIRE the Internet in order to produce and store energy. Think about how absurd that sounds.
The power they store then travels on electrical lines to other facilities to usage by all of us - no Internet required.

All sites and power plants can be accessed by the internet. The control center in Golden CO is a MAJOR center for controlling gas and electric to the Western US. Yes, they have access in India to all the servers and network. Scary.

And don't we all know what happens when they plan an "Exercise" ?
Hmmm?
That was my thought exactly. How many times have we seen an "emergency drill" happen the same day as as an "attack?" It happened on 9/11 here in the U.S. It happened on 7/7 in London. And I think, if I remember correctly...it's happened other times, too....

If they wanted to surprise the world with an "Internet meltdown" they probably wouldn't be giving us hints about it. Not that I disagree with the thought, I just don't think 9/11 or 7/7 are great comparisons.

what chance to a bunch of old men stand against the onslaught of young, savvy Chinese programmers?
Perhaps it is time to militarize Geek Squad?
Peiter Zatko--a respected hacker known as "Mudge"--has been tapped to be a program manager at DARPA, where he will be in charge of funding research designed to help give the U.S. government tools needed to protect against cyberattacks, CNET has learned.
Zatko will become a program manager in mid-March within the Strategic Technologies Office at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), which is the research and development office for the Department of Defense. His focus will be cybersecurity, he said in an interview with CNET on Tuesday.

A TOTAL LOSS OF PERSONAL FREEDOM
Be scared. Be very very scared. This is about shutting down the Net.
@#$%
NOTE: I don't mean the Net will be shut down on the 16th - the "drill" is about building "popular opinion" by scaring people into sacrificing their freedom for "personal safety" and "national security."
