I've had the same thing happen here in the south. I've noticed there was alot of fog and strange flashes without any sound, but there were no noticeable thunder clouds at all :S

Yup, we call that 'heat lightning' down here in Tejas. It's rare, but well known. Ususally associated with 'bolts from the blue', where the lightning is occuring far out on the fringes of a storm.

It is called summer lightning or heat lightening. I have seen it many times - it is different from normal ones as there is no sound with it. When I was a kid living with my grandparent in summer months in country house I saw them very often.

Nothing to worry about, dude

I live in Whitley Bay, right near the coast not far from Newcastle. I woke up at if i remember my alarm clock it was something like 02:54am, the weather was crazy, the rain was lashing down like i've never seen before, there was lightning then the thunder which nearly deafened me, but i remember seeing 2 Helicopters flying round because i saw the two spotlights, and i could also hear a massive whirring noise somewhere above my house, i dont think this was another chopper, it sounded huge, but in my dazed 2am state i couldnt see anything and went to bed.

Last night i also experienced strange wheather patterns, lightning flashes, thousends of them.Strange thing is that the thunder patterns came afterwards, not just one by one ,but it kept on rolling like a long stretched sound.Around two at night i heard bangs, thought it was fireworks, but the intervals were different ,every two seconds bang! like canon shots. It repeated itself three times. There were no celebrations or feasts! My location is Belgium/Europe near Antwerp.Im 45 and i do know the difference between thunder, fireworks, gun or any other shots. My last minute thought is that it seemed like these shots triggered the wheather patterns! Ideas anybody???

Well i'm a Jarra lad to those of you that live anywhere near it lol. Not too far from the coast... I was looking out the window last night just watching the rain and actually turned to my girlfriend and mentioned that I was surprised theres no thunder and lightning. As the weathers been quite warm lately. But didnt see any flashes...

Quite a few Geordies on here lol.

To be honest where i was in Whitley Bay, there was lightning AND thunder, so to me thats not the mystery, but more why there was 2 choppers flying round, and some big whirring noise above the cloud that i couldn't see?

Last night was a bit weird, now that I've had a good nights sleep I'll try and describe the weather a bit better than I did last night.

It was raining very heavy and my dog became spooked about 12:30AM, the rain continued most of the night but I didnt see any thunder and lightning till about 3AM, there was alot of rumbling in the sky then one flash which lasted about half a second followed by 3 very loud deep booms (this happened twice during the night), explosions was the first thing that crossed my mind but then I thought nahh its thunder, the rumbling went on for most of the night but it remained pretty quiet after about 4-5.

I dont know anything about thunderstorms so dont know what to make of it, to me it just sounded like a bad storm, but I'm certain I've never seen that style of thunder and lightning before.

Please don't become paranoid. You can see flashes of lightning in the clouds with no thunder.

Know what? Now that you all are mentioning it. I remember reading stories of large ufos disguises themselves as large storm clouds or cirrus cloud. Most of the time, the cloud shape, supposedly, is abnormal. Along with the ability to use rain as part of the illusion.

Did the storm seem very natural besides no thunder?

There was thunder, it was a low rumbling for most of the night but only a few times was it accompanied by lightning.

I couldn't say wether or not it seemed natural, I'll admit it was a bit strange, I wouldn't say it was UFO's or anything though the weather forecast said we would get thunder (one of the few times they've actually been right!).

The storm seemed natural just probaby the worst i've ever seen here, but what stood out for me was the two choppers flying round in the mad conditions and whatever was whurring above my house, i couldn't see anything but i was half dazed at the time at 3am lol so to be honest god knows what it was.

Hey I live about 15 mins from Whitley Bay, what kind of choppers were they did you get a good look?

I never saw or heard them but choppers frequently fly over my area, I thought when the weathers bad they become grounded for safety reasons

If i'm honest mate i didn't get a look at them, just saw the spotlights through the fog. But it stood out for me that 1. if it was a criminal they were following, they only ever send ONE out not two and 2. The weather was so bad i'm suprised they were allowed out.

Theres often the odd police chopper flying round at night, but with the weather been terrible last night it suprised me.

Yeah I've only ever seen 1 chopper out at a time, if it was 2 thats definetley unusual, maybe it was a chopper and a UAV, I saw one of them buzzing about a while back it sounds like a petrol lawnmower. Do you think it could of been one of them + a chopper?

If it was 2 choppers though I agree that is very ususual.

I presently live in a seaside town, in the North East of England (UK).

Right now it is raining in my town, as it has been for the last two hours or so.

In the last ten minutes a VERY thick fog has rolled in.

The town is very quiet, more so than I would normally expect for this time of night. Often seagulls can be heard.

Ocassionally a car passes my house, but that is once every ten to fifteen minutes.

The odd events are the flashes in the sky. These are bright white flashes, like lightning, but no sound accompanies them.

I can hear very clearly the sounds from outside, as I have the windows open. There is the occasional car, as mentioned, and the droplets of rain bouncing off everything they hit. There is no wind, so even the trees are still.

Are there any others on here tonight that have seen, or know what these flashes might be?

I have looked out of the window for anything that might be in the sky, such as a helicopter with a search light, but can see nothing (because of the fog), and can hear nothing either.

It certainly is very odd, and most distubring sitting here in the dark and seeing these flashes without the usual rumble of thunder. This certainly has my curiosity on a high!

I realise that you, the reader, only have my word for these events, but I have no equipment with which to take any film... so I may only relay what I see in words.

I can vouch for this. I live in north east as well on a seaside and this thundering was more than your normal it was horrific sound that was shattering windows and the lightening was at least every minute
