Here's an interesting quote:

"In this competition, the prizes are rail links, roads and pipelines. That is what Putin wants in Georgia. The Left, always on the lookout for a “war for oil” can’t see Georgia for what it is: Putin’s attempt to control the pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Turkey and thence to the European gas grid."

STEP ONE HUMANITARIAN AID

Bush sends American Military to Georgia for "humantarian" support

A joint civilian-military assessment team was flying into Georgia late Wednesday afternoon, local time, to gather information on exactly what is needed, the official said. A second flight, with some initial humanitarian supplies such as sleeping bags and water, was to arrive after that.

STEP TWO "MILITARY ADVISORS"

U.S. Military Instructors Command Hirelings in Georgia

Thousands of mercenaries are fighting for Georgia in this burning conflict with South Ossetia. They are commanded by the U.S. military instructors, RIA Novosti reported with reference to a high-ranked officer of Russia’s military intelligence.
“From 2,500 to 3,000 mercenaries fight against Russia’s peacekeepers on behalf of Georgia,” the unnamed source said. Amid them are the natives of Ukraine, some Baltic states and the Caucasus regions.

The U.S. military instructors directly command and coordinate actions of mercenaries without being involved in actual fighting, the source specified. According to intelligence data, there are roughly 1,000 military instructors of the United States in Georgia.

STEP THREE "TROOP TRAINING"

Troops from Atlanta will train in Republic of Georgia

A large contingent of Georgia Army National Guard soldiers flew to the Republic of Georgia on Sunday for joint military exercises at a time when tension is brewing in the region.

The soldiers, mostly from the metro area, will be part of "Immediate Response 2008," which will amount to the largest U.S. footprint on the crossroads of Asia and Europe since the Cold War began.

The three-week operation also provides practical training for the 48th Infantry Brigade's 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment just months before a pending deployment to Afghanistan

How soon everyone forgets. Not even a generation has passed. The old Russia is back and that means their unrivaled propaganda abilities are back.

Anyone notice that Russia invaded a sovereign nation with an elected Democratic Government or will that just slip by? Did you also notice that South Ossetia is inside Georgia and not inside Russia? Did you notice that Russia broke the cease fire and we have been watching many videos taken in areas where Russia said it did not go as they bomb these locations where they never went? How many live reports of the tanks rolling into areas Russia denied being minutes before will it take? Declaring citizens of Georgia to be Russian citizens just because they say so? Plllllllease!!!

Russia's methodology has always been to say one thing and do another. It has also been to divert attention with a lie out one side of their mouths while they orchestrate their atrocities out the other side of their mouth.

Does anyone really believe that while Putin was throwing a phony fit about our plans they were not neck deep in even more sinister plans of their own? Putin probably is building 2 missiles to our one and has been planning this invasion since before the phony elections. This stuff with Georgia trying to round up its dissidents was just a convenient coincidence that happened to pop up.

I think the US should just kick back and sit this one out and let the worlds whiners show their stuff as they deal with this. Will the world let Russia invade and occupy a Democracy without lifting a finger to help them? We have seen this before, have we not? Come on world, show us your stuff.

Yuppers... they were 'preparing' Perhaps this whole thing is 'war games' at a new level... I though it would be China we play with, not Russia though

Hmmm need to re-evaluate data and time to start restocking the bunker

Not so much America gave Saakashvili the greenlight to overrun Ossetia thinking he would have the full support of the US behind him, but NATO as well:

www.russiatoday.com...

Saakashvili himself has said:

"it's not about Georgia anymore. It's about America, its values."

"I ... thought that America stands up for those freedom-loving nations and supports them. That's what America is all about. That's why we look with hope at every American," the U.S.-educated president said.

www.reuters.com...

This guy really thought he had a chance of keeping an iron-fisted hold over South Ossetia. He thought NATO would send in everything but the Kitchen sink to ensure Russia didn't get involved.

Hence his open, unprovoked attack on Russia. He thought he had the world on his shoulders going in and that nothing was going to deter him from grabbing as much land as possible in the Caucasus.

Obviously America's friendship with you varies widely based on how much Oil you can provide to them and how well you fit into their grand Foreign Policy agenda. (Are you next door to a former enemy, do you want to be part of NATO, will you allow US troops stationed on your soil?)

They in the end they realised Georgia wasn't worth actually coming to blows with Russia, just yet.
The same way Russia realised it's not worth escalating this into a full invasion of Georgia for the same reason.

The two need each other more than they like to admit. Not as enemies, but as poster boys to justify their pre-eminent positions as global superpowers, huge military budgets and global influence.

They can profit far more from using each other, rather than fighting each other.
And profit is the name of the game when it comes to the military-industrial complex.

