Nobody is faking the web cam. Geeze, I think that's a little excessive, don't you?

I mean, they'd have to be faking A LOT, because they are still telling people to come to the park, people are still uploading pictures daily:
www.flickr.com...
and Twittering about going to Yellowstone, and writing little community papers about yellowstone

www.yellowstone-online.com...

and...we're talking about something that would effect several neighboring states. There's just no way.

There have been some earthquake swarms, there might be more. We may or may not get all that data as soon as it is ready, but if there were something actively erupting out of the park, believe me we'd know.

Uhh, let me get this straight. I am looking at the ATS thread on Yellowstone, right? Conspiracy site, right? And the data in re Yellowstone has been flaky since FEMA stepped in, right? Uhh, the web cam live feed could be faked.

You are looking at the Yellowstone thread on ATS in the SCIENCE section, not the delusional paranoid section.

Does your license plate say, "IMNUTS?"

Seriously, there is a very real effort by many to evaluate the events empirically. It's sad really that you would derail an otherwise informative thread. I'm a civilian who wandered here after doing a Google blog search when I read about the swarm in the mainstream press. I'm a grounded, rational guy who is probably more prone to entertain a conspiracy theory than most, but you... You give sites like this a bad name and are why people like me eventually roll their eyes and leave.

Search for Flying Spaghetti Monster. Essentially your ravings are like anything that cannot be disproved, but rely entirely on faith and cherry picking data to fit your theory.

Just relax and let the sane people here drive... If you're incapable of forming intelligent conclusions that are at least on the same planet as Scientific Method, then at let those who are more effective take the wheel.

You're really an embarrassment.

Signed,
FEMA

Did anyone else see this M4.2 off Wash/BC coast?
Canada is like a Blackhole on Eq info...being as it's so close to YS think I'll keep more of an eye on it since it's data doesn't show up most anywhere else...the hand bones connected to the arm bone...

Here is an interesting link. It is a link to the ashfall from the last eruption.

Yeah, and I really hate that. I live in WA so it would be nice to know what is happening in BC. Why is that?

I think you're right about that.

What I see seems to indicate that typical accelerometers are only good for measuring larger events (>3.5).

I see one reference:

seismologie.oma.be...

Where they talk about setting up a network of both seismometers and accelerometer stations so that they can record the higher magnitude events with the accelerometer stations when the amplitude gets high enough to saturate the seismometers.

That seems like a good plan.

The MEMS type accelerometers I'm seeing seem to have a low-end sensitivity of about 0.001 G. That may not be nearly good enough.

Looking at the data from ION Geo, their geophone elements mostly seem to have a sensitivity of 28.8 V/m/s. That's pretty high, so it'd be easy to amplify and record even pretty small events.

And looking at that, and seeing that they're specified in V/m/s slapped me in the face with the obvious: Accelerometers give you the first derivative of that - acceleration - as opposed to a signal directly proportional to velocity.

In any case, surplus geophones might be a great way to go for a home-brew seismograph, but an accelerometer based unit would be fun, at least for large events.

Here's Parallax's take on a simple to build, accelerometer-based seismograph project:

www.parallax.com...

None of this would be calibrated or of much "real" use, but it'd just be fun to play with, I guess.

I really don't know...USGS has pages with info about ~M2.5+ events from other countrys...but noooooo not Canada. With all this Activity between Alaska/West Coast/YS...it'd be nice to see it all in on place instead of having to snoop around fer it...events up there have effects here too, ya knowwwwwww

So Yellowstone had a 2.5 tonight and a 1.1 earlier. As reported on the USGS website. I wouldn't buy a house around there.

hhhmmm scarey thought...notice the latest YS map...01-13-09 11:50EST...notice how the Quakes are spreadout...towards the edges now...NE/SE/W...hope this isn't a trend leaning toward the rim areas of the Caldera...know what that would imply don't ya????

Dangest thing about that M2.5...no nuttin' before
(at least you can see at that resolution)...no tremors/harmonics nuttin' just a clean SNAP...like a chickens neck bone

Notice also besides larger value...the strike time...it shows up there before it registers on the other recorders...that would inform me of position more than just amplitude...

Spike near TA.H17A at 05:55 UTC.

Doesn't show up at the other stations I'm monitoring, but it does seem to be shaped like a quake. Probably a micro quake.

Edited to add: you can see it at YLT, but smaller.

[edit on 14-1-2009 by quakewatcher]

another one: 06:10 UTC, this one's definitely bigger but still v. small. I wish we had a webicorder for TA.H17A, it's very close to YLT but shows some interesting things right now.

There is another expert also warning about Yellowstone, and his warning is even more dire than Christopher Sanders, the gas company geologist in Wyoming that posted a web warning last week telling people to get out of the Yellowstone area. The other source is "RobinUC". I don't know his real name but he has a YouTube channel and he studies extinction events. He has developed his own compelling theory about how the supervolcano is setting up for a major eruption, even worse than originally predicted. I wrote to "RobinUC" asking for a more specific lead time of the eruption event. I asked do we have days, weeks or years until an eruption? Here is the text of his reply to me:
"Hello and thanks for your interest. I've been really busy lately. You asked a question. When. Soon, real soon. No more than 5 years if were lucky. It could have happened already. The faults are all intersecting in the position that will cause the chain reaction.

It could erupt at anytime within the next year.

Do all you can to promote this. I know the answer. It's all math, geology, physics and geography. I have the proof. But people are missing it. I know the precise location where the eruption will start. A 20 km strip from the north of the lake to the Sour creek dome. It could breach at any minute. And I have the proof that the chain reaction is prime and waiting for something to pull the lever, just like in a game called mousetrap. Nothing religious about me. But I know where the gates of hell are and i've found the staircase down to hell. Once the water decends those stairs. the gates will fly open and hell will be upon the earth. I'm not a religious man. I mean this literallly." --RobinUC
I noticed on "RobinUC"s comments section of his YouTube channel page one of his subscribers said he had knowledge that, "the government is watching you and Chris" [Sanders]. I didn't think much of this at first - maybe the guy is just paranoid. But, when I went back to Chris Sanders' warning webpage to see if he had posted any updates, THE WEB PAGE HAD DISAPPEARED! Only the parent organization web page is there (Worldwidewaterplan), with no mention of the Yellowstone alarm. Coincedence? Government forced him to delete it? I'm going to try to contact Chris Sanders to try and find out. I'll let you know if I get more information.

Not good! I have been fascinated by this part of the world for awhile!
Have been wanting to bring this up for everyone. This is part of the "ring of fire" that rings the pacific ocean. Most know this probably, but some do not know this area is very similar to yellowstone. Just wanted to add that!
Here is a link or two:www.pbs.org...
www.kamchatka.org.ru...

P.S. Beautiful country! I have some of these pics as my screensavers!

Wanted to post this theory again! This is good news if true!
CSU researcher says yellowstone caldera may be detached from magma source. Also, data has been shown that this is a "cool" volcano. I hope this is a signal the worst eruptions here are over. Anything is possible I know, but maybe it wouldnt be as bad as its been in past eruptions.
