When I saw this cartoon, it did not strike me as referring to Obama. I connected it with the democratic controlled congress, which appears to be as strong and deadly as the chimp that recently went beserk and ripped a woman's hands and face off. Now, if it was a dead proboscis monkey, then I could see the similarity between it and Obama.

plus, nancy FAILosi wrote the bill, so the monkey seems to be her

I think that this is another case of hypersensitivity around Barrack Obama. Honestly, I thought that we elected adults to the Presidency? If so, then we should expect that the President can withstand a little satire aimed in his direction.

I would also like to point out that Barrack Obama did not write the stimulus bill. I have not heard anyone claim that he did. So, why would we make the leap that the chimp represents Obama?

I think that the cartoon is clearly saying that the author of the stimulus plan was a chimp. Obama is not a chimp, so....obviously the cartoon is not about Obama. If anything, the cartoon is a comment on the bill.

I honestly never thought once that the cartoon was referring specifically to Obama, until I started reading the posts here.

All I related it to was to the story about the chimp that got shot for attacking a woman who supposedly gave him Xanax to keep him calm (and what a wonderful job she did at that)...
And to the fact that the stimulus plan appears to have been written by monkeys.

I bet even Obama wasn't offended.

But you know how the race card gets played, everyone just loves to be seen as a victim.

Oh well, I'm still angry for that poor chimp that got shot.

I like Obama as a leader! However I don't really find the cartoon in question offensive. To me the picture says, the stimulus bill is so silly that even a crazy monkey could have written it.

However, I can understand how someone may see it as racial content. None of this is new though (see below) so I think people need to take a deep breath and remember that all politicians are objects of satire.

An Example:

Does anyone remember this?

NY art show closed over Bush monkey portrait

Bush Monkeys,' a painting by 23-year-old artist Christopher Savido of President Bush, hangs at the Animal gallery on New York City's Lower East Side, December 13, 2004. The portrait of Bush using monkeys to form his image led to the closure of a New York art exhibition over the weekend and anguished protests on Monday over freedom of expression. I only find the cartoon offensive for one reason:

It implies that whoever wrote the stimulus is as intelligent as a chimp. That's an insult to chimps everywhere. BOOOO

Exactly, Obama didn't write the stimulus bill, so there's no way the monkey could be Obama.

There's nothing wrong with the cartoon. People need to grow up.

There are more important things to worry about.

Ouch. Any way you look at that, it's in really poor taste. So, is that supposed to be President Obama, or are dead animals funny? What idiot would OK that for print in a publication?

I think the Cartoonist is not quite hitting his mark but it is kind of funny in a crude way.

so far IMHO it appears that the Lefties here in the US use three common statements.

A. "Its for the Children"
B. "Racist"
C. "Hate Speech"

These buzz words are what they use to get their way and guilt people into doing what they want or silencing the people who disagree with them.

Its like when people say "I'm not racist I don't care if the person is black, white, brown, blue, purple or have polkadots." Its simple guys!!! first off people who say that have been trained to say that and second the Cartoonist was trying to make a point and get a reaction and I'm willing to bet not at all racist.

I personally didn't see this cartoon as a direct insult to Obama, but I did see the cartoon as having Racist overtones. People are stating that Obama didn't write the Stimulus bill, correct but that is not the point. There is obvious and factual history where Chimps/Monkeys have been used as a Racist mechanism against Black People, it doesn't matter whether the Congressional knowledge is accurate it's the fact that the cartoon shows two white cops and a dead Monkey, the Newspaper should easily have known the sensitivity behind that cartoon. A similar slight was done a year ago I believe with a Muslim based cartoon.

It's about Tact. People are also stating that George Bush was depicted as a Monkey, that's totally different and acceptable because there has never been a case of a Monkey being equated to a White man.

Obama didn't write it so I doubt its suppose to be him. The Democrats in the House wrote one version and the Democrats in the Senate wrote another, once each version was approved it went into committee to to make it the same, then went back to the senate and house to be voted on and in this case passed. Obama only signs it.

Please learn how your Government works.

I think a lot of people are too sensitive and need to take it for what it is. If you think GWB being depicted as a monkey is acceptable because he is white and not black is kind of screwed up and kind of racist isn't it? I mean come on. Showing preference for one person because they are of one race is by fact being racist. Just because it was used in the past to depict people of one kind of race doesn't mean squat. Ever hear of a peckerwood? If you see this Cartoon and think of Obama as the Chimp then that would be racist and I really think you should sit down and get to know yourself better. Since Cartoons showing Chimps and/or monkeys are out of the question now, what would you suggest be used? "I don't know" or any answer similar to that is not an acceptable answer.

ummmm are people really this dense? It is clear as day light that they are implying that the stimulus bill appears to be written by a chimp, given that it is full of bs and pork. Obama didn't write the bill and how dim do you have to be to think that they are comparring Obama to a chimp. They know he didn't write it, only that they feel it was written very poorly hence a chimp could have written it.

And please please tell me how in your mind it is racist to refer to Obama as a chimp? When people did it to Bush, did they have race in mind? But you can't get race off your mind. You race baters are the ones that make non racist issues racist. And to me that makes you a different yet dangerous form of racists. The fact that some of you people feel satire such as this is off limits for a certain race whereas it is ok to slander whites in the same way is exactly what racism is.

Oh, OK. So I guess the funny part I missed was that the cartoon is depicting white cops being brought in to shoot elected members of our Government (or acts by our Government that are not agreed with)? edit Sheesh, get a clue.

They called Bush a chimp, a monkey and an ape for eight years. There were plenty of cartoons depicting him as such, too.

Normally, I'd consider it to be offensive, but in this particular case, I'd say that turnabout is fair play. The other side started this. Don't whine and cry when it gets thrown back at you.

No whining here

But, I think you hard core RIGHTIES are making the same mistake as you did in the elections.

To many, this cartoon has racial undertone, if not blatent racism and why you guys would want that equated with the RIGHT and GOP "family values" is beyond me...
Those of you supporting this are making a grave political mistake.

Barack the magic negro
Terrorist
Muslim
Curious George
Shot chimp

This speaks of the fact that you open and willing to keep RACISM alive.
Then defending it?

I think if you could step back from your bullying tactics and see what this does to your GRAND OLD PILE.

I think its more of a play on words, cartoonists are smart - they know they can get flamed for anything that people perceive to be racist etc..

I see it as a shot at 'trained chimps' writing your stimulus package and that in the cartoonists view it needs to be 'put down' he's just mixed it in with a recent news article!

Play on words, thats all.. very clever I thought

Referring to Barack Obama, "The Magic Negro" was a title coined by a liberal columnist writing for the Los Angeles Times, one of the biggest Left-wing news outlets in the country. You have a problem with it, take it up with the liberal flakes in LA.

You're talking about Southern Democrats, right? Historically, the Democrat Party defended slavery, gave rise to the KKK, fought desegregation and opposed black Civil Rights for over a hundred years, right up to the late 1960s. The Republican Party, on the other hand, emancipated the slaves and proposed every important piece of Civil Rights legislation in American history.
