The politics of division?

This coming about a candidate who seeks to implement redistribution of wealth through class envy?

The right wing has tried to get a good deal of play out of the "redistribution of wealth" and class warfare thing.

Would you label the excessive corporate tax cuts the GOP has implemeted in the past eight years as redistribution of wealth? Or would you ramble on about "trickle down" theorey? Because no one in the middle class has felt the rain from these tax cuts...the wealthy have gotten wealthier with these breaks and the poor have gotten poorer.

The mantra of the GOP has been ...let us give the wealthy more money (via tax breaks) and the middle class will see the benefits.

IT HAS NOT HAPPENED. Every economist worth a cent (even republican economists) have agreed that Trickle down has never worked and never will, but is rather a rhetorical ploy for wealthy and powerful lobbyists to become MORE wealthy and powerful while the middle class carries the bulk of the tax burden.

There HAS BEEN A REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH going on for a long time!
IN FAVOR OF THE WEALTHY!

Very Richest's Share of Income Grew Even Bigger, Data Show
By DAVID CAY JOHNSTON
Published: June 26, 2003
The 400 wealthiest taxpayers accounted for more than 1 percent of all the income in the United States in the year 2000, more than double their share just eight years earlier, according to new data from the Internal Revenue Service. But their tax burden plummeted over the period.

Report Says That the Rich Are Getting Richer Faster, Much Faster
www.nytimes.com...

BTW - When the Middle class fails the wealthy are not far behind and we are reaching a failure point for the middle class...serious economic depression.

Shifting the tax breaks to the Middle class is not "redistribution of wealth".
It is the fairest and wisest policy. It is a recalibration of a faulted tax system.

Next why don't you ramble on about how Obama is a socialist while Bush Nationilizes our banking system! The hypocrisy is mind numbing.

Will MSM Report on Obama Membership in Socialist New Party?
By P.J. Gladnick
October 8, 2008 - 16:15 ET

The mainstream media thought that the membership of Todd Palin, who is not a candidate for any office, in the Alaska Independence Party important enough to report in such outlets as the Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, and the New York Times, among others. So now that Barack Obama's membership in the far left New Party has been unearthed, will they report his membership in that Socialist organization?

Proof of Obama's membership in the New Party was discovered by the Politically Drunk On Power blog:

In June sources released information that during his campaign for the State Senate in Illinois, Barack Obama was endorsed by an organization known as the Chicago "New Party". The 'New Party' was a political party established by the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA) to push forth the socialist principles of the DSA by focusing on winnable elections at a local level and spreading the Socialist movement upwards. The admittedly Socialist Organization experienced a moderate rise in numbers between 1995 and 1999. By 1999, however, the Socialist 'New Party' was essentially defunct after losing a supreme court challenge that ruled the organizations "fusion" reform platform as unconstitutional.

After allegations surfaced in early summer over the 'New Party's' endorsement of Obama, the Obama campaign along with the remnants of the New Party and Democratic Socialists of America claimed that Obama was never a member of either organization. The DSA and 'New Party' then systematically attempted to cover up any ties between Obama and the Socialist Organizations. However, it now appears that Barack Obama was indeed a certified and acknowledged member of the DSA's New Party.

On Tuesday, I discovered a web page that had been scrubbed from the New Party's website. The web page which was published in October 1996, was an internet newsletter update on that years congressional races. Although the web page was deleted from the New Party's website, the non-profit Internet Archive Organization had archived the page.

From the October 1996 Update of the DSA 'New Party':
"New Party members are busy knocking on doors, hammering down lawn signs, and phoning voters to support NP candidates this fall. Here are some of our key races...

Illinois: Three NP-members won Democratic primaries last Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary)."

You can find the above quote from the scubbed New Party web page at this Internet Archive Organization link. More confirmation of Obama's membership in the New Party can be found at an article in the November 1996 Progressive Populist magazine:
New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago

the current republican party is only about furthering the aristocracy in this country.
They pander to the ignorant to keep themselves in power, but the bottom line is unless you make the top 99% of income you are being used as a pawn by the republicans.

Stalin had said it best when he said.

Ideas and knowledge are more dangerous than weapons. If we don't allow them to have weapons than we certainly won't allow them to have ideas and knowledge.

Sorta reminds me of the continuum of ignorance the current republican administration is seeking to perpetuate.

seriously Powell didn't endorse sharpton or jackson so what makes you think he's endorsing obama because he's black. thats sorta racist. He's endorsing obama because he wants somebody in power who is not 100% corrupted. He too wants america to wake up and become the role model for the rest of the world again. not some giant scam, which it currently is.

