Last night was a bit weird, now that I've had a good nights sleep I'll try and describe the weather a bit better than I did last night.

It was raining very heavy and my dog became spooked about 12:30AM, the rain continued most of the night but I didnt see any thunder and lightning till about 3AM, there was alot of rumbling in the sky then one flash which lasted about half a second followed by 3 very loud deep booms (this happened twice during the night), explosions was the first thing that crossed my mind but then I thought nahh its thunder, the rumbling went on for most of the night but it remained pretty quiet after about 4-5.

I dont know anything about thunderstorms so dont know what to make of it, to me it just sounded like a bad storm, but I'm certain I've never seen that style of thunder and lightning before.

I absolutely agree.
This thunder, was like, went very quiet then loads of very bright flashes each mintue then a massive big BOOM and i mean massive like as if there was a massive nuclar bomb going on it was very strange really werid.

The lightening was like, blue with white, you cundt see outside because the lightening was to light.
Even now my eyes hurt a bit.

Could well have been mate, i mean that could explain the big whurring noise i heard in a dazed state lol. I mean i dont think its anything UFOish about it, just curious about it lol.

On saturday one of the big EWAC(sp?) the big planes with the radar on top? One of those flew right over my house accompanied by 4 fighter planes, now at the time i thought they were there for the Air Show down in Sunderland because obviously they land at Newcastle, but then i found out ALL the flyovers of any type were cancelled because of the thick Fog, so not quite sure why they were there either.

its heat lightning... atmospheric temperature changes usually cause static and thus lightning... and since you already said there was fog which is also caused by a drop in temperature... then i would have no reason to believe it is anything other than simply atmospheric heat lightning

Why change the title of the thread to north east, UK? If you were posting a comment about something happening in the north east of the US would you bother to add the "US" ?
I hate the way everything on here is automatically expected to have happened in America.
As for the strange mist and light displays... I've seen similar strange effects out over the River Mersey towards New Brighton about two years ago. At the time I thought they were caused by lightning but thinking back over it, I'm not so sure.

because americans are very patriotic. To those of the Americans, we mean North East England. The experiance that has happend is virtually none existence in the uk at that type verossity.
It might be common in american but its certainly not in the uk

in the liverpool area then not heard of new brighton but obviously know merseryside. I might of heard it years ago but i dont remember anything like it, it just seemed to much of a normal storm. It was not a normal thunder storm it was building up to somthing. I was expecting one last massive bang but it dint come it went quiet after that.

i was so worried that i thought that i was expecting a massive flood from the sea thats how botherd we were about this storm

Patriotic or not, I think we should accept that there's people from all over the world on ATS and therefore posters should give precise details of where they're talking about and not just jump to the conclusion that we're talking about the good old USA.

true. Lets get back on topic though and listen to those who have experiance this so that those in america can tells us there experiance so we can understand. America and other countries like that have alot of storms like that but in the uk we dont but it is getting worse in the uk for it so why?

I dont think it was heat lightning from the description on wikipedia...

"Heat lightning is a misnomer for the faint flashes of lightning on the horizon or other clouds from distant thunderstorms that do not have accompanying sounds of thunder"

This was right over head and there was lightning followed a few seconds later by loud thunder, and I mean it was loud! It set all the car and house alarms off numerous times.

There was fog a few days ago but it wasn't anything special, might of been near the sea front but I live a few miles inland so it wasn't very thick.

Didn't see that plane either although I have seen that kind a few times circling the area (not for a few months now though).

Last night was something new to me, must be that pesky global warming.

Yeah I agree it is changing wether or not people agree with global warming, I've noticed its alot more stormy up this end and we dont have proper winters anymore, before summer we have a cool rainy spell and after summer a warm one, the autumn seems to come later as does the winter.

I'm not sure what the cause is all I know is something is happening...6 years ago I'd be delivering milk at 4 in the morning in a total blizzard and now where lucky to get 2 days of snow.

total agree with you. things are more drastic than they use to be, i am in redcar next to middlesborough. I was going to go out to look at the sea because i thought we would be flooded but i wonder whats going to happen in the winter, remember sheffield city centre totally flooded! i lived in barnsley wen that happend and that was a big un

Is it just me or does everytime something happen to someone , Solo1 from Canada always chimes in, stating he has had or seen the same experience. There isnt a thread that goes by that you dont jump right in saying you have seen or heard or experienced the same thing. I would have to say with everything you have experienced you must be a alien, otherworldy, blackops, men in black magnet..

It is worth bearing in mind for those on the east coast that the land mass is gradually tipping up. With the the west coast moving up and the east slowly sinking into the sea. It doesn't help that most of that coast line is made of clay either. As events last year demonstrate with the effect of the floods in Filey, and the great chunks falling off in Scarborough, the East coastline is undergoing a rapid transformation. For the foreseeable future things can only get worse.
