This seems to be an interesting topic although I must admit I haven't read every post here.

I do belive in the sort of collective unconsciousness (call it what you will) that the OP is talking about...the Hindus have a similar concept with the "akashic library" and reincarnation, an idea shared by Jains and Buddhists, among others. (Many Greeks and Romans also believed in reincarnation, as did Manicheans and even some early Christian Gnostics...). Or perhaps its on a scientific level you could look at it as our DNA talking to us somehow...there are inborn aspects of the brain; all babies are born knowing the difference between a human face and other objects automatically, for example. There really is so much we don't understand about what we "already know."

What's always been a matter of contention is to what extent a person maintains a solid "self" that is passed down...Even within Hinduism and Buddhism there are varying answers on this. My reading of the ancient core Mahayana Heart Sutra is that what passes on is not so much an individual self as a series of "constituents" (or more technically, skandha) that make up the self or other selves. I see these as kind of "mixing and re-mixing" with each other endlessly through time on a spiritual level, which perhaps manifests on a scientific, physical level as the endless swirl of DNA...our human "family tree" actually resembles a kind of "net" more than a tree from a purely genetic perspective...

Others might think this view too radical and say there is a "core self" that passes down. I am not going to out-and-out deny the possibility but I will say there seems to be less evidence in support of this, at least from my perspective. I sometimes think people can't bear to let go of the idea of an intrinsic core self, but somehow I burned that idea out of myself (probably through several decades of Buddhist textual study) to some extent at least so the idea doesn't really bother me. Is it just a kind of misguided attachment or is there really a core self that passes down? Well that's the adamantine question, isn't it? Over ten thousand years mankind has puzzled over that one, with zealots on both ends of the spectrum.

Yes, that is what it is I am accessing, the akashic library/records aka racial/collective unconscious. I never know how to spell that though! Unfortunately things like word spellings don't come thru my link very well, considering it is pretty much right brain. And there are many other names for it as well, which varies from culture to culture. The fellow there at the portal appears to me as a native american only because that is the venue I accessed the portal from.

From what I am seeing. every life you live adds more to the 'core self' that is stored out there, and sometimes changes it, if the life was significant enough. But there is a basic "you" out there, from my own experience of remembering past lives and from what I see in the racial/collective unconscious as well.

I find it very comforting to finally be able to 'know'.