As for all the people ragging on powell for doing bushes bidding. he's a soldier and good soldiers follow orders. get mad at bush and co. if you want to point blame.

Now that he's got a choice as to who he would like to serve under he's taing the opportunity.

Well Mr. fat ass Limbaugh put his hands over his mouth today and said loudly that Powell's endorsement WAS ALL ABOUT RACE! I "knew" that was going to happen. The said part is that even after this endorsement (and dozens of others from GOP lately), the polls are tightening! Gaaaawwd, I am starting to look for another country (cause I am disliking this one more every day).

If Powell were going to endorse Obama because of his race, he could have done it LONG ago, because as far as I know, Obama has been black for quite some time now...

You are so sad. I have no problem disagreeing with people based on beliefs. But to say something so offensive about someone who was on your side for sol long, and now you want to call him out as a racist because he suddenly picks someone else, is abhorrent. I have been a lurker on here for many months. I myself am an independent but am extremely happy that McCain appears to be losing this race. Its people like you that make me very happy when the far right does not get their way. I hope you enjoy the next four years as much as I have the last eight. Cheers Slinky

What else about an Obama Presidency would be transformational??

Slick move. But not effective. The question is not what do we think or believe how Senator Barack Obama is transformational. The correct question is, why does General Colin Powell (Retired), Secretary of State 2001-2005, think and/or believe that Barack Obama is transformational?

Though the reason is clear to one that takes the time to listen to what Colin Powell said previous to announcing his endorsement of Barack Obama.

Powell thinks that Obama is transformational because:

He's crossing lines--ethnic lines, racial lines, generational lines. He's thinking about all villages have values, all towns have values, not just small towns have values.
www.msnbc.msn.com...

...because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America, because of who he is and his rhetorical abilities--and we have to take that into account--as well as his substance--he has both style and substance--he has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president.

He is a new generation coming into the world--onto the world stage, onto the American stage

Contrast that to what Powell voiced about about his disappointment with the McCain-Palin campaign, the GOP, and what a McCain-Palin presidency might mean for the future of America:

This Bill Ayers situation that's been going on for weeks became something of a central point of the campaign. But Mr. McCain says that he's a washed-out terrorist. Well, then, why do we keep talking about him? And why do we have these robocalls going on around the country trying to suggest that, because of this very, very limited relationship that Senator Obama has had with Mr. Ayers, somehow, Mr. Obama is tainted. What they're trying to connect him to is some kind of terrorist feelings. And I think that's inappropriate.
www.msnbc.msn.com...

I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say. And it is permitted to be said such things as, "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim." Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, "He's a Muslim and he might be associated terrorists." This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

And I look at these kinds of approaches to the campaign and they trouble me. And the party has moved even further to the right, and Governor Palin has indicated a further rightward shift. I would have difficulty with two more conservative appointments to the Supreme Court, but that's what we'd be looking at in a McCain administration.

Taking all of this in, one should be able to discern, at least in part, why Powell views Obama as a transformational figure. Powell acknowledges that Obama doesn't stand for polarization of the country along partisan, legislative, or religious values. That Obama is reaching out to all Americans in his campaign. (Something that is in stark contrast to Palin aspiring to visit the "Pro-American" parts of the America. And her comments about Obama not seeing America the way that she does and some Americans do.) That Obama indeed shows a steady hand, who is deliberate with educating himself in order to understand what Americans need and want, thereby avoiding the trap of changing directions day after day in the way that Senator John McCain has. Every generation brings about new ideas, and Powell referenced that in connection with Obama as well.

But one important reason why Powell thinks that Obama is transformational should be obvious. In addition to Obama transforming how many Americans view themselves and America, and how foreign nations would view America if Obama becomes president, Obama currently is transforming the Republican party.

With conservative media and prominent Republicans such as Christopher T. Buckley and Colin Powell endorsing Barack Obama, it's easy to see that that there is an internal dialog going on within conservative and Republican ranks that agrees, at least in significant part, that Obama is the best choice for president at this time in the nation's history. Powell articulates that the GOP has lost its way. Buckley articulates the same. So does the Washington Post and the Seattle Times. All seem to agree that a united country is best. Where freedom and equality are attainable without sacrificing one for the other.

If you want answers as to why Colin Powell thinks that Obama is transformational, listen to what he has said.

As for other conservatives and Republicans, who support many of Powell's views about Obama, listen to what they have said.