Russian or American, your going to make way more money if you can consistently keep your populace paranoid and the best way of ensuring that happens is to have an eternal enemy that will never go away.

Osama worked for the mean time but everyone is slowly coming to their senses and realising the "War on Terror" is a well-planned heist job and there really is little to fear.

So who can you turn to keep your people terrified so they'll give into your unconstitutional demands for power, your increased military spending, your wars, your words and your grave errors in judgement?

The same people who terrified your nation for 60 years before: Russia.

[edit on 13/8/08 by The Godfather of Conspira]
Both the US and Russia use the precived threat of both nations to fleece the citizens and to allow for the depopulation of the world to happen.

I am a little nuts. I'm on ATS.

I think we just miscommunicated a bit. I'm sure that the US was playing diplomatic games as does every other country on earth. I don't think what happened was the intended or expected in quite this way.

Source
OUTSIDE GORI, Georgia - A Russian military convoy defied a cease-fire agreement Wednesday and rolled through a strategically important city in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, which claimed fresh looting and bombing by the Russians and their allies.

This is what I was alluding too.

I don't think Bush intended this at all. People have become so used to blaming everything on the US that when another countries government does something as wrong as this is; they don't seem to be able to discuss it without the nonsense. This is not about the US. It is about a Democracy that has been invaded by Russia and Russia's continuing but expected lies.

After Russia said it was not bombing Gori yesterday, I watched a reporter with Gori in the background being bombed. One landed so close the reporter had to drive away to safety. Now today they claim they have pulled out and we see report after report they have not. This is not over by any means. Russia intends to occupy Georgia.

What if the U.S. projected a holographic image of Allah floating over Baghdad?

Allah on the Holodeck
Pentagon planners started to discuss digital morphing after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Covert operators kicked around the idea of creating a computer-faked videotape of Saddam Hussein crying or showing other such manly weaknesses, or in some sexually compromising situation. The nascent plan was for the tapes to be flooded into Iraq and the Arab world.

The tape war never proceeded, killed, participants say, by bureaucratic fights over jurisdiction, skepticism over the technology, and concerns raised by Arab coalition partners.

But the "strategic" PSYOPS scheming didn't die. What if the U.S. projected a holographic image of Allah floating over Baghdad urging the Iraqi people and Army to rise up against Saddam, a senior Air Force officer asked in 1990?

www.washingtonpost.com...

The Gulf War hologram story might be dismissed were it not the case that washingtonpost.com has learned that a super secret program was established in 1994 to pursue the very technology for PSYOPS application. The "Holographic Projector" is described in a classified Air Force document as a system to "project information power from space ... for special operations deception missions."

Listen, i see your point of view but Many here at ATS ,including me , have been following this conflict since day one,and have been mind-boggled at the amount of dis-info and propaganda from both Russia and Georgian sources, i know it is frustrating, but i cannot pretend that i know any better. The first casualty of war is the truth , and it is of my opinion that both Russia and Georgia are equally to blame,in war there are no innocents my friend , and quiet frankly We are passed who fired first ! In this case if you read up on it, both had a motive -Russia: to destabilize Georgia ,reducing it's chances of becoming a member of NATO and eliminating the "missile shield" threat right next door, and Georgia with there motive of removing it's territorial dispute with South Ossetia.( 90% Russian). Now that Russia's withdrawing, we Really now should be looking at who had more to lose or gain and it is quite obvious to me ,that we are all at a loss

Yes, this seems very likely. Why else would the Georgian president go attack Russia all of a sudden like a crazy man?

There is much more to this than what is getting public.

I understand where you are coming from. It is a real mess for sure.

Yes the US has some involvement, but then we should be backing new Democracies. Especially when they have the Bear at their backs ready to pounce.

Whatever semblance of a Democracy Russia briefly had, it is heading the other direction now. When the free press was eliminated, it pretty well spelled doom for a Free Russia. May as well rebuild the wall as Russian tanks start to roll.

Maybe its my generation showing. I still remember hiding under my desk at school or rushing to meet my parents at the bomb shelter. I remember plans for a fallout shelter lying on the coffee table. I remember the fear on my Fathers face as we watched the news of the Russian ships heading for Cuba. He had survived the Great Depression, Polio and TB epidemics and World War 2 and it took a lot to rattle his cage.

Both Russian and American oil companies who have invested into the Baku oil pipeline, are all playing a game here to divert any suspicion of Saakashvili to be sacrificed as soon as his juice is dry, because the pipelines will have to go via South Ossetia. Turkey & Israel are the other players in this oil scam

I think just from the simple fact that Russians are considering using strategic nukes that they are a tad bit tad bit wanting a cold war.
