Georgian, Russian war spreading - UN

www.news.com.au

FIGHTING in Georgia is escalating and widening beyond the breakaway region of South Ossetia into another Georgian separatist area, a top UN peacekeeping official said.

UN assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping Edmond Mulet said there have been "very substantial numbers of casualties, refugees and destruction" in Georgia.

US deputy ambassador Alejandro Wolff made it clear Washington blamed Russia for escalating the fighting.

How bad is this going to get?

Isn't it predictable to see the USA blaming Russia... well done for rattling the sabres.

Abkhazia is the other province that was sending forces and equipment into South Ossetia to help their fellow separatists fight.

When you take a step back and look at things, it looks as if at least 1/5th of Georgia is violently trying to separate from Georgia.

And Georgia is violently trying to stop them.

I expected fighting to leak into Abkhazia, this is about Georgia trying to crush anyone who wants to separate from the pro-NATO Georgia and join the Russians.

Hence, the Russians jumped in to defend them.

I think it's funny how the Georgian military leveled the city of Tshinvale, claiming over 1,000 civilian lives... and the US is condemning the Russians for the loss of just over 100 civilians. 1/10th of the civilian damage done by Georgia.

The world is full of hypocrisy ain't it?

Yours is a good description of the situation. So this is where the NATO-Russia confrontation has finally gotten a little Hot. Albeit through some proxies.

I was thinking earlier about the recent statements from Russia about the missile shield in Chezk and Poland. A military response I believe they said. Let's hope this doesn't escalate.

Eastern European nations who are not to fond of Russia are starting to send Georgia support, this could cause Eastern Europe to enter the war, which would drag the EU into the war.

Turkey is sending an "armada" to a Georgian port to protect the pipeline and it's citizens workers in the area. This puts the Turkish fleet within a stones throw of the Russian Fleet. Turkey is a NATO member, so NATO could be dragged in.

This what they mean when they say the war is spreading.

Edit: Uncomfirmed reports of Israeli "advisors" assisting the Georgian Army. Additional unconfirmed reports that U.S. "advisors" that were already in place are responsible for the shootdown of Russian aircraft.

The Russian fleet is en-route to blockade Georgia. The black sea is about to heat up.

I know this may be a silly question, but there is a war going on in Georgia right now...Has anything new happened since yesterday? I haven't heard any "Breaking News" stories about more destruction or a dangerous escalation in fighting.

What happens during these types of conflicts late at night or during off-hours? Do soldiers take a break and rest a few hours? Is there real fighting going on right at this very moment, Saturday 8/9/08 at 11:08 PM EST?

I would think that if there is any sort of lull in fighting, that would be a great time to try to use reason to stop the conflict.

There is no "official" rest period. Operations can and will happen day or night. There are indeed lulls, but not on any sort of schedule. It's all about securing objectives. Hesitation can be detrimental in most cases. A lull may happen when someone is deciding what to do next, but it's usually just to give off certain appearances and to "send messages." One side may back off for a bit, so the other side can examine what they've really gotten themselves into. More importantly in this sort of conflict, no one wants to look like the agressor in front of the world. So action must be provoked through more time-consuming and complex clandestine measures, and then responded to.

It's probably safe to say that there are at least skirmishes happening at this very moment.

I don't know if there is real fighting going on at this very moment, but based on what I have read there have periods of quite.

Georgia has asked for a cease fire, Russia hasn't answered. Thats what I heard last. I am more concerned with the ripple effect that has been created. WW2 was started in a smiliar fashion.

Russia has taken out a Georgian military airfield would that qualify as an answer?

news.yahoo.com...

TBILISI (Reuters) - Loud explosions rocked Georgia's capital early on Sunday, and a senior official said Russia had bombed a military airfield near Tbilisi's international airport.

"Three bombs were dropped on a military airfield belonging to Tbilaviastroi plant. There were no casualties," Shota Utiashvili, the head of the Georgian Interior Ministry's information department, told Reuters.

Can't believe it...The powers are in chaos. American intervention in the middle east has proven disastrous. Former Soviet satellites are mobilizing for war, as well as the Russian Federation. China is getting it's own taste of Islamic terrorism.

The E.U. is finding itself dragged into a conflict with Iran....Even more so than the US in many respects. The world wars that lead to World War are happening. I'm not afraid so much as disappointed. I'm not expecting doom and gloom. I'm expecting the death of freedom and the rise of the the Western powers to become far more fascist or communist depending on where they are...No difference really, it all leads to the same end. Same with the Eastern powers.

I guess you are right. It looks like Russia just took out a military airfield in Georgia.

I think Russia wants the whole Republic of Georgia now, not just South Ossetia.

I remember in the movie "The Day After" WWIII started like this. Small conflicts that quickly grow into the unthinkable. I don't think nuclear war is coming, but I think there will be enough conflicts going on at the same time to create a perfect storm for a serious war...A real world war.

To the media, if it's not an American war, it doesn't matter. Russian planned the attack to be during the Olympics for a reason...put those two together and you have no coverage.

What are you talking about? Georgia is the one that initiated the attack. They launched a surprise shelling on the capital, and indiscriminetly just started shelling civilian areas. Russia had no choice but to do the right thing IMO.

What the Georgian president did was a war crime any way you see it. If it is recognized as their territory, then they did exactly what Sadaam did, indiscriminetly attack a civilian area and kill hundreds if not thousands and counting.

I suppose you would just sit by and watch if someone starts beating down an innocent person in the street eh? Thats ok, it seems to be a common thing these days to sit by and watch innocent people get hurt or killed.

This Conflict, well now War, is 2 days old. Just wait, you will get your news.

I think that the US pushed Russia's hand. You know there is alot of 'talk' going around on just how they were able to shoot two planes down. There is also 'talk' on how the US soldiers, that are already there, shot them down. Hm

I do not blame Russia for kickin the door in. In fact if anything, it is a good lesson on how to do a job right. America sends Marines for security. Any devil dog will tell you, we come in kick ass and go home, thats what our training is for. Russia came in hard, commited, had a (kind) good reason, and laid down the law.

I thinks almost honorable, they kept their word.
Something America Has Never Done.
