I consider myself to be somewhat of a computer expert, having done multiple IT courses at TAFE specialising in multimedia and quite frankly Vista, imo, is no better than Millenium. It's almost impossible to network properly to my XP machines, constantly spams me about this and that unimportant crap, takes about 1 month to clog the processes up to a point where I basically have to reinstall it (as opposed to maybe once a year for XP)....

I could go on and on and on about Vista and how terrible it is, I am somewhat hoping that 7 is going to be decent (as decent as a Microsux product can get) but I'm not holding my breath.

Your comments alone convince me that you are only a computer expert unto yourself. "Vista, imo, is no better than Millenium" Thank you Mr Expert.

The fact is that there are virtual no system problems with Vista on Modern hardware whatsoever, the problem is a few front end user issues and peoples misconceptions of vista. Microsoft has paid a lot of money to reinvent vista as windows 7 and paid a lot of money to get the perceptions of the product out there before release... why? Because the people who moaned about vista and slammed it so hard are those who never actually used it they like the sheep of the world just followed the trend at the time which was to slam it. Sure there were people with genuine problems although I would think these where mostly hardware incomparability, vista being installed on older machines or user problems after installing crap.

I have been using Windows 7 for a couple of months now and apart from a few issues with IE8 and an overhaul to some user interfaces and finding your way around it is in effect Vista. I haven't managed to try any of the new features like multitouch and the new taskbar and GUI but these are just front end additions. Windows 7 is Vista with a better reputation, people will go into it with a different mind set and because of that like it they way they should have liked vista had they bothered to even use it.

marg as someone already said, this is a new O/S, but as you said not ready for release. Hence is called a Beta version. Vista was only intended as a stop gap measure on the road to improvement, I believe someone also pointed this out.

Although I didn't think much of Vista from a Home user's persecptive, just a shiney new O/S, it did have some great improvements for the enterprise world. When Vista was released it was stated by microsoft that vista would bring better intergartion into enterprise networks running Windows 2008 forests. These features did prove to be very good (from an Admin perspective anyway), also using powershell instead of vb has proven to be be alot stronger, but I guess this is more of Win 2008 server improvement. I am hoping these features from vista have been ported into Windows 7.

Remember the more people that download and try Windows 7 and reports the bugs, the better the final release should be. Well that is how it works in the open source world anyway.

So to all of you out there, give it a go and report those bugs.

Cheers

+1 to that. On top of all that the OEM installs of Vista with all the bloatware didnt help AT ALL. I set up a toshiba laptop for a customer today and it took something like 2 hours for it to run through its own little set up process - thats an example of the install process (and the after effects of this which is an incredably bloated OS) that many people in retail see, this forms a bad image of vista in their minds and then they pass this on to the customers who go out and tell their friends and hence one of the reasons why everyone seems to hate vista.

MS is making service pack 2 for Vista which pretty much changes Vista to Windows 7. We have windows 7 here and frankly I don't see any difference from Vista. I think maybe it is more stable. Windows 7 will be 64bit only. If you have a 32bit machine you will have to stick to Vista.

What the hell are you talking about???

Any machine can run in 64bit...Alls it does is makes it so your PC can use over 3.25gig of RAM with a maximium of 16gig

64 bit processor machines can use 64bit versions of windows vista / 7, Ultimate versions of the software can have a max of 128GB. We have a virtual Server (2008 Hyper-V) with 8 cores and 96Gig of ram which is sweet although it's never utilised which is a shame.

Alarm bells rang for me when I heard the emphasis on a quick boot time. I accept it can be indicative of lower memory consumption, but I don't know anyone in the world who is so busy that the 15 second difference between Vista and 7 reaching a working desktop is critical. And knowing Microsoft, it will mean they've shoved all their eggs into sorting out boot time rather than making the system actually run properly....