But if you really want to know why I think that Obama is transformational, it is because Obama inspires. Inspiration brings about change. As is evident from those who have chosen to support Obama. As is evident in the man himself who has, before America and the world, transformed himself into someone who would be President of the United States.

I'd like to add further to my earlier post after reading some of the other responses. Many of the people coming to defense of Powell right now and those who are attacking him.....how many of you would be flip flopping right now if he had endorsed McCain?

I'll guarantee we'd hear about his role in us going into Iraq and and that he's more of the Republican agenda and Bush policies. This coming from Democrats.

On the Republican side....we'd hear....see!! even Colin Powell has thrown his support behind McCain...he truly picked the man whom he thought was best fit to lead the country...and he looked beyond race to do so!!

Cut the crap people. It is what is. Does it really matter who he endorsed? He's a good man...but this won't change whom i vote for.

No that's what Democrats do, pander to people with absolutley no influence. Why on earth would the "aristocracy" "pander" to ignorance to keep them in power when the ignorant have nothing to do with "the power" .

but the bottom line is unless you make the top 99% of income you are being used as a pawn by the republicans.

You are talking about the top 1% I think are you not? If so, that makes a hell of a lot of people "pawns"

Powel didn't endorse Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton? When were they ever the Democratic nominee for President of the United States?

. thats sorta racist. He's endorsing obama because he wants somebody in power who is not 100% corrupted.

Is that what Powel told you? if so what makes you think Obama is 100% corruption free? Powel has a long history of not only working for corrupt individuals but lending his support publically.

Also, I want to know why you say it is racist when a person such as myself says he is voting for Obama to advance his Black Race is Racist. How do you mean that? Do you have a problem with Blacks voting their race? If not than why would you anyone else for any reason they choose to vote for them?

growing up in the San Francisco area in the 80's, racism was something only seen in history books. The horrible crimes perpetrated by my ancestors are a direct cause of the ignorant hateful racism in the black community today. When I say that millions, tens of millions of people will support Obama because he is black..you know it's true, but because I look like my slave owning ancestors, I am demonized. I know General Powell has many reasons to go against the republican party. First Bush used him to sell the Iraq war, then spent our tax money like he was on a coke bender in Vegas. Because General Powell has sold himself as a "republican and conservative" I have to put him in the "because he is black" category.

Reading Aptitude! It's not just for SAT's anymore!

Yes I did mean what I typed. Yes there are a lot of pawns. Yes there has become a psuedo aristocracy in this country. Yes they exploit the ignorant bottom 99% in various degrees. yes that ultimately makes them pawns, a lot of pawns.

Surprise people are beginning to figure this out and are electing someone who is aware of this too and wants to help america cure it's self of this affliction. The issue and phenomena runs very deep.

Powell is NOT voting for Obama because he's black. look deeper.

NEWSFLASH - this is still a free country. I am entitled to my opinion.
I posted some of the information that my opinion is based upon.
And yet you call for my death for daring to have an opinion that I formed by reading news articles and for having an opinion that isn't PC.

:shk: sick

Let's review the flames -

Benevolent Heritic basically accused me of calling blacks 'sneaky' when I gave my opinion that RICE wouldn't fess up to who she was voting for. I provided proof of her praising Obama while putting down Pailin - and proof that she said she'd keep her vote private. These are the things that I based my opinion on.

Yet no apology is given.

I endure anti-freedom-of-thought and anti-freedom-of-speech weenies calling me 'disgusting' and saying that they no longer have any respect for me (as if they had any to begin with? ) And of course there was the all hands call to get the torches and pitchforks and delete my post simply because my opinion, which I based upon news articles, DISAGREES with those of the majority here. :shk:

Far left facist liberals at work.
Only allowing 'tolerance' if it agrees with THEIR opinion.
You all seriously need to take a long hard look at yourselves.
It's a pretty ugly site.

First, I don't give rats rear end how old it is mayberry, the challenge to offer proof of Obama's Socialist views SUGGESTED in the first post on this page were granted moreover they ARE proven a FACT.

As for your *Block Buster* news Obama is registered as a democrat is like saying their are no Atheist Republicans or Socialist Democrats which happens to be what Obama is all about and like most of the seedy spurious activity we find out about this latest shyster of the chicago daley political machine , they couldn't quite keep this one under wraps.

OBAMA prefers our Government be one of Socialism from the many quotes he has borrowed for using in his speeches from Communist Author Saul Alinsky, to his subtle but transparent socialist agenda to "redistribute" the wealth.
