Oh, come on, where's the sence of humor? Everyone thought it was funny to poke fun at President Bush, but now we have obama an we suddenly have to treat him with respect? Sorry two way street.

I felt the same way about the crap with Bush.

It is offensive no matter who it is coming from.

Those that want to play party lines, go ahead. It shows real maturity. This is not about tit-for-tat.

Gotta cast my not racist vote. The cartoon very obviously is equating the chimp to those who wrote the bill, not Obama himself. However the chimp would probably have done a better job than anybody in our government in all fairness to the chimp. That chimp (Travis), was even able to use house keys and log onto the computer. The only bad taste here is that it's kinda early to be making fun of the incident, a lady did get her hands and face eaten off, and a panicked and drugged up animal that should never have been a pet was killed.

Synchronicities abound in this one.
Reinhardt saying that when a chimp appears in the state media, the market won't be doing so well.
This cartoon, and this story. www.msnbc.msn.com...

"Nash was attacked by a 14-year-old domesticated chimpanzee owned by her friend, Sandra Herold of Stamford. Police shot and killed the chimp. "

NY cartoon appears to link Obama to dead chimp

hosted.ap.org

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun.

The caption reads, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

i was thinking about getting an animal that can cook, clean and use the toilet like a normal person but have not been successfull

And honestly, the way I took the story was the old "10,000 chimps at a keyboard given enough time will write shakespear" adage.

I'd be willing to bet this was the artist's intention. Or, maybe, the artist is actually a bigot and used a double-entendra. I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time. Either way, looks like he succeeded in drawing a controversial cartoon. Me though, it's like water off a duck's back. I try to active choose not to satisfy racism with my attention.

I think the message that is trying to be portrayed here was that the stimulus package is dumb enough to have been written by a lower primate.

I don't get the impression that anyone is coming off as high and mighty. The image is interpretative and people are just chiming in with their own impressions. And of course politics being such a touchy subject, people can become passionate about it. However, as long as we remember it really comes down to interpretation, there is no need for any of us to feel our interpretation is the correct one. I don't think it's fair to accuse them of being on a high horse just as it is unfair to claim anyone who does not agree is also on a high horse. As someone else said, the image is an ink blot.

As usual, you're the voice of reason, Ashley, and you're right. I guess I'm still feeling mighty on edge from the constant attacks that we conservatives endured during the campaigns leading up to the election. Political topics, especially right now, seem to be woven on a really short fuse.

This is what its come to. The most enlightened web site I have ever found has dedicated 5 pages discussing what a dead chimp represents? Media is everywhere, blogs around the nation are going crazy over this, over this? This thread is about as nuts as the one about defining hate speech on ATS.

Its a cartoon. Some people thought it was funny, some thought it was offensive. Who the hell cares?

This web site? Enlightened? When it comes to politics? Dude - where were you when the New Yorker published their famous cover of the Barack-Michelle "fist bump" illustration? For those who forgot, it depicted Obama wearing Muslim garb, an armed Michelle as a terrorist, a portrait of Bin Laden on the White House wall and the U.S. flag burning in the fireplace. The two were doing a fist bump to celebrate their taking over America. Of course it was an illustration, but the media went apes**t over that as well because it went so far as to make light of Obama. Nevermind that the New Yorker has been doing that kind of thing for years, but this time they definately crossed the line!!!! The Obama supporters on here chimed in with similar criticisms, screaming that the illustration was in poor taste.

If it in any way depicts something negative about Obama or his wife, you can expect certain members of ATS and some of the moderators will jump on the "INAPPROPRIATE!" bandwagon just like the media will.

I wish the creator of this particular cartoon had depicted the chimp as the crazy economy, and the officers as the feds killing it.

Are you seeing what the artist wants you to see?

While I agree with you, I will also say that further investigation reveals that the cartoonist likes to do tacky shock humor.

Now... I don't particularly care for it, but he likes to make fun of Paul McCartney's ex-wife being one-legged (I find that concept offensive) -- and he likes to draw cartoons along that line. They tend to have a conservative mindset (which means that liberal me isn't going to find them that hilarious) and they tend to go for shock value (which I really dislike.)

