True. I almost clicked away last week when I saw the name of the site, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the hard work, good analysis and intelligence displayed amongst the ravings. Now that we're in a lull and I for one am still interested to see if there's something still brewing, we're getting the full force crazies who it would at least seem are routing for the end -- or who just care more about being right about cataclysm that Science. It's not too much different than Narcissism, Magical Thinking or other Psychological disorders to think that you must be present and aware for something epic to happen. I truly think it bugs some here that this may happen over thousands of years on nature's time and not on their time. For those of you, and many are just young and foolish, relax and calm down! Once again, not everything is a conspiracy and not everything will be or must be pieced together by you, or according to a pat, neat little conclusion that you have solved.

Let's get some real data and continue to analyze it as it comes and not make this thread an embarrassment after having amassed so much good content.

"Scientists have been monitoring the activity at Yellowstone and do not believe an eru"

All kidding aside, this short thread has quite a few links if you're looking for data.

Oh wow, I am watching the live cam at OF and their is a wolf "poking" around. Seems pretty calm though, just "checking" things out.

Is it possible to calculate Magnitude of EQ from data that GEE (real time viewer) gives?

That was cool, but now he went over the side and into the trees.
They were following it around the whole time.

The threat of quakes doesn't seem to keep the tourists away. (Old Faithful Live Webcam screenshot, 01/04/09 around 11:30 AM local time.)

Here's an animation of several screenshots:

I keep finding it strange that USGS doesn't update that Yellowstone activity site.
Another strange thing:

www.seis.utah.edu...

The Lake Mary seismograph keeps on showing these unusual movements for the last hour.

I think we can all agree, none of us wants to die prematurely, (if ever)especially from this thing! May our grandchildrens children be able to see these same wonders. Amen.

Does anyone else see something on the Pacific Coast coming soon?

And when it does, it's going to re-activate Yellowstone for another round or swarms or something else?

On the whole "is this normal?" thing...

It has been stated over and over again, in this thread through research, and by officials working on this, that this event is not usual.

Yes, there have been EQ swarms before, they have been measured, well documented and studied.

The difference here is the sheer number and their close proximity to one area.

That is why this event is being watched closely and why it isn't being fobbed off as "just another EQ swarm at Yellowstone".

Nothing about this is predictable. Therefore, any EQ swarm, regardless of size and scale, will be note worthy. That's what UofU Seismology and USGS live and work for. The fact that this is happening (or has happened, if it is now over) to such an unusual degree just makes it even more worthy of monitoring because it offers new information and experience.

There are a few other things to contemplate here;
We have never witnessed an eruption at Yellowstone. And every volcano has its own personality, its own signature marks, its own method of sending messages for translation.
While one geologist or vulcanologist may say a harmonic signal will indicate an imminent eruption, another team will have discovered another location where the rules of this did not apply.
We have never seen a large Hydrothermal explosion, though we know many have happened at YS since the last eruption. We do not know what the signs would be before this event.
Again, one person may suggest a harmonic signature would be present, another may suggest that it wouldn't have to be.

We know far too little about this to be able to suggest that it most definitely is a warning of an eruption, and we know little to suggest that it isn't.

All we can do is look at the data, try our best to understand it as laymen, listen to what the vastly more experienced professionals are saying and form our own conclusions.

Going over the same discussion again and again in an effort to enforce our "end of days" or (adversely) "there's nothing to worry about" view on others is a waste of time. Especially when most of us really know squat about it.

A lot of people have worked hard in this thread to bring evidence and develop some actual understanding of the situation. We've managed to keep away from either the doom or salvation mindset while doing this, so it is a little insulting to see people post basic statements to either effect while ignoring the actual facts already presented and ideas discussed.

Just my take on it, I'm sure others might disagree.

/lecture

So, it looks like we're having a dry spell on the activity. Perhaps this is a good time for them to catch up on data. I'll keep looking around for some more official statements or reports on what has happened so far.
I'd expect they'd use this time to process a lot of data to get a better immediate understanding of what has happened/is happening under the lake. And maybe that will mean a few press statements to related publications and partner organisations.

I think I'll spend some more time looking at the water outflow data too, it's something I've neglected in the discussion.

A few minutes ago the camera was following a fox and then a wolf. It was really interesting. They didn't seem concerned about anything. Alot of people are there too. At one point the camera did a really close up shot of a man, talking on his cell, and a woman...both then waved wildly at the camera. Do you think some undergrad at Utah is running the camera remotely and that was Mom and Dad?

Was just watching the web cam as OF went off. One guy was posing for his friend to take a photo from an angle that it made it look like OF was coming out his rear.

I guess the tourists aren't too worried.

I was looking at the water outflow data a couple of hours ago and everything seemed to be on par.

Quality was right smack dab in the middle of the mean. Doesn't look like anything is leaking out yet. Air quality appeared normal also.

Good one!
But you might be scaring those without a sense of Humor.
During this lull and for the benefit of ourselves and any newbies that come in,
it is a good time to collect the things we have agreed upon with in this long thread.

Two things up front.

1. No one wants to even discuss 'Wind' in conjunction with monitors.
We know it is not so please do not go there.
2. There is a large number of us who know/feel strongly about that the various volcanos and EQ's are related to some extent as proven by repeated statements by the well posted Prof Smith. (yes, poor guy)
Now for # 3 :
The Conspiracy goes mostly in part to Government agencies watching and in charge who some believe are not very forth coming with info, or untrustworthy.

With this Thread being so active and so many people out here watching what we can of info and them, It leaves very little wiggle room for them.
If this tread were not here and we the general public were not so curious they could get away with what ever they wanted if they chose to. We know Governs and Bodies have not been truthful before. Sadly, even ours. That is not a conspiracy but a sad fact.

Conspiracy thoughts pops up when we do not get the answers we want fast enough or have unresolved questions.

There has been a lot of documented good evidence of history and events along with fears and misconceptions.

Without this wide swing and an open mind we can not discern and learn anything.
I praise this thread for all its good , bad and indifferent.

Respectfully to all,
Mushussu

Understood.

There have been several attempts to divide the conversations about this event as they fall in to a few different categories for sure.

We've got -

1. Hard Factual Data (Charts and Stuff)
2. Speculation based on some general knowledge of current events
3. Fearmongering and mindless speculation
4. Preparation for such an event were it to happen
5. General Yellowstone Chat - (Webcam)
6. Information Gathering (Help! What's going on?)
7. Educated commentary (Advice from a Volcanologist) Missing?

I made an effort to post links to the various topics that have sprung up from this, but there are too many.

I think all have their place somewhere in the vast ATS universe, but the conversation (no matter what it is) seems to drift back here.

Not sure where I was goin with that, but just an observation

I've found more good info than gloom and doom on this thread. I want to thank everyone who has put in alot of work toward our mutual education about earthquakes and volcanoes. I'm with the person who said let's look for some analysis of the data we have seen over the past week. I have really gotten interested in this subject, and credit all the people on this site for fueling my interest. Keep up the good work and thank you! I'm looking forward to continuing to monitor this.

Before people chalk that in the "weird animal behavior" category, I'll just note that the wild animals in national parks have been used to humans since birth. I was in Yosemite last year and deer wouldn't move at all when you walked within feet. My wife and I had two close encounters with black bears that just walk right towards you as if they're dogs. Wouldn't surprise me to see wolves and foxes walk within fifty feet of Winter crowds, on a normal day. They know people aren't sure-footed on snow.
