There is nothing to suggest that Yellowstone will erupt in the near future. There will be warning signs which you'll hear about on the news because every news outlet would carry an alert change at the YVO. As you live in Southern Ontario, you would not neccesarily have to worry about blast. You would have an ashfall which is difficult but not completely catastrophic. Be a boy scout and always be prepared and you won't be so nervous. Create a safety bag with water, batteries, medical supplies and keep it for any disaster. In your area, it's much more likely you will face an ice storm and loss of power. If you prepare for that, you'll be prepared for anything and you will feel empowered. Get your parents involved and you set the plan and make the list of supplies you need. If you're prepared for a storm, it's great, like a hardcore camping trip. If you don't have the essentials, it's miserable. So don't worry. Plan, Act and then forget, and go have fun and enjoy your youth. Don't waste the best years of your life worrying.

sorry double post.

www.youtube.com...

2012 is just a movie. And IMO I think it's just the end of a calender. Like Dec 31. After the last day on the calender, you just start counting again. I don't think Yellowstone will erupt in 2012. In fact, I will have to agree with the experts that suggest that the swarm may have relieved pressure, making an immediate eruption less likely. Go take some years and forget about his and in a few years come back and find me, when you do, I'll tell you when there's a danger and what to look out for. We got some time. So go sow some wild oats and play safe.

Dear omg,

I do not believe that you have anything to worry about. The scientists in charge of Yellowstone say there is a very slim chance that Yellowstone will have a major eruption within the next 10,000 years. The scientists in charge say that they believe the next eruptions at Yellowstone will be small event that will be contained within the Yellowstone Park. Living in Canada, you have north winds which will help to blow the ash away from you regardless of what sort of eruption Yellowstone decides to have. We here like to follow Yellowstone so that if in fact there is something for people to start worrying about we will help to spread the word. We write and debate theory's about what is going on in Yellowstone and sometimes discuss worse case situations. Adults as well as children tend to dramatize things. Please do not let us here scare you, we are here to help if need be.

Take care and worry about your homework so you can become more educated and maybe some day help other people with your wisdom. Also, as Robin advises be prepared at all times for anything that may happen - eruption, snow storm, earthquake.

To both Ann marie and Robin, wonderful replies to the 14 year old, don't be afraid get more educated like they say, then , you will have no need to be necessarily afraid.

You clicked a link and saw something alarming , however this is a very long running thread, mostly unsensationalist and educated - learn hopefully.

Sorry to anyone clicking on - I have nothing of scientific to add to this, i just enjoy the educators - you know who you are !

I wonder if it could be said this is still part of this year's swarm-

www.isthisthingon.org...

www.isthisthingon.org...

It just seems like there were just a few quiet days. It's hard to believe the ice is still affecting the Lake's readings-

waterdata.usgs.gov...

I haven't seen any news that shows a lot of record lows.

They have not officially stated the swarm is over. here's the update from yesterday volcanoes.usgs.gov... - They have now name the swarm the Madison Plateau Swarm.

Things picked up today - I am still not liking the fact that very little went on today around the earth after the Chile quake - Not to scare anyone, just a note to self - things are deciding what they want to do next....

They are still to issue the February 2010 update.

I actually looked at the ICE gage again just before your post. Thought the same thing. While I get that a lake can freeze - discharge - as in moving water from the mountains while not much melting snow pack, I still have a hard time with. And - as far as the gage being frozen - I don't buy it - this is a lake, which uplift and all sorts of things are going on - They would be all over these measurements -- I hate when They don't share - and, They don't share so well some times :-(

My sincere apologies for this slightly off topic post but I am trying to direct the discussion with David Berger [RussianScientists] away from this thread.

I have responded in the QuakeWatch 2010 thread now and any continuation of this discussion should take place there.

Hi pantangele,

You must have missed the first video, #1 it tells about the pressure. You watched the 2nd or 3rd video on the pressure cycle. Every earthquake starts off as an earthquake cell, and each earthquake cell starts off with precursor piezoseismic detection of 15 minutes the first day, and so on, as I describe in the videos.

You are correct that I do leave a lot of gaps in the videos and I don't go into to much detail. I simply leap over stuff because they are old stuff to me. I actually stood in front of the camera on two different days for about an hour each time, just bringing stuff up impromptu from my mind.

why did you edit your post to take out your original reply to take your eq data/discussion to the quake thread as puterman asked???

Please stay on topic or move your posts to the proper thread as highly requested here all day.

I watched some of your video's maybe I will watch the rest - idk - if you can't even respect a simple basic rule why would I even bother to spend and hour or so trying to descifer what you are saying through the wind.

I must agree with you Anmarie96 that the Yellowstone earthquake swarm is not over yet, but Puterman seems to think its over.

With regard to the current swarm at Yellowstone I made NO such assertion.

Please point out the post where you consider that I did.

I am not so sure that it is quiet. See this post I made on Quake Watch 2010 a short while ago.

I think the automatic data stopped for several hours and then restarted and the y have not filled it back in yet manually. There simply cannot have been no quakes in the world between those times!

In the last day or so, I have been experiencing terrible network problems with GEE. It is lagging some 15 minutes behind realtime, and the data is not coming in anywhere near as fast as it usually does. In fact, it is getting backed up to the point that it can't recover fast enough, so I am often having to shut it down and restart. I don't know if it's just sheer server strain or what.

And even clearing my routing tables has not helped (which sometimes it can), so the problem appears to be in the network somewhere.

Actually, scratch that, clearing my routing tables this time DID help, once I was able to get back into GEE.

I am curious. Why do we worry if the quakes do not move North? I got the impression from Mike and others that we should worry if they do. I am confused.

I see no sign of them moving north yet, but I am keeping a very close watch on that area and Chaiten.

Sorry there. I did make an answer before, but now I realized which of my posts you was referring to. I can see now that my answer was clumsy to say it least.

The biggest concern for me right now is that this quakes might migrate up "north".
What I meant to say was that I was worried that the 8.8 quake and all the aftershocks would generate so much stress further up north on the Nazca Plate that we might get another big one, further up north. I was thinking that several "smaller" ones, traveling north along the fault would be better since they obviously would release build up stress along the way.

As I have understood, we are here talking about a 10 meter slip? That has to make stress other places. Don't you think?

Anyway, I'll continue the Chile quake in the proper thread. It's a bit out of topic here now.

I have been having prolems with GEE as well for the past few days. Today I am getting "Server unavailable, please try again later" The other day I got "Server Bug on our end"

I just re - read the USGS press release - which maybe I read wrong the other day. That is the February update. According to the update in case anyone else missed it - ? - There was a second small swarm NE of West Yellowstone Mountain.

here is my favorite quote about fear omg. Hope it helps you. It has saved my life once.

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