I read the chimp as "Congress", myself.

That said, the guy has caused a furor with his cartoons before. I think the newspaper is going to have to decide whether they want to spend time defending him and his tasteless humor or whether they'll hire some other cartoonist who can make the same points without having the phone lines jam up with angry callers.

I think the "too bad Sea Kitten was already taken" cartoon on this page is particularly hilarious: www.cagle.com...

There has been a recent trend of humor=violence+offensiveness. I think it could go away now. It's had its 15 seconds of fame.

They called Bush a chimp, a monkey and an ape for eight years. There were plenty of cartoons depicting him as such, too.

Normally, I'd consider it to be offensive, but in this particular case, I'd say that turnabout is fair play. The other side started this. Don't whine and cry when it gets thrown back at you.

I don't recall any cartoons depicting someone shooting President Bush.

Do you?

Mynaeris, if you wouldn't mind, please link to the other thread dealing with this because I tried searching using the cartoonists name, the word obama & cartoon, and various other search strings and found nothing.

Also, if you wouldn't mind, please look up the word offensive in whatever dictionary you prefer. Then look up the word racist in the same dictionary.

You'll note that the two have very different definitions.

I stated pretty clearly in my post that I (and apparently a few other people) find the cartoon very offensive.

To me, comparing the President of the United States (or any elected official) to a crazy chimp that needed to be put down is offensive no matter how you look at it.

Those were my words.

I would think that if there is anyone here that is racist chief, it's you. You know what I saw when I looked at that cartoon?

100 typewriters and now only 99 monkeys.

no lie.

Yeah, everyone is going to be so sensitive to race and walk on eggshell seven though this guy is only HALF black, but I guess that's enough for some folks, isn't it? Its when crap like this matters to you that you know you're still racist, you're just in denial.

Say what you want, you're wrong, and the worst part of it is, you'll take it out on this cartoonist as a cover.

Although I disagree with calling the OP or anyone else a racist, I do agree that what you see in this cartoon is based on your previous experiences. Some people are so used to seeing double meaning in things (like myself) that it's hard to distinguish when something is hidden or simple. I don't see any hidden sun or ANY hidden Obama/Congress symbols in the image anywhere, so to me, it just seems to be the "monkeys on a typewriter" story.

The economy is plunging down the toilet, and we're focusing on a comic strip written by one guy? I'm sorry, but I'd rather deal with the things that really matter.

There is no intellectualism to this other than the racist who drew it . There are other ways to prove your point why link the president to a dead chimp. Be careful your hood is showing !!!

It's a shame that you didn't actually read anything I wrote.

I linked to an article and agreed that I found the cartoon offensive.

I never mentioned anything about race, racism, black, white or anything else.

Reading comp, chief.

I wish I had your ability to decide who is a racist based on feelings on current news items. It must be truly remarkable.

Considering your prior post, I'm not sure if you'll get the sarcasm so I'll be helpful.

How dare you invent garbage that I never said and call me a racist because of my opinion on a political cartoon.

Absolutely repulsive.

I think that what ticks me off is that they think its racist. Come off it. There is something wrong when they dont have 100 people outside the place yelling and crap because they did it with Bush but when they do it to Obama that is different? Now who is racist? Plus look at the story about the word president being the new N word. The African americans were having fun with it. Yet most Presidents were White. So that means someone else other then the whites is being Racist.

One point some may miss here is that regardless of the overt or covert message, the Post chose to run this cartoon, along with other controversial submissions from this artist. The Post as well as other news papers are desperate for sales... Controversy sells!

There is no such thing as bad press... Ask Rush! he knows.

It is a formula that works for the Post... Think of all the free advertising they are getting.

Even Sharpton fell for it....

www.cnn.com...

You have all participated in a planned sales and marketing venture!

Deny ignorance?

Anti Obama Illuminati, as good as Nixon's dirty tricks.

Taxes going up and expect streets filled with homeless cause
no one has a chimps chance against the Illuminati.

High gas, low gas, no credit with bailouts, no jobs for mortgages
and 20% more in taxes that can't be paid by fix incomers.

The Obama cover story for Bush and Chaney can't make it
against the Illuminati shield.
