I was checking out matth's thread matth's thread Amazing new mars photos when the One Eyed prophet posted a link to this picture:

here is a close up:

what do we have here?

If you find it interesting then please flag it so we can get to the bottom of it.

I have seen fungi and lichen that appear similar. there is another "annomaly" in the picture if you look closely.

Again here is the original:

interesting showed this to my son and husband and they both gave the same answer a male reproductive organ ( the polite version of what they said!)

Now that is just bizarre. Bilateral symmetry. Out of place. We need a single thread just of anomalous mars images. I especially liked the 'boulder' climbing out of a canyon a few days ago.

It looks like a paw.
There's also a straight flat thingie sticking out of the bottom right of the image.

I missed that one. Do you have a link. Oh and don't overlook the sliver justting out from the rock.

Not talking sandmaries here.

Didn't they use air bags when the lander landed?
Thats what it looks like to me. Part of the air bag that became dislodged.
How it ended up behind the rock is another issue.

It was taken by the Spirit rover in 2007. SOL 1064
marsrovers.nasa.gov...

Sol 1064: Spirit monitored atmospheric dust and surveyed the sky and ground with the miniature thermal emission spectrometer.

and from this page:
www.jpl.nasa.gov...

Next up for Spirit will be an attempt to approach and conduct scientific analysis of a layered rock exposure known as "Montalva," part of a larger outcrop known as "Troll."

It looks like a bad attempt at using the stamp tool in photoshop to cover something up. The colors are the same as the surrounding rocks...
I wont put much stock in NASA photos that have been posted on their site, because they have already went over them with a fine tooth comb. They are not perfect either and i bet we can find a slip up.

im surprised this didnt come out sooner. as soon as I saw those pictures posted.. I knew we would get this crap... looks like a pretrified pecker... and of course just in front of it on the ground .. you can clearly see a large stone which seems to have some type of symbols on it.. theres all kinds of stuff in those pics.. if you let your imagination work a bit.

I'm sure the explanation will turn out to be geological. I suspect water or glaciers perhaps once eroded the landscape smoothing out the rocks. If you look around you can see some smooth rocks up on the hill and maybe on the top of the rough rock in the foreground. Perhaps the round "rock" rolled there or was covered by a material that prevented it from eroding like the rest of the rock. I suggested the rocks in the foreground were lava rocks but I suppose they could be rocks eroded due to acid rain or freeze thaw physical processes.

animal paw or plant? Reminds me a little of the kangaroo paw plant.

maybe "living rock" cactus?

I haven't been giddy in awhile.

Does anyone know what Sol these were taken on? I'd like to see what it looks like in stereo and if there are any other images taken of that area.

Also of interest is the sliver of something sticking out of the bottom of the rock in the foreground. It's prolly just a rock.

SOL 1064 is the answer you are looking for. January 2007 I believe.

Found object again on day 1087. Looks like a smooth rock:
marsrovers.nasa.gov...
I made a stereoimage using the same filter from day 1087 and adjusted curves to make the brightness of the two more similar. Here it is, presented in cross-eye format:

Thats strange. It looks kinda like the back end of a spider or some other bug of some sort. Be sweet if it was but i kinda doubt it. Still, Its cool all the same. Nice spot. I agree we need a thread for just strange mars pics