I'll wait for service pack 2 to try win7, lol.
I took vista off a machine the other day, and put xp back on. It's almost twice as fast now.
I wonder if win2k would still work.........
"Alarm bells rang for me when I heard the emphasis on a quick boot time."
I bet only essential services and processes will run on boot. As soon as you open an app, everything else that is needed will start up. If you need a quick boot time, buy a steady-state drive!
Or just don't your PC off.
Even simpler.

Errrm what are YOU on about???

A machine with a 32 bit processor (still most home PC's) cannot run any 64 bit apps or operating systems

You need a 64 bit processor - and no a dual core 32 bit does not equal a 64 bit if that's what your saying, is just 2 32 bit ones running off a single bus.

A 64 bit does just that, it handles 64 bits of binary in each cycle (thats why you have a processor speed of frequency)

Is 7 only for 64 bit machines then? Good job I've got me an AMD dual core 64 bit

Any one got a link to DL it from microsoft yet?? been looking for it, but I've got to go out soon, don't want to miss it, I've heard they will cap it at 2.5 million downloads.

Win 7 will support both 32 and 64 bit. Download from MS are only avaliable to technet and msdn members at the moment.

Me. Actually, I'd take an alpha build as well. I've never used a pre-alpha OS though, but that is just asking for trouble, really.

As for wanting a Beta of Windows 7 though, not really my thing. If I had a better computer I would though.

Well I know one thing... If and when I get my grubby little paws on a copy I'm pulling this hard drive out cos I like my current set up and doing a fresh install on a completely separate spare one I have lieing around... an old 20gig sea gate should suffice just to take it for a spin.

And I know a few of you will say why bother? you can dual boot it (or triple boot in my case)... My answer to that is I don't trust microsoft not to paint me into a corner somehow that requires me to shell out for the activation of windows 7 somewhere down the line!! No I'll go all around the houses me thinks
... And I did read somewhere that this release will only work as an upgrade from vista sp1?? any one else heard that?... Not really a prob, I try it starting from a form a formatted drive, but if I need to I will install vista first then the windows 7 after.... phew, actually that does seem like a fair old bit of work just to try it though...

Do some research. It is not an upgrade. It can be upgraded from Vista, but not from XP. Regardless people should do a clean install not an upgrade.

LOL, no i think thats not true.
I've been running the leaked out 32bit version for more than a week now and it came as a clean install.
Just wait a day or two, the official beta should be on M$ site today or tomorrow for anybody to download (for free
). Then we'll know for sure.

(Anyway, I've read through this topic and I think I haven't seen so much misinformation going on in one single ATS topic ever, LOL.)

I know...it's amazing how many people don't research before they spit such falsehoods.

And this should inform some of the people with questions or anyone who actually reads through the thread before spouting off nonsense:

> Windows 7 Beta 1 will be made available for a limited time during the day on January 9, 2009.

> Visit the Windows 7 page on Microsoft's website for the link.

> It will only be made available to the first 2.5 million people to download the code. Demand will be huge, so prepare to act quickly.

> Microsoft has not announced a specific time on Friday for the release, but we can expect it will be later in the day so the west coast of North America isn't left out.

> Windows 7 Beta 1 will be offered as an ISO image. It's around 2.5 or 3 gigabytes, so you will need a DVD burner if you want to install it.

> You will be required to register before downloading so Microsoft can give you a product key.

> It will be build 7000.

> The beta will only support Windows Vista SP1 to Windows 7 upgrades. If you're not running Vista SP1 right now, upgrade before you try to install the Windows 7 beta.

> There is also a clean install option for the Win7 beta.

> There is no upgrade path from XP.

> There's only one version of the beta, which Microsoft says "is roughly equivalent the Ultimate edition of Windows Vista."

> The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1. You will probably be forced to go back to using Vista SP1 on August 1 (or maybe upgrade to Win7 Beta 2?).

> English, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Hindi versions will be available Friday.

> Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions will be available (except for Hindi, which only gets a 32-bit version).

> If you're upgrading, remember to back up your PC. It's a beta, stupid!
