Hi, I have noticed this before and wondered what it was. I think
it may have been discussed before. So today I did some checking. All times are GMT.
It generally occurs a little earlier, sometimes as early as 2:00.
There seems to be no specific schedule, but roughly every other day.

Sometimes it occurs around 17:00 hours like last Jan. 6 and 8,
possibly Feb. 3, and today at 16:40. The signature is different.
Jan. 14 at 21:38 is another one with slow builtup and decay.
They could be from an entirely different cause.

It looks like it comes and goes by B208 in one direction, and
then comes back and goes by in the other direction. It takes
around 30 minutes to complete the cycle. I went back to last
year and did some random checking. The earliest I could find it
was on Dec. 24, 2009. No sign of it in the summer months.
It showed up Jan. 1,5,6,7,8,1117,24,26,31,
Feb. 2,3,5,7,9,12,14,16,17,19,22,26,28,Mar. 2, and today.

So based on the above and the fact that they were supposed to get some snow yesterday in the Park, I think it is some kind
of snow equipment. However looking at the web cams it doesn't
look like there is much snow around. So I am going to watch
and see if it goes away after a while. Does anyone on this thread
live up there near the lake? Maybe they could check it out.

I can't get the sounds unless someone can tell me if the times are UTC or local. I suspect these are a variation of the pipecleaners but if I can listen to them I should be able to tell.

UTC from what i remember last night. Anmarie is pretty good about that from all i have read.

Probably a reaction from the 6.3 in Chile.

Yes, I have just seen. : D It's all a mystery, 4 Attached magnitude 6 + earthquakes in different parts of the world.

6.4 - TAIWAN
6.1 - CHILE
6.4 - VANUATU
6.3 - ANTOFAGASTA (This was not an aftershock, since it is not in the vicinity of the epicenter from the 8.8 Quake)

I found a real helpful tool for trying to figure out what we see at
yellowstone. If you go to the USGS list here
earthquake.usgs.gov...

Then click on the date/time of a large earthquake.
Then click on the Scientific & Technical tab and go down to
Theoretical P-Wave Travel Times and click on it. You get a neat
world map showing what time the P wave wiil arrive. So here is
the one for the 6.1 Chile quake at 01:59:51 GMT this morning.
neic.usgs.gov...

It only took 12 minutes 35 seconds, and I happened to be watching
GEE at the time and sure enough most of the instruments I was
watching showed it.

AS to the title of this thread....
nothing
Nothing is going on at Yellowstone.
But... come back in October.

I find it very interesting how this last 6.3 showed up so strongly yet the other 6 mag quakes didn't. It goes to show how much the 'shadow' comes into play and how the quakes DO have an affect on Yellowstone, depending on where they originate from.

Oh sorry about that - I got carried away with the plates - It's hard for me to read to see through all those squiggly lines. Appears to be March 3 - 9:18 pm gmt through 10:03 pm gmt with a peak around 9:44 pm gmt and again at around March 4 - 9:38 a.m. gmt throgh 10:04 a.m. gmt with a peak around 9:43 a.m. gmt. --- did you need that in a different time zone?

[edit on 4-3-2010 by Anmarie96] wait, now that i look at the conversion - = 12 hours apart - times are yellowstone local time

So is that 8 hours behind us (GMT/Zulu/UTC)

I was not worried about the times of the signal as I will collect time before and after.

It's OK got your response on QuakeWatch.

Dear Lildrummer boy - there is never nothing going on at Yellowstone :-) - Just ask Old Faithful, She'll be the first to tell you - on a schedule no less
:-) .

I say that with the utmost respect of course.

I have been lurking since page one and have read every page. Well done. I celebrated at page 500! I have not contributed because my background is in psychology, not earth sciences and I did not want to interrupt such a great chain of thought. Watching you all think together has been an enjoyable education.

But I do have one question. I apologize if it is something everybody here knows and I do not.

Has there not been invented a computer program which would be able to show visually in three dimensions, recent movement of all tectonic plates using recent data, and how the variables influence each other? I am thinking that if one used the following readily available variables, a program should be possible.

Time
Position
Force
Depth
Direction (is this the problem?)

I know that everyone knows which direction the plates move. I mean something more refined. Showing the amount of recent pressure at given points combined with direction is what I am getting at.

Thank you for such an enjoyable experience. I too miss Shirakawa.

Hello there, You would think, wouldn't you!!! Don't they have robots on Mars doing such things? - Sorry - I am certainly not the one to ask on such programs as I am not the computer programmer, software developer, great with math or calculations on a scientific level, etc - Hopefully some one else here will answer you on that -- I just read the data and comprehend. I especially like maps, graph, diagrams - - visuals.

I understand what you are saying as I have asked those same things to myself - - I know there is a whole lot of information the We do not have - They do not like to share so well, although They are getting a little better +/- -.

I will give you a good example of my thinking here - we have been throwing around the lake for quiet some time - what is going on there? - well, I have this to say to all this and was waiting for the opportunity to put this out (thank you).

It took many years for Them to give a whole big scientific report of the bottom of the Lake like this was such a big hard ordeal. Then, We hear nothing more from Them on what is going on at the bottom of the lake and the ups and downs and all that is going on down there. Like this is all such technical stuff which should be so difficult - all for measurements - -

All I know, if I want to go fishing on any lake, I can buy this little devise, that = wow, low and behold tells me were the bottom of the lake is, where the fish are --- what low spot - watch out for that sand bar your lines gonna get snagged. - three dimensional - water temp, water direction - geez - if I jumped in it would most likely sound out a warning for an unknown object --- and zoom in and show a picture of me --

What I'm getting at here - If They can sell such object at a simple fishing store (oh wait - highly expensive, long processing item for data for reports) - What else do They have?

Sorry for the long wind, I believe there is much more out there and We have not been given the information , as I have said before - They do not share so well.

With regard to the 3 D model, one thing comes to mind that might
be presently missing. That is under water GPS. To be able to see
the plates or parts of plates that are under water and how much
they are moving.

Just a thought.

Replying to you in QuakeWatch 2010 as this question really belongs there as it is not specifically Yellowstone.

Here is the link to the reply

Addendum:

Pipecleaner sounds at Yellowstone again?

Maybe not. Compare these two (links to quakewatch 2010)
Sound from B208.PB.063
Pipe cleaner link in QW2010

Here is the second sound. This is at a faster sample rate

We have more unusual movements on most all seismo's around the park today - different from yesterday - at around 5:30 & 10:30 a.m. park local time. - shown UTC on the following link

www.iris.edu...

What ever it is, it cut out LKWY again.

Something IS going on at the Lake!!!! And - if you haven't listened to the Lake sing, you should - it's incredible.
