YML is working, but YMV, YSB, YPK, YLA, YTP, and YLA all have been
down for a week now. And now today YHB, YHH, YPP, YWB, and
MCID are showing some noise or calibration? pulses. Looks real
funny on GEE. I wondered if a cable got hit during the spring clean
up. Hope the whole network doesn't go down.

I am no expert but the weather today in the park is poor, there is a winter storm warning in effect -and Winds are from the West at 9.2 gusting to 18.4 MPH (8 gusting to 16 KT). The pressure is 995.8 mb and the humidity is 89%. The wind chill is 23. Last Updated on Mar 30 2010, 9:56 am MDT.

There is also an Avalanche warning in effect
THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS TRANSMITTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE BRIDGER-TETON NATIONAL FOREST AVALANCHE CENTER.

AN AVALANCHE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM TODAY THROUGH 9 PM WEDNESDAY.

HEAVY SNOWFALL AND STRONG WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH A MAJOR STORM SYSTEM WILL RAPIDLY INCREASE THE AVALANCHE HAZARD IN THE MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN WYOMING. NATURAL AND HUMAN TRIGGERED AVALANCHES ARE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN THE BACKCOUNTRY. TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN IS NOT RECOMMENDED. AVALANCHES MAY IMPACT ROADWAYS ON TETON PASS... IN HOBACK CANYON AND IN THE SNAKE RIVER CANYON.

Relax. A bank of the WY network stations is having some real trouble right now. In fact, there are several seismic networks experiencing difficulty at the moment. Nothing is happening in YS at the moment. I am watching the PB network there, and all is cool. Some of the other WY network stations are still working.

I don't like the look of YHB and YWB and others. Watching them
in GEE, they look like the others that failed a week ago.

By the way I converted YMP from 8:00 to 15:00 UTC, to audio
and to me it sounds like wind. I submitted a 60 second sample
but after an hour it still hasn't completed the upload. Has anyone
else had problems uploading sound to ATS?

Is this the beginning of a new swarm of earthquakes? look at the page:

It can take a seriously long time to upload large files. I have found that the files produced in Quake Data are considerably smaller that files the have been through Audacity. I don't know why that is but it seems to make them much larger.

What you can do is to cut the bits in between to shorten the sounds for upload.

Side by side view of YMR/YMP

There seems to have been a transmission problem generally around 18:00 UTC with some flat-lining of the traces. The rest looks like wind.

The Old Faithful cam seems to me to have looked grey and uninviting like this all day long.

The 2.3 and 2.7 today - just how close together is that!!

I'm a little skeptical about the 2.3.

They occured one second apart and the 2.3 was the only one there up until this afternoon and has yet to be review by a seismologist, yet the 2.7 was just plotted this afternoon and has been reviewed. Maybe it was a revision and they didn't remove the 2.3?

I tried two uploads, one was 10 megabytes and the other 8 meg.
The upload page seems different to me. There was no submit
button only an upload button in the screen that lets you browse for
the file to upload. I waited a few hours and then logged in and
tried it again with the same results.

One of the files I entitled "Quake Echos" It was of the Sequence
of quakes on B208 on the 28th, which you mentioned above. I
listened to the audio from B205, B206, B207, B208 and B944,
just to convince myself it was real quakes and not something to
do with the ice. On B208 it is extremely interesting with a loud
sequence of quakes followed later by low amplitude versions
of the same sort of sequence, like echos. The important part
only takes a minute and 30 seconds sampled at 2000 Hz.

Since I can't seem to upload, perhaps you could convert it
and put it up for others to listen to. When I first heard it, I
thought for sure it happened in the ice and I was hearing echos
as the sound traveled across the lake through the ice, hit the
far shores and reflected back again. The fact that it showed up
on most of the instruments in the park kind of rules that out.

Edit: Sorry it was the 28th not the 27th

I will tell you something even more odd. The 2.3 has the identical ID to an earthquake in the park that happened on 29th December 2008.

The reason I know that is because it was flagged as a revision in Quake Data but when I looked at the revision it was this old one.

I have flagged this with Jake Lowenstern and will report back if I get a reply.

Seems like it's some glitch then.

Really odd.

But, things have been a little odd today.

Cue people freaking out over a single solitary event nowhere near previous swarm sites.

And it WAS shown in red, if you saw it within the hour.

Freaking out? No I don't think so, but before we depart the subject I would just remind everyone of this post.

Now unless I am much mistaken ( and I usually am not
) these either 1 or maybe 2 quakes are just exactly in that area.

Yes probably a glitch, but I assume those IDs are supposed to be unique, and if that is the case they have a ferral quake running around the database

True but it is fairly close to the fracture zone and I think this is what they were referring to. This runs SW/NE as far as I can tell.

As you say 2 quakes do not a swarm make, it was just interesting that they were that far over as we do not normally see them over there.

Well perhaps I should not be replying to myself.

OK, first the 'duplicate' ID. This can happen because occasionally the databases have to be rebuilt - and this information resides on two different systems - and when that happens it is possible for the indexes to repeat. This is a problem that I can equate with since databases are my bag! I shall dream up some cross checking for Quake Data to try and avoid this in the future.

Secondly with regard to the failure of instruments in the Park this is apparently due to a relay problem outside the Park and we have to live with it for the time being. They are working on it, but there is no resolution date at present, however you may rest assured that the YVO is happy that there are sufficient instruments operational not to cause them any problems.

They will still be able to tell us if she is going to blow!

New version of QuakeData tomorrow

Link to QuakeWatch with some bedtime reading while you wait for the next QuakeData release!
