Jackson Hole elk migration habits have changed this year due in part to good forage, light snowfall and a new hunt on the south end of the National Elk Refuge, biologists say.
By Dec. 18, wildlife managers counted 3,600 elk on the south end of the refuge, and 70 percent of radio-collared elk likely to winter on the refuge had arrived.
That’s compared with last year, the first year of the south unit hunt, when 4,500 elk and 85 percent to 90 percent of radio-collared elk had arrived by mid-December.
And then from 2004 to 2006 the central caldera floor rose faster than ever, springing up nearly 7 inches during the three-year span.
What the researchers think is happening, on a short-term basis at least, is that the bulging Yellowstone hotspot north of the Tetons is pushing against the north edge of Jackson Hole and jamming it against the mountains. (This is also causing the southwest part of the Yellowstone plateau, under the hotspot, to slide downhill at a rate of one-sixth of an inch each year.).

I too have noticed my compasses not indicating proper north, especially over the last 3 days. Tho I was not sure to mention it when I proposed my theory of something outside is causing the geological activity because I did not have enough information yet to know for sure. But now with compass manipulation confirmation by another member, it raises more suspecion that something is making the magnetic field "shift" in some manner, and that can cuase the geological activity we are seeing, but there has to be something causing the shifting, that leads me to the outside influence theory.
To add..has anyone else noticed that unusually very bright star in the early evening that hangs at about the 2 o-clock position? Of course it will appear at a different position depending on where you are located, but here in Casper Wy, that bright star is prominent and clearly much much brighter than the other stars that show up in the evening.
