There is no way our military is going to be able to just walk through a battle Field with its arms spread and not get shot at. This is a set up in my opinion.

That occured to me as well. Unless of course he meant by naval, that we will transport goods and supplies by sea to countries like Turkey, and then transport them by air or ground. That's possible I suppose. I will worry now though until I see that we aren't trying to go in via the Black Sea.

RIA NOVOSTI (RIAN) Moscow

Russian peacekeepers reported that the advance towards city of Gori was in order to evacuate military supplies, ammunition and weapons located at a large georgian military depot in Gori suburbs. The weapon systems present were all loaded and ready to use and left w/o any guard.

What an utter utter waste of money for the poor Georgia taxpayers.

Russia is putting aside €350m for the reconstruction of Ossetia. One sincerely hopes that the USA delivers actual humanitarian aid to the Georgians rather than new weapons to prop up the failed Saakashvili regime.

I would say it would be done through the Black Sea. That way the US have a precense there, something they won't have if they shipped it though Turkey.

An interesting statement from Bush there. Saakashvili is probably going to dig his heels in further now. Expect lots of wild comments about toilet seats and global domination.

Business, my dear comrades, has just picked up.

That was my thought, too.

This is both terrifying and exciting to watch unfold.

.....sacks of grain?

....maybe to give some perspective, could you imagine if Russia decided that they wanted to send their military in the Gulf of Mexico and land in New Orleans to deliever "humanitarian" aid. (rebuild after Katrina)

....If we really wanted peace, or wanted to help, or even wanted to present the facade of peace.....we would "ask" a bunch of neutral Countries to "deliever" the "humanitarian" aid.....

Bush didn't even try and say "peacekeepers" he just said "military" and said it will be "on going" we are going in.

(Edit.....or how about the Russian Military sending and conducting on going "humanitarian" aid to Cuba after some tropical storm....oh, I'm sure we would be all cool about that.))))

You are exactly correct once again. You keep beating me to the punch so since we are thinking along the same lines please feel free to continue to share my opinion

Or they can just land in Tblisi like they've been doing for the last 5 years

i agree. that coke headed idiot is plunging us into WW3. The EU was working on smoothing things over and now bush is jamming his hand in the cookie jar. I think they are afraid the georgian citizens will revolt and throw out the puppet after the loss. this is horrible news. if our military winds up over there that is like throwing gasoline on a brushfire. next stop WW3.

what an epic crazy a--hole bush is.

I think its obvious that he's trying to walk a fine line here. On one hand, he's attempting to back the Georgian government and protect them from the Russians, but on the other, he does not want to start WW3 over it.

This action would seemingly succeed in that goal. It sends a strong message to Russia to back off, but also does not immediately commit US forces into combat and gives the US the diplomatic cover. The Russians really can't complain about 'humanitarian aid' during a cease-fire, afterall, although its obvious what's going on here.

I'm not saying I like the idea, mind you, but it makes sense from a 'supporting your allies' standpoint. It puts the ball squarely in Russia's court and will likely (hopefully) force them to back down.

....ok,

some of you are concerned about the U.S. surrounding Iran??? Iran!??

How does the Iran conflict or potential even compare to the U.S. and Russia about to have some "diplomatic" exchange.

Iran should be an after thought at this moment in time.

Russia's defence ministry said the chief of staff has started planning the withdrawal of troops from Georgia to agreed pre-conflict positions.

In addition the ministry was offering a prisoner exchange with Georgia for prisoners in a dead body swap.

Not if it involves the US military moving in, in any shape or form! It's one thing for the Red Cross to do that, and quite another for US Airforce and Navy...

For those who didn't catch it:

Bush says US expects Russians to leave Georgia

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Wednesday he is skeptical that Moscow is honoring a cease-fire in neighboring Georgia, demanding that Russia end all military activities in the former Soviet republic and withdraw all its forces.

"The United States stands with the democratically elected government of Georgia and insists that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia be respected," Bush said sternly during brief remarks in the White House Rose Garden.

"To demonstrate our solidarity with the Georgian people," the president announced that he was sending Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Paris to assist the West's diplomatic efforts on the crisis, and then to the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

He also announced that a massive U.S. humanitarian effort was already in progress, and would involve U.S. aircraft as well as naval forces. A U.S. C-17 military cargo plane loaded with supplies is already on the way, and Bush said that Russia must ensure that "all lines of communication and transport, including seaports, roads and airports," remain open to let deliveries and civilians through.

"To begin to repair the damage to its relations with the United States, Europe and other nations and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must keep its word and act to end this crisis," Bush said.
