None the less, you are nieve to think if a super volcano blows that you will be able to get food, especially if you are near the ash zone! Everyone should be prepared for a natural or manmade disaster and have survival supplies of a few weeks to months!

I didn't say no one was going to die. I also gave you some very clear examples of how food can be grown inside buildings as well. I know plenty of *ahem* herbal enthusiasts who do this already. Crap, i was reading about some kid if cali who had over 100 pot plants in his momma's basement. Technology!

Why did I quote a movie, because it was relevant, somebody outside of the government figured out the problem and sounded the alarm!

In the movie, but movies are not real

That IS a good map. If there isn't any wind. Someone posted a fallout map earlier of measured ash fallout in the geologic record that has been measured.
Depends on the prevailing winds. From what I gather, the last major eruption put a considerable amount of ash on the ground as far east as Chicago, Illinois. (or what would later become Chicago)

Good luck growing plants with no sunlight, no water, No power to run those lights.

This in home growing is all very well and good, but what if the water is contaminated?

There is a cluster of earthquakes that have happen around the Greece and Turkey area. I mean there are quite a lot and they are all in between like 2.0 to 2.8.

This is completely going OT but OK! Firstly how is this volcanic event going to wipe out the water supply of the entire planet?

Oh my gosh, have you ever heard of contamination? If ash was to get into the water supply then it would be unsuitable to drink.

Wal-Mart will sell you a nice Brita filter for a reasonable sum.

And paste it in this thread.

Thanks

Exactly, but I wonder if the Brita filter can filter out volcanic ash.

WELL I, AS WELL AS OTHERS ARE KEPPING AN EYE ON YELLEOWSTONE.

BUT FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK CHRISTOPHER SANDERS IS AN ACTOR...
HE IS A REAL GEOLOGIST. CHECK IT OUT AT: SUSTAINABLEANGELS.COM

HE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN APPROVED FOR IT BUT, HE BELIEVES HE HAS A REASON FOR WORRY. NOTHING MAY HAPPEN, BUT AT LEAST HE CARES ENOUGH ABOUT PEOPLE TO SAY SOMETHING. I THINK THAT'S COOL!

IT'S NICE TO DO A LITTLE RESEARCH YOURSELF BEFORE YOU PUT OTHER PEOPLE DOWN.
I'M JUST SAYING......

ANYWAY .. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This man really seems ligitimate. I would definitely heed the warning. Why take chances. I live in so. cal so I am not worried but if I lived in the vicinity I would be packing my bags. People that wait til the last minute and then it is too late.

May I point you to this. Also for anyone else who may be interested.

BBC Horizon Supervolcano Information

The information is the same as stated in the documentary as is Professor Robert Smith, whos long term research with other geologists share the view of the said cycle.

Haven't read all 12 pages yet but will toss this in anyway. Apologies if its been posted..

As of today this map shows 273 earthquakes at Yellowstone over the past week

You can watch it live here..

More small quakes rattle Yellowstone National Park
5 hours ago

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — More earthquakes are rattling Yellowstone National Park.

The small quakes include three more Friday that measured stronger than magnitude 3.0. The University of Utah Seismic Stations say the strongest was 3.5.

Several hundred quakes centered under the northern end of Yellowstone Lake have now occurred since Dec. 26. No damage has been reported.

Earthquake swarms happen fairly often in Yellowstone. But scientists say its unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days.

Yellowstone lies mostly in northwestern Wyoming and is the caldera of a volcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago. Scientists have not concluded what is causing the earthquakes.

litte tid bit of info here on how the government issues warnings and the like. I am a meteorologist for the "government" (ok i work for the Navy... DONT HANG ME!) and i know that when it comes to hurricane warnings and watches, escpecially warnings, it costs boo-koos of dinero to issue and carry out warnings. something on the order of milions per mile of beach front... so they wait til the very last possible time to issue the warning because wasting millions of dollars on warnings and having a hurricane change course last minute leaving the warnings useless and the dollars wasted really ruins their day if you will. The guy that is telling people to evacuate may be a crack, but undeniable are the increase in "murmurs" from the area. interesting read nontheless.

oh and anyone ever hear of harry chapins song "the rock" lol good stuff and definately fits the topic here!

I know the Yellowstone Caldera is a completely different beast than Mt. St. Helens, but I would like to show the events leading up to its reactivation in 2004. This is many years after its initial May 18, 1980 eruption.

Mount St. Helens Eruption Chronology

Mt. St. Helens

September 24, 2004

About 200 small (less than magnitude 1) earthquakes are occurring at shallow depths (less than 1 kilometer, or 1/2 mile) at Mount St. Helens.

September 29, 2004 (Alert Level Two-Volcano Advisory)

Earthquakes are occurring at about four per minute. The largest events are approaching Magnitude 2.5 and they are becoming more frequent.

October 1, 2004

The increasingly energetic seismic swarm of the past week culminated in a small 25-miunute-long eruption around noon today from a vent just south of the lava dome. The eruption sent a steam and minor ash plume to an altitude of about 10,000 ft.

October 2, 2004 (Volcano Alert-Alert Level 3, "Code Red")

Alert level was changed to Volcano Alert Level 3 due to a change in the character of seismic signals (50-minute-long tremor) that occurred immediately after the small steam emission. Earthquakes are occurring at a rate of 1-2 per minute with maximum earthquake magnitudes of about M3.

When Yellowstone starts acting like this, then beware. Magma is coming. Then again we don't really know how a Super Caldera erupts.
