My golf clubs and as many balls as can be stuffed into the pocket, the potential for longest drive would be too tempting

The golf clubs also double up as extremely effective close combat weaponry
just incase I meet someone with Chuck Norris !

If I had one item to take, it wouldn't be electronics, or music or anything.

I also think that taking one bag with multiple items in it, is against the point of the thread.

But, I have a great coffee table book of the known universe. It has full page Hubble photos with little else. Also, they are listed in the distance from the Earth out, so its like a road map.

I would take the book to see the differences in what we know and understand about the universe, and also to see the name differences, and have a reference point to something. If an alien calls a planet "jushea" and I don't know what that is, I could find the picture of it in the book.

This book doesn't have everything in it, but a good amount. If my dreams came true, the alien would ask where I wanted to go, I could turn to a page in the book and point... Zoom we'd be off. Now, that would be a trip of a lifetime.

To be brutally honest I would invest my money into the best, strongest, and durable laptop I could buy.
With strong graphics and processor along with a cd in the dvd drive(2 if I can fit it) and with the video recorder built in it along with microphone. Maybe, I could hide a bag full of usb external harddrives in my space diaper?

Next I would download everything I could on the internet I could find and enjoy:

Music(Grant it that I won't be fined a billion dollars in illegal downloading
)
Funny videos
Tv shows
Photos(friends, family, nature, home videos included)
The A...hem Videos (catch my drift?)
e Books
Tons of video games and video game emulators and roms
Tons of historical writings and history to study
Write to down as much info about my life as possible before I forget and everything I've learned in life.
Take screenshots of my favorite websites(possibly with valuable info.)

Since I do not believe any space programmers are stupid enough to send in space without any form of communication, especially without testing, I assume that I would try to stay in touch with my Internet service provider.

Choice number 1:

My laptop with an external hard drive of 1,5 terabytes ( so that I can put all my movies , music, pictures, game emulators of all consoles etc....).

And as someone stated before, taking off the battery is good aswell and I would replace the empty space with hops seeds and yeast so that I can brew my own beer. Ohhh and tobacco plant seed aswell

Know what, maybe I should take a wax model of Will Smith, Sighourney Weaver, or Arnold Scwarzeneggar just in case they are not friendly they will think I'm friends with the alien killers in their alien texts.

88-key digital sampler (keyboard, and assuming there would be an amp or at least headphones with it) If I'm going with the same bunch as the previous posters, there would be plenty of computers I could borrow when necessary.

The thing is given that these aliens have the tech to get here, how big is the overhead storage?

Given that they would prob have a cargo hold, I'd take either a Supermarine Spitfire or a F-14 Tomcat.

If its not possible to take those and overhead is small, I'd take all the episodes of Thunderbirds.

Well, The OP already made the best point.

My laptop.

it's good for taking pictures/video
Recording thoughts,
Playing music/movies

after only reading the thread title, that is what i thought of.

Although, I would also wonder: "Do we get to bring anything BACK with us, from said planet"

the thing is this;

are we returning from the planet?

Great thread!! My first choice would be as quite a few others have mentioned, my laptop. It does have everything you need on that. I am a writer and i would record my thoughts and observations as they happen.

However if was not able to take my laptop i'd take the leader of the UN or another world politican. Such a life changing experience would make them see life in a completely new way and on comming back to Earth he/she could share that with the rest of the world and maybe some good will come out of it.

Makes me wonder why ET have not yet beamed up Putin And Bush and had a few words, whisked them off to their planet and shown them there is a better way of doing things.

I'd take my fishing rod. If there aint any fish then cancel Dragon33's seat reservation! If there are fish then bother coming back for me!

I love this thread! It's great to see where everyone's priorities are
. I would definitely take my dog. She may end up being my only companion....and she probably wouldn't be alive when I got back
. But...all the vodka and laptops ideas are good too

I'd take my iPod full of the likes of Pink Floyd, Staind, The Police, Nivana, Goo Goo Dolls, Mark Ronson, David Bowie, Genesis, The Eagles, Deep Purple and all the Tarantino films for their pleasure

I would take a good sharp knife. Weapon, tool, toothpick all in one. I would not travel to any other country, let alone a different planet without one. It is the basic root tool of mankind and a definate necessity for a trip of this magnitude. Or I might just take a Slinky and pray for stairs.

My first thought was tissues - I'm bound to come down with something, but I think they would count as a necessitiy along with clothes.

So my 'luxury item' would be a comic book - Fat Freddie's Cat.
