Good post Hellmutt. You beat me to it

What do you think of the possibility that this conflict may have been started with the intention of also cutting off Russia's Overland connection to it's Ally in Iran?

Along with all the other reason's for this conflict, I can't help but think that this thing was also started to sever this connection and act as a distraction (of sorts) for the possible attack on Iran. I noticed that all news of the massive Armada heading towards the Gulf took a backseat to this latest Conflict.

Does anyone have a link to the text of the peace agreement?

I heard on Euronews that one condition is that Russia can take “additional security measures”, without specifying what those measures are.

Can anyone confirm this?

I couldn't help wondering as I read through these posts if people realize that all major wars are designed? Even if Georgia's leader did do something on his own, it will not continue (or discontinue) until the power that be say so - The leaders of these countries are only talking puppet heads, they do not control or make the big decisions, the shadow government, which I'm sure you're all familiar with, make the decisions. So electing anyone anywhere is not going to help because if they don't play the game "their" way, they don't play AT ALL. No one honest ever succeeds - they get taken out somehow - remember the Kennedy's?

It concerns me when you're on a site like the ATS and still talking as if the 'leaders' are the ones leading. If they make an independent move that is contrary, they're taken out, period. There is a global government and no such thing as independent countries except on a map - Just my 2 cents

I saw on Portuguese TV (it was the first time I saw anything about this war on Portuguese news, I don't usually see Portuguese TV) a journalist that is in Georgia say that she was on Gori and that when they were leaving there was a large group of Russian vehicles (tanks, trucks and APCs) entering Gori coming from the direction of Tbilisi.

She said that the Russian checkpoint searched the car, asked for their documents and let them pass, and for the first kilometres on the road to Tbilisi they still saw Russian troops.

In the last 40 kilometres there were no Russian troops and the checkpoints were all from the Georgian police, there was not a Georgian military in sight.

In these checkpoints they only asked who they were and let them pass, they not even asked for their passports.

I was just watching the news and a reporter in Poti said the Russians are putting yet more troops into that area - probably so they can draw back from other areas and claim that they're actually reducing troop numbers (when in reality they're doing no such thing).

Always one step ahead, eh.

AFP: Angela Merkel says Georgia will become NATO member.

There does appear to be no pullout at all

Russian Defense Ministry Troops NOT pulling out of Gori

Now they state tomorrow as some posters have mentioned,

However as the above story shows, what they are "saying" and what is actually happening is a different thing entirely.

Why should they withdraw?

as in who is going to make them?

The never got out of the rest of Europe until they had too, I really don't see them ever going back to pre invasion lines.... and the response by the US to this will probably define the next 50 years in world history, and many of our lives.

Kind Regards,

Elf.

There have been some interesting developments, though.

- Saakashvili still in power (backed by the U.S.)

- Europe still adamant that Georgia will join NATO

- Polish-U.S. missile shield agreement

- Proposed Ukrainian-Western missile system

Hm.

So, bearing all of that in mind, what will Russia's next move be?

It just getting worse by the day.

Georgia in NATO? Ukraine missile shield deal. Poland missile shield. Russia putting nuclear weapons near Syria.

What next? Ukraine and Belarus having missile shields and NATO memberships? Russia moving nuclear weapons in Cuba? Russia cutting gas this winter which increase tensions? An attack on Iran?

So, it seems Russia wont take Tbilissi, what move do you expect from Russia now? Personnaly, i think they will honor their word this time and pull the troops from Georgia but will stay in the separatists regions.

I think this is the most obvious reason for the conflict, but the one least talked about. The oil angle is a red herring IMO, as the pipeline that Russia supposedly tried to bomb is in fact half owned by Russian interests. The timing of 'Operation Brimstone', and the subsequent armada headed to the Persian Gulf, and the occurrence of this conflict is just too much to be coincidence. We can only hope that Russia's aggressive response has put the BushCo crazies off this insane plan.

If USA/Israel go ahead with an attack on Iran now, it could very well be WWIII.

Russia says Georgia was planning a "major provocative act" in the town of Gori.

Russia's defence ministry has said that Georgia was planning a "major provocative act" in the Georgian town of Gori, Russia's RIA news agency has reported.

It followed Moscow saying its forces will begin withdrawing from its neighbour's territory at midday tomorrow.

I am especially worried now that Russia has adopted NATO's doctrine of pre-emptive nuclear strike.

I cannot belive Georgia, Ukraine and Poland may join NATO under these circumstances. This is brinksmanship.

The one term I have yet to hear from any country's mainstream media - that term beingMUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION

Georgia was, or is planning a provocative act? Huge difference between these two. And ensuring your own downfall is just foolish.
