Graphic images of Americans being mutilated in Iraq could powerfully shake U.S. public support for the occupation and may play into the presidential campaign, pollsters and media analysts said on Thursday.

After initially hesitating, U.S. TV networks began showing the images of cheering Iraqis in Falluja celebrating the murders of four American security contractors whose bodies were burned, mutilated and strung up for public view.

Newspapers carried front-page pictures showing charred bodies surrounded by exulting mobs.

"These pictures speak volumes. It's just what the Bush administration did not want. Americans are seen here as real victims, not just statistics," said pollster John Zogby.

I don't know. It seems to me that the Bush administration may actually want these pictures to get out in order to incite a bloodlust for the death of 'terrorist' which would change the ideas of some to actually stay in the war.

Hmmm....

I wonder what would happen to public opinion if we burned a bunch of them and watched it on TV...

....and then we threw a big ol' bash to celebrate the burning of the Holy Ones. Complete with liquor, and scantily clad women pouring it all over their bodies for the wiley-eyed infidel men to lick. And then ritual sex acts in the street, and speaking in tongues, and the burning of things which smell of sin. All broadcast over hijacked middle eastern television and satellite transmissions, so they could see the evil that we really are - sick, perverted, monstrous, murderers of the Holy Chosen People of Allah!!!

And then we could have a tuna sandwich, watch Third Rock, and go to bed so we can get to our jobs on time.

It sickens me looking at that picture. I was never for this war in Iraq anyway, so this just pisses me off further.

Well, why don't we also air videos and pictures of families in Iraq who were killed by US troops and artillery, or in the bombings...whether on accident or on purpose. Innocent civilians shouldn't die, men who join the military make the decision...the other side has it far worse off, and we are invading THEIR land...pull out the troops and no more people die, it can only be the fault of the one sending them over there. Bush is sick enough to use these pictures to gain support for the election...even though he is the one sending them to war! It is a part of war that people die, and it goes both ways..it is sad when anyone dies, but it can be avoided by simply keeping our troops here. If anything this would hurt Bush.

Hatred is part of the problem here. You don't fight fire with fire, you fight it with water. This is exactly why we are in a 'war' we simply cannot win.

There will always be anger in the world, do you condemn it or do you propogate it?

If we were to do this I think it would make thier hatred for us grow even stronger.

Its a shame that it has to come to this to get people to change their opinion about the invasion/occupation, but it was an inevitability considering the volatile nature of the region. Had the U.S. not gone over there and blown up Iraq, there wouldn't be U.S. citizens there being killed and burned to show off to the media to fuel current public outrage.

The U.S. should have never gone over there and images like that are simply more reason not to continue to be there and waste lives on either side.

This is ridiculous. Shoktek, you talked about military men knowing what they're going to war for, but this is entirely different. Kill soldiers, fine. Shoot them, etc. Don't kill them, burn their bodies, drag them thru the streets, and rejoice at their charred corpses.

F*cking ridiculous. We need to get the f*ck out of there. I used to be in favor of the war, when it first started and we were apparently going to find WMD and root out terrorists I was all for it. But now, this has gone too far.

I agree with you Heel....

I hate that we're there. However since we are, I do support our troops.

Also since we are there, I believe in and "eye for an eye" ! We should be doing to them , exactly what they are doing to us.

It makes me very angry to see these pictures and very upset and angry everytime an American gets killed over there.

The administration has made strenuous efforts to keep the news from Iraq as upbeat as possible. It has banned TV crews from filming at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where the bodies of dead U.S. servicemen arrive back to the country. President Bush (news - web sites) has not attended any funerals of personnel killed in Iraq.

That's a quote from the article. Shows how much Bush cares about our dead soldiers, huh? Send them to die and then don't honor their memory by attending atleast a funeral or two. He's too busy running around trying to cover up for lies to respect the lives that have been given on account of said lies. Disgusts me...

I heard on AM radio this afternoon that those

"Private contractors" were actually "Secret Service" agents, disquised.......

These "so called private contractors" were there to gather information on something.....Not sure what it is, if anyone finds out. Post the link.....

The thing is that we won't just pull out. It has become a national ego thing now were the administration won't admit that they were wrong. So to save face more and more American soldiers and government associates will we sent to their possible deaths. It is a sick and sad mentality, but this is the world that we live in.

Aren't I just a ball of cheer!

I find it just as sickening to watch cnn and all the commentators so excited about the weaponry and tactics in the war. Rumsfeld was visibly excited about the shock and awe campaign.

And watching that jackass on fox showing pictures of an arab fleeing on a horse and saying 'the americans are coming, the americans are coming.'

This madness is attractive, until the day it happens to yourself- D. Byrne

...of course I don't condone any of what has happened, but it happens on our part as well..and yes, soldiers do know what they are getting into, and all the blame for deaths should lie on George W. Bush and his gang of criminals. Down with Bush, down with war.

The fighting fire with fire thing actually comes from the practice of fighting fire with fire. Right, a controlled burn to use up the fuel and contain a fire that is out of control. It works. Not every time, but most of the time. Sometimes it makes the fire even more uncontrollable, you know, like when an unexpected south wind kicks up and stokes the fire, causing it to SWALLOW SMOKE JUMPERS WHOLE!!!!

But what if we were that evil, and the fundamentalists were right in what we were doing? What if we were a country obsessed with sex to the point that we had drugs to keep our junk hard for hours? And what if we had actually convinced ourselves of our righteousness to the point that it was a national debate every time a boob flopped out on TV, causing divisiveness and angst amongst the people? And what if we were all hooked on drugs? What if the country were so depressed, dissatisfied, and malcontent that we had a prescription drug habit nationally about 40 times that of the rest of the world combined, but we weren't able to spare a few pills to the people of the rest of the world that would easily be cured of their ailments and not have to die at a young age? I wonder what would happen if we even remotely fit the description that the fundamentalists place on us. Maybe we would be able to see it for ourselves and possibly re-think the way we interact with our world. Maybe we wouldn't have a defense [sic] budget almost ten times that of our three most credible enemies combined at this point. Maybe we wouldn't engage in an election in which the outcome is largely determined by the size of a candidate's 'warchest' or the effectiveness of his 'attack ads', and contend for position in 'battleground' states in order to 'secure a foothold' on the White House. It really is all about the White House, isn't it?

Happy April Fools Day!
