Depending on the spectrum used to capture any given image, and on the false-colors used in the final output, you could end up not seeing snow displayed as anything we'd recognize as snow.

It'd be good to have more information for each frame to be better able to analyze what we're seeing. But the main thing is that what we see isn't always obvious in these satellite images.

I would say VX-7R is thinking along the same thoughts I as I am, if the image is a composite of radar and thermal imaging snow won't show up. Radar will pass through snow because it's not as dense as the lake waters are.

I could be wrong, but it seems to match the visual data.

My wife works with a few notable P.E.'s who specialize in real-time remote AQM sites within the State of Texas. I'll ask them for their help for a better and/or more authoritative response.

In addition to the site AQM, there is also a lake pH and alkalinity analysis station with - it appears - real time data available.

At this time, I'm just searching...

Anybody care to help hunt? I don't know if anything is down this rabbit hole, but I'm gonna look.

Well I'm guessing that the lighter, almost white at the highest points is snow but why not in the nooks and crannies and why not on and around the lake.

Here are some interesting sites on Lake Yellowstone alkalinity, don't know if you've already read thru these.

www.nps.gov...

pubs.usgs.gov...

www.sciencedirect.com... 1&_urlVersion=0&_userid=10&md5=80de7a481a1bd04f8f966a6e25bf33d3

They aren't real time data, but I hope they help point you in the direction you're looking to go.

This is a screen print of that satellite photo that was freaking me out. All the subsequent links to satellite images posted by other people after me did not take me to the same website or images. The highlighted shot is dated 12/12/08. All of the other shots around it are from different dates and have the "pink" I saw referenced in a couple posts.

Awesome job getting that on here, I could not figure out how to do it.
It freaked me out, when I saw it too.

Can anyone explain, why the red like that?

Moshpet managed to get an even better one posted on the previous page - there has been some back and forth on the colors. I'm not convinced.

Good news all!
The Mt. Washburn webcam is back online!
Since it is pointed at the Yellowstone Caldera, you can bet I'll be looking at it tomorrow when there is light

www.nps.gov...

That's the direct linky

So we'll be able to answer a few questions by using our eyes

I just went back and read what I had missed, one thing, as you mentioned, look at the red - it seems there is melt around them, not much snow.

I was watching the "old faithful" cam today, lots of bison there, it made me feel better (animals being around there), I was looking at everything I could with it.

The snow was melted around the area, but that would be due to the steam.
I was looking at the mountain sides and saw snow, pretty much everywhere.

People were out walking around there, looking at the bison.

If you go back to the 80's info, when Yellowstone acted up then. It says, that the soles of shoes melted from the ground being so hot.

In the cam, I didn't see anyone reacting to a hot ground either - nor were the bisons.

OH, I do have to say one thing - when all this going on, but it seems some odd stuff is happening around the U.S. with people.

I know around here - there has been an epidemic it seems......

People are having huge headaches (my head has been killing me, along with my ears) and dizziness around this area. They think it is a type of "flu" - that is an odd flu. I don't get headaches at all normally, but I have been having almost constant ones for a few weeks.

I know with all the stuff at yellowstone, my question is: could all the things that have been happening - be from our magnetic core shiftiing or something?

Think the costume shop was all out of monkey suits and he got stuck with a bison suit. He's subsequently been accepted into the herd and has lead then to hang out around the webcam.

Been off for awhile -

Has anybody noticed the water output from the lake.

It is way up all of a sudden.

That could be from the amount of rain and snow they got, and it is the natural melt off the mountains etc.

I know when I was studying water tables last month, I could never say much about it, unless I could research the history of each place and what amounts occured after there was rain or snowfall.

Unless we can have a history based on the amount they received there, I don't think we can determine anything with that info.

That is just my opinion, but I wouldn't put much into the water table there right now - there has been an unusual amount of percipertation in the area.

To quickly check this possibility just go here waterdata.usgs.gov... and here waterdata.usgs.gov... .
If it was precipitation you would see a rise in these rivers also

Not entirely sure I have much faith in the webcams. Not until someone pops up in front of it holding up a newspaper with today's date anyway. Sorry - conspiracy theory again.

You are SO RIGHT I looked at all the data, what is also interesting is the lowering of water on the 6th at Madison River waterdata.usgs.gov...

a big drop in one day.

The lake has gone up tremendously.

I take back my last post! Good find!!

I understand, and I guess you are right, especially if something is going on there, they would have video "as a normal day". hhmmmm I am going to have to revisit it tomorrow. I have been watching it - I will only know if it is the actual day and time, if there is a shake (earthquake) at the same time one happens there.

Here's the same graph with linear scale instead of logarithmic:

For what reason would Yellowstone Lake discharge ONLY increase by almost 10%, while other rivers in the same basin remain the same in the last 24 hours?
